The Fourth of July passed quietly in Goshen with few accidents of no serious character. Most residents travelled out of town, many getting wet from showers in northern Indiana and southern Michigan. The Elks ball game was the sole local attraction and injuries were limited to three men including Archie Gilbert who sustained facial and eye burns from a premature explosion.
Goshen Elks defeated the South Bend Elks 4 to 0 in seven innings before a 400 plus crowd at Ariel grounds yesterday. Goldstein hit a home run in the sixth, Witt and teammates held the visitors scoreless, as Goshen’s Benders were shut out. Local lodge plans a summer schedule amid challenges from northern state lodges.
The Goshen area is set to welcome a major circus this summer as Ringling Bros. is expected to perform in August. Local officials confirm plans are proceeding with a large-scale show.
The Western Writers' Convention scheduled to begin Monday at Winona Lake has been postponed on July 16. The event's new dates were not announced.
Isaac M. Carpenter is ill at his home on Clinton street. Mrs. John Bigler is reported to be improving.
A 13 year old boy in South Bend died from tetanus after self inflicted hand infection. The death prompted officials to warn about proper wound care and vaccination against tetanus.
Fred Kabelin aged 30 drowned in Pine Lake near LaPorte. Authorities investigated the incident as a lake accident and notified next of kin. The death is under local inquiry.

An eastbound Lake Shore freight about a mile east of Dunlaps broke in two yesterday at 3:55 PM. Three cars derailed, one car blocking the westbound track, delaying traffic for hours. The Twentieth Century Limited diverted to the old line between Elkhart and Toledo, while No 16 due at 4:56 was canceled on that division.
Elkhart youth Earl Riblet, 20, was shot in the eye during a Fourth of July incident. Glen Kyte, 20, fired a .22 caliber revolver using a blank cartridge, injuring Riblet.
Charles G. Towle, a longtime Mishawaka figure and St. Joseph county official, was struck Sunday by paralysis. His right side is affected and his condition is serious though doctors expect recovery from the shock.
Monday evening about 8 30 a police call was sent in from the residence of Charles Garvin on Washington Street when it was thought someone was in the home of W D Rough who resides next door in the W J Davis property. On investigation no trace of anyone could be found. Mr and Mrs Rough are at present out of the city.
Leo Shinger and Charles Bishop both about 13 years old, sons of Henry Shingler and George Bishop, prominent landowners near Urbana, were stopped at Wabash as they drove in Shingler's double rig en route to fight Indians.
In room 58 at the Grand Central hotel St Louis the body of Dr William A Blake a dentist from Fort Wayne Ind was found on a bed beside a bottle that had contained carbolic acid. He was despondent and had registered at the hotel.
The young son of Samue Detwiler of West Goshen accidentally shot himself through the second toe of the right foot with a flobert rifle while playing Sunday morning. No serious injuries expected.
Mrs. J. Carter was thrown from her buggy when a horse balked on the Nickel Plate road at Hammond, injuring her and smashing the buggy.
Harry Stone, a noted Noble county politician, has recovered sufficiently from a serious illness and doctors have decided against performing an operation.

Roy Gibson a lineman for the Fort Wayne and Wabash Valley Traction lines was killed almost instantly in a collision near Belden a small station three miles west of Andrews in Wabash county Gibson boarded at Huntington he was unmarried but his mother lives at his former home in Ohio.

Joseph James aged 37 from Chicago was arrested in Valparaiso after a thrilling pursuit for an alleged attempt to assault the five year old daughter of William Fox. Police credits prompt officers with preventing harm.

Miss Lillian Misner daughter of the late Win Misner of Goshen and E D Kline a Baker City Oregon banker were united in marriage June 26 in their west home. They left for a pleasure trip to the western sea shore and will be home by the sixteenth of the next month. The bride grew up in Columbia City and many friends extend congratulations.
A Big Four excursion runs Sunday from Goshen at 7 30 a m to Benton Harbor arriving 9 15. Return leaves Benton Harbor at 7 p m. Spend the day at Old St Joe. Fare for round trip is 75 cents.
Fishermen dragging a net off Michigan City entangled with the body of Edward Leusch a prominent resident who had fallen from a pleasure launch weeks earlier. The body was carried about ten miles by an underwater current.
The Rev Daniel Markley a longtime Methodist preacher in the North Indiana Conference and Fort Wayne businessman died at age 85. He was active in church and local business for many years.
