Local gathering drew farmers and operators as County Threshermen discussed a plan for an organized association. Attendees reviewed goals, drafted bylaws, and set dates for future meetings to formalize structure and activities.
About eighty farmers met at Woodmen hall East Lincoln avenue to organize a local lodge of the Threshers National Protective Association. Supreme Deputy Wickhizer led the session with W W Weat and Edward F Griest assisting. The group viewed the order as a fraternal body for social welfare and defense, not a wage-raising group. A second meeting will elect officers soon as organizers plan further steps in Elkhart and Kosciusko counties.
The Wakarusa school case arguments consumed three hours as state lawyers Oscar Jay P L Turner and E E Mummert argued that school boards must be elected at the June town board meeting. Defense counsel C Hubbell and F W Brown contended otherwise Judge Ferrall took the matter under advisement.
A six round welterweight bout between George Wohlford of Goshen and South Bend’s Young Ward was indefinitely postponed due to Wohlford’s badly injured shoulder. Henry Wahlert and Kid Taylor replaced them for the program at Springbrook Casino, with a 9 pm show and tickets on sale. Also reported are old residents lists from nearby Wakarusa and a labor brief urging boycott of National Cash Register Co. of Dayton amid alleged union busting and wage cuts.
Goshen ministerial group issues a Christian Convention program for January 27 to 30 in the city. Services run with ongoing union evangelical meetings under Rev. W. E. Biederwolf and H. L. Maxwell. A bystander shattered the top of a glass showcase at M. M. Ulery billiard hall on North Main Street this forenoon, caused by a careless passerby.
Kosciusko county commissioners plan to establish a pest house in Sidney to confine all residents who refuse quarantine rules. They will remain there until cured and their homes properly disinfected.
Regular meeting of the Beacon Lights announced for Monday afternoon at the home of Mrs Mummert has been postponed. Officers were called to the vicinity of the Lake Shore depot last evening to quell a disturbance. The finest line of goods that money can buy at Liver Bron.
The two day session at Irwin Opera House featured speeches by H T McMahan on farming outlook and the value of manure as fertilizer, Miss Day on training for home making, Mrs Newell on farmer duties, and D I Duncan on potash use. Evening program included school glee clubs and remarks by Mrs J W Bates on family influence and marriage.
Walter H Deardoff aged about 68 formerly of Goshen was found dead in his room at the Hotel Nickel South Bend. Coroner's inquest planned with post mortem. He had arrived from Cleveland the previous day and registered as Walter H Dendorff Goshen Ind. The cause given as heart disease. Survived by two sons, George in New York and Samuel in the west. Funeral planned in Goshen.
Washington asks Postmaster M A Cornell to report clerk hours amid a proposed congressionally approved eight hour workday. If enacted after July 1, 1902 the measure would limit daily hours while claiming a government saving. The analysis notes clerks could be reduced by two or three in many second class offices without impairing service.
Judge John J. Gillett of Hammond was appointed to the state supreme court to succeed Judge Francis E. Baker, now United States circuit judge. Gillett, longtime Lake county circuit judge and former deputy attorney-general from 1887 to 1891, began his term as Baker retired today from the state court.
C. W. Sparks, a young War saw man, lies in Huntington jail on a charge of forging the names of his uncles John W. Sparks and Albert Sparks of Markle to a $185 check cashed at Citizens' bank. After shaving his moustache he fled to unknown parts and was later captured at Piqua, Ohio, near a tavern.
Amos Hackenburg died at his Stone Lake home on Tuesday January 21 after 22 years as a York township resident. Born December 31 1834 in Snyder County Pennsylvania he was a few days past 67. Survived by his wife six sons and three daughters.
Lake Shore adopted a rule giving sectionmen preference for firemen and brakemen positions to gain summer seasoning. Experience shows sectionmen promoted to these roles have poorer records and many resign to return to section work. Officials say irregular hours for firemen and brakemen contribute most to the theory’s failure.
Amelie R Thomas who has run an insurance agency here for a decade sold her business, eight companies, to Hyde and Brooks. She plans to move to Chattanooga Tennessee to live with her ailing daughter Mrs A B Glover. Companies include Aetna Fire Hartford Sun London Insurance and others in Philadelphia London and Erfurt.
Funeral services for the late Mrs Roy Bowser will be conducted at her home on Sunday at 11 a.m. A North Side resident reports a young man visiting her daughter and keeping her out skating in Elkhart until morning hours. Bargains, Bargai Stiver Brown, treats.
