Races at Fair Grounds mark a three day Independence Day style celebration in Goshen with five events on the program. A storm cooled the heat as visitors arrived for parades, bands, a public wedding, moving pictures, and a grand fireworks display.
Eugene Longstreet, a Warsaw pharmacist, was compounding a lotion in the basement of his store when poisonous fumes filled the room. Lead fumes from an ingredient nearly overwhelmed him, forcing a close call for the local chemist.
The Winona Lake hotel changed hands and is now managed by Andrew Bowles, formerly proprietor of the Grand hotel at Plymouth. He plans many improvements to the building.
The list names Supt. L. M. Culp as superintendent and J. P. Lantz as principal with assistants Grover Engle and J. H. Fike. Elna Seybert leads the intermediate, Mertie Griner the second primary, and Meda Martin the first primary as part of the Middlebury schools' engaged teachers.
The Co S B and N L Co finishes improvements on the Taporte Michigan City line built by J J Burns. Curves are removed the route shortened and the roadbed improved.
Mrs. Pearsillys condition improves after a serious illness at her home on North Ninth Street. The report notes the patient is gaining strength and state of health is improving.
Albert F. Jones of New Paris has been granted a patent on a metallic railway car. The allowance confirms Jones as inventor and marks a milestone in railcar construction with a durable metal design.
The Daily Democrat will skip publication Monday so office staff may observe Independence Day. Due to the local celebration, the paper went to press earlier than usual.

Judge Paulus af Marion ruled that the local option law took effect on November 20, 1908, meaning saloon keepers who licensed after September 26 and before November 20 could not be charged. After 90 days from the county option election expired May 24, they stayed open and were acquitted, bringing relief to Grant County saloon men.
Kosciusko county's oldest resident Mrs. Elizabeth Crowl died at 99 at her son Eli Crowl's home near Syracuse after a long Kosciusko residency. She suffered no suffering and passed peacefully. mother of 11, survived by grandchildren including Mrs. W. N. Tucker and Mrs. James Allegar. Funeral held at Dunkard church in Syracuse.
Dr. Wagner returns from Indianapolis with Eli Hunsberger of Wakarusa after a dog bite. The 27 year old was treated for hydrophobia at the Pasteur Institute. the dog was killed and its head sent to Indianapolis lab where rabies was confirmed. The patient was hospitalized for care.
Clarence Knickelbine aged two years, son of Mr and Mrs Fred Knickelbine, was placed in Mrs Work's Plymouth home by Judge Richter of Laporte. The father had wandered about the city with the child for weeks begging for food, leaving the boy in exposure and neglect. An affidavit charging the husband with failure to provide was filed by Mrs Knickelbine of Michigan City after learning of the child’s condition.
Logansport men met with Mayor Darrow in Laporte to secure a franchise for an interurban line planned to connect Laporte and Logansport and serve Knox Bass Lake and nearby towns. They aim to align traffic with the Murdock lines and an eastern syndicate is expected to finance the project next year.
Health officer Foltz of Elkhart complains of constant trouble enforcing health laws and threatens to appeal to the state board for an inspector. He says arrests are frequently dismissed and declares he will compel Elkhartans to comply with the law.
Officials of the St Joseph Valley Chautauqua Association have acted favorably on a plan to give a commission to Lichart Young as proposed by the committee.
The Lyon and Greenleaf company won a franchise and took over the old Draper electric plant in Ligonier. They plan a remodel and a continuous double unit system. Mrs Abbie Draper and her son left for San Diego, Cal, amid a long municipal controversy over public ownership.
Walter Hertel, 12, son of the Parkside grocer, was injured when a large firecracker exploded as he picked it up after lighting it in the street. His forefinger, second finger, thumb, and part of the hand were torn and mangled. He received care at Ash hospital then returned home.
