President Wilson urged Congress to grant control and operation of the nation’s telegraph and telephone networks. With a Western Union strike looming, action is pushed before the congressional recess, while Senator Sheppard of Texas introduces a companion resolution.
The United States formally presented to Turkey a report that Turkish troops attacked and sacked an American hospital at Tabriz Persia and seized the American consulate there. The State Department said the conduct of Turkish troops could influence U S attitude on the issue.
Washington July 1 Congress delays summer recess as the house sends the 12 billion army bill to conference with instructions to drop 300 senate amendments. Conferees face several days of work, making a recess before week’s end unlikely.
President Wilson today vetoed the appropriations bill for the legislative executive and judicial branches over a provision increasing government clerks' work hours from seven to eight per day. An attempt to override in the House was deferred 246 to 10.

Washington July 1 a new urgent deficiency bill was reported to the Senate today by the appropriations committee. It would appropriate 926 304 000 dollars for the military establishment and 50 000 000 dollars for additional war labor housing.
The army casualty list today includes 49 names with 5 killed in action, 4 died of wounds, 5 died of accident and other causes, 7 died of disease, 1 from airplane accident, 26 wounded severely, and 1 missing in action. Four Indiana soldiers are among the seriously injured: Edwin W. Steinwedie of Gary and Pots, Harl Hoffman of Terre Haute, Pliny Daily of Paoli, and Elbert H. Ramey of Richmond.
Moscow reports a state of war has been proclaimed in Archangel province stretching from the Ural mountains to Finland and from Valogda to the Arctic Ocean. It includes Archangel and Mourmansk ports, the Arctic outlet, with Allied efforts previously landing on the Mourmansk coast to protect the railway and supply routes.
Telegraph dispatch from Moscow dated June 26 reports Grand Duke Michael issuing a manifesto. He says it is his duty to restore and regenerate the Russian people and calls upon the people to overthrow the present government.
Portsmouth reports capture of the German submarine that sank the American transport President Lincoln. telegram from Lt. RLV. Tanges USN, held by the Germans when the transport went down, confirms his safety in Moho.
The British admiralty announced that the hospital ship Dandovery Castle was sunk by a German submarine 116 miles southeast of Fastnet on June 27. The loss was reported as a Teuton submarine attack, with casualties likely among the ship's crew and patients.
Harvey F. Banta, long time Goshen resident, will relocate permanently to Memphis. He will join the furniture trade there with the Gental Furniture Co. of the city. Abr. Teta remains in Memphis, with his five tenants in the apartment. Jat Bruen, connected with the Gent Furniture Co., has relocated to Munede to work with Moore Mfg Co., manufacturers of side mills used by the Bath Furniture Co. A port cochere will be erected at the remodeled Hotel Hattel.
Salinger Bros Co of South Bend files suit in St. Joseph circuit court seeking 600 from South Bend Brewing Association. They allege lease of store and basement at 318 South Michigan from March 24 1917 to April 1 1928, surrender in June 1918, and damages for wrongful possession and property harm tied to the Cliff Bains saloon site.
Horace Ellis, Indiana state superintendent of public instruction, sent notices to county superintendents prohibiting use of any school funds to pay agricultural teachers during the summer. The move comes after thousands in state funds were spent under wartime contracts with school corporations to hire agricultural teachers for the government food conservation program.
Ura D Crowe is named agent for Goshen Express following his father’s death. Le J Crowe becomes agent for American Railway Express in the city with Clayton El Bartholomew to be cashier. Drivers for Wells Fargo and Wells purport companies will remain with the new organization. Wells Fargo edgekhart agent in charge of combined offices. Two horse and buggy setups were stolen from hitching posts along West Lincoln Avenue north of Goshen and from John Sternberg west of the city. The Sternberg rig was found near Elkhart abandoned by thieves who fled ahead of pursuing officers. Gardners’ horse and buggy remain missing as of noon. Authorities aided by the Horse-Detective association.
More than 500 wheat fields of pure varieties, disease and weed free, are mapped in every county for fall seed use. Purdue Extension and U.S. Department of Agriculture workers identified and located the fields as part of the Way Wheat Predatation campaign. Funeral services for Ilmer Bo Garger, Elkhart county district supervisor, will be held tomorrow at 1:00 PM at West Side Church with burial at West Side cemetery.
A Goshen dummy officer was found at the intersection of two streets in the commercial center of New Paris, raising questions about a possible stunt or incident. Police were alerted and began a preliminary investigation.
Campaign continues as Goshen aims for a $116 000 city quota with over $25 000 already raised. A meeting at the City National Bank tomorrow will outline the continued drive and the broader effort to reach its annual $160 000 target.
M. A. Mittenthal aged 58, once a prominent Goshen resident, died at his Toledo home from complications of ailments. He moved to Toledo about 20 years ago and found success there. Survived by his wife and two daughters Mrs. H. Silverman and Mrs. Leo Jacobs. Remains brought back to Goshen and held at 414 South Main Street for funeral services tomorrow with Rabbi Weinstein officiating.
A fire on Edwardsburg road near South Bend destroyed a rostory and a half frame building. L. C. Worden owned the structure and a Polish boy, who slept inside, dragged Worden from the flames after finding him unconscious. A distant telephone delayed aid, but Worden survived.
Senator Tillman is reported seriously injured at his Washington home after a cerebral hemorrhage that began last Thursday. Doctors fear lasting paralysis from the stroke as efforts continue to stabilize his condition.
Mrs Myrtle Ferguson of Gary was brutally assaulted by an unknown assailant and left in critical condition. Police investigation ongoing as authorities seek identify attacker and motive.
Fr. Hottenroth of St. Johns Catholic church arranges a big Golden meeting with an open air tour vehicle built for Catholic Truth Guild lectures. David Goldstein leads the Knights of Columbus speaker caravan traveling from Boston, blessed by Cardinal O Connell, on a Pacific coast return education mission.
H J Weinke of South Bend a drug company salesman explains in Lafayette that the dry law restricts drugstores. He notes some say physicians can prescribe liquor but the law bars druggists from possessing alcohol except for sacraments or manufacturing.
Lieut Fred W Morrice formerly a News Times writer was likely fatally injured at Camp Grant Rockford TL after being thrown from a horse. He suffered a fractured skull and other injuries and underwent surgery. His father J W Morrice and brother Charles arrived from South Third Street as the hospital stay continued.
Barnum Bailey's circus moved from Fort Wayne to Chicago with five performances at White City. The July 6 and 12 engagements were swapped for July 1 and related routing reportedly linked to a New York Contra from Fort Wayne to Ridgefield.

John A. Mitchell, editor of Life, died at his summer home in Ridgefield after a stroke. The death was reported as sudden and a cause of apoplexy. Mitchell had guided the Life magazine through decades with a focus on editorial direction and literary content.