Stephen S. Pangborn, jailed in Cassopolis Michigan on a wife murder charge, has signified willingness to plead guilty in court. He told Sheriff Rutter and Prosecutor Bresnehan he wishes to be sentenced and moved to the designated prison once business matters are settled.
Work on the first home for aged Methodists at Warren Indiana has begun with Mrs. Chopson turning the first earth. The Chopsons long planned the institution and expressed gratitude that their hopes are realized as construction starts.
The Hawks Electric Co occupies its new office and salesroom in the Ray S Greene building at 109 South Main Street, a space vacated by Tom Wagner's bank. Elegant office furniture adds to a handsome display area, improving presentation of their electrical fixtures.
Jennette Fennimore of Anderson Ind will deliver a socialist lecture in Goshen on Thursday July 22 Joseph Gallagher announced the engagement Fennimore is among the country to speakers and is expected to draw a large audience in Goshen
Mrs J A Kreighbaum of Elkhart received word of the death of her father H K Summers of Aaronsburg Pennsylvania at age 84. A brother Joseph Summers, a former Elkhart resident, died there several years ago.
A Goshen police report states four toy revolvers were confiscated from boys on the streets. Officers note the pistols are not permitted and urgency remains to curb unsafe play.
A severe thunderstorm struck the city just before 7 PM with northward lightning, heavy wind, and rain. St Marks church spire was shattered and trees damaged while Mrs Nusbaum's North Side home was struck. telegraph lines failed and basements flooded. Weather disrupted a Rogers Band Park event, but Goshen fair grounds track stayed usable after last night’s rain. Two men were shocked by lightning on Seventh Street near Madison, and Elkhart reported a similar storm with injuries at Lake Shore yards. A barn on John Weaver’s farm northeast of Wakarusa burned after a lightning strike.
The will of the late Jacob V Crawford is filed. It provides that the widow retains all property until her death or remarriage, then equal division among the children. Grandson Wallace Crawford receives 150 dollars. Executor is O H Crawford, with Jacob Oberholtzer and Q O H Conley as witnesses.
Mrs Vern Lamberson and Miss Henrietta Cook report a large cherry crop from their home on North Sixth Street. Nearly ten bushels have been picked and the tree remains unstripped.
Citizens of Columbia City are urged to bring bouquets for the Sweet Pea Contest on Tuesday between 4 and 6 p m. Awards will be announced Wednesday morning. The Hawks hardware company is noted in the civic notice about electric lights.
Harry G. Sommers, lessee and manager of the Jefferson, arrived from New York and will open the new season as Goshen’s fifth under his control. A long list of people visiting or returning to the area includes Miss Marietta Meyer in Elkhart, Mrs. W. C. Mishler at Lake Wawasee, and Miss Libbie Burnham from Cleveland. Numerous others travel for holidays or visit relatives in Toledo, Kalamazoo, Chicago, and beyond, with several staying for the Fourth.
The Elkhart circuit court ends its term with a light May docket as the Rink trials occupy much time. Next term in October will open the first Monday. Judge Dodge’s docket clears. Rink case may go to a third hearing. Grand jury idle. Court in Lagrange resumes Sept 6. Board of Equalization adjourns next Tuesday after 40-day session. County offices close Monday for national holiday. Real estate transfers include Charnley to Wurster Goshen lot for 4000 and Purdy to Work in Concord Sp. for 200, among others.
Speeding north on South Main during the storm the automobile lost control and struck a tree on Jacob Myers lawn. The car damaged the tree and lawn heavily before the driver fled, leaving only the number 137 on the Ind. plate and no identification available.
Eight tons of iron dropped eleven stories from the thirteen story Republic Building in Chicago and struck the sidewalk in front of the window where Miss Ola James of Goshen worked. The mass caused heavy damage but no one was hurt.
John B Kerstead a former Elkhart man who married Belle Decker died at his home in Breckenridge Col He was injured in his mine eighteen months ago and later suffered a stroke of paralysis Mir Kerstead was well known in Goshen.
