New civil and criminal cases fill the Elkhart circuit docket as the December term closes tomorrow. Justice Whistler’s court reports fines for intoxication, and real estate transfers show numerous $1 filings. A horse theft remains unsolved despite broad circulations.
Mr and Mrs F E C Hawks will host a six o'clock dinner tomorrow Saturday evening for invited guests in their home as part of society events coverage.
Wayne Rice of Elkhart was declared a smallpox patient by the attending physician and the health department. A quarantine was established as Rice showed symptoms after two days of illness, during which he had contact with many people in a public institution. The disease is not believed to have reached the infectious stage.
Adoption of a law limiting club owners to paying up to 200 dollars per month per player will impact several Central league teams next season.
In Washington Beveridge spoke to Senator Culberson praising newly elected Senator Shively. He described Shively as able with address and power as an orator and urged granting substantial committee assignments for the incoming member. Culberson praised Shively and said he will consider the matter and write to Shively soon.
Cecil Congdon, Elkhart printer charged with assault, was brought to court this morning for transfer to the Elkhart superior court. No papers were presented, leaving no ruling and sending him back to jail. The case's proper forum remains unsettled amid conflicting court actions related to an Island Park incident.
Local business leaders in New Buffalo plan a joint appeal to Representative Barnhart of Indiana's 13th District to work with Congressman Hamilton of Niles for a federal harbor survey appropriation. Mrs. Walter C. Herr of South Seventh Street received a telegram announcing the death of her brother Will Hartman in Lancaster Pennsylvania. She had just returned from a visit there and he was in good wealth when she left.
The Noble circuit court jury found W. K. Rosenburg ex commissioner of Noble county guilty of assault and battery on Herman Kreiger Kendallville stock buyer. He was fined five dollars plus costs.
A Bible conference is held one mile west of Wakarusa at the Holdeman church. Instructors are D. D. Miller of Middlebury and S. G. Shettler of Johnstown Pennsylvania. The session closes next Tuesday evening.
A sizable group of Indiana Republicans will attend the Washington inauguration on March 4. Round trip fare from Indianapolis is listed at $22.50.
William Fleming charged with conspiracy and receiving stolen goods by W. J. Springborn appeared in South Bend Superior Court to arrange a new bond of 5 000 with National Surety Co to postpone proceedings. Old bond released. bondsmen freed. Fleming failed to appear in December triggering forfeit of 5 000. Prosecution stayed to Jan 30 term.
The St Joseph Valley Grange urged Representative Barnhart to back the parcels post bill and he pledged hearty support to advance the measure. The Progress club of South Bend and the Women’s Improvement club of East Rochester asked for flower seeds to distribute to members with premiums for best results, a plan Barnhart sees as a way to boost local pride and beautify homes.
In Kosciusko circuit court Thursday morning Rose Juday sought a divorce from James Juday alleging cruel treatment. James did not appear in person but was represented by counsel as Judge Bowser granted the divorce with $1,000 alimony. The couple resided in Syracuse.
Mrs. DeSoto H. Grant died in Las Vegas at 32 years. Born Grace B. Loney in Warsaw, she was a Warsaw High School graduate who completed studies at a Ft. Wayne seminary. Survived by husband and two children. Body to be shipped to Warsaw for burial.
Mariners recall the steamer Chicora wrecked on Lake Michigan on January 21 1905 during a severe storm while crossing from Milwaukee to Saint Joseph. All crew and one passenger perished with no bodies recovered.
Representative Barnhart and Senator Beveridge pressed a bill to reimburse the South Bend postmaster for his burglary loss. They secured a promise that the measure would be favorably reported to the Senate.

Mrs Frances Northway 74 wife of F G Northway died last night at her Elkhart home from arsenic poisoning after a week long illness. Survived by husband three sons one daughter three sisters and one brother.
Wm. Blakeman Jr., once a notable Laporte political figure and police officer, was found guilty of accepting a bribe as a Laporte circuit court juror. He received an indeterminate penitentiary sentence of two to fourteen years, ten years’ disfranchisement, and a $10 fine. Health concerns followed the case amid the Janovitch alienation suit testimony by Gus Stephens, son of the defendant.
If plans hold, St Joseph County will host a local option election in April. The anti saloon league has spent months organizing and will hold a large mass meeting at the Auditorium in South Bend with sermons in several churches. The funeral was conducted this afternoon at 2 30 o clock at the home of his sister Mrs Ed Miller in Elkhart. The remains were transported to this city for interment in Oak Ridge cemetery.
Last summer Milford saw substantial building and plans for a brighter year ahead. Several residences are to be erected and another business room discussed. Farmers near Milford will build new barns and more residences than last year.

Several arrests may follow as railroad officials have complained of repeated pilfering and difficulties in catching suspects.
Fred Maus leaves the South Bend News where he was an outside circulator and moves to Davenport Iowa Evening Times. Charles W. Dunkley resigns as sporting editor of the South Bend Tribune to join the Chicago Inter Ocean.

Milford Mail reports a suggestion by Haines Egbert of Goshen to fund repair of the Syracuse and Goshen road. Donations from auto users totaled hundreds of dollars and gravel was purchased. Supervisor McKane of the Syracuse north district will use a portion in spring. Goshen residents pledge more.
The First Brethren church ladies announce a pastry sale set for Saturday January 23 at Blough Bros & Mehl store. Items include cake pies bread doughnuts cookies salads baked beans noodles and more, with sale starting at 9 o clock. Marvin Cathcart once lived in Bristol about four decades ago died at his Buchanan Michigan home on Wednesday. He will be buried Sunday. An effort is underway to build an opera house in Wakarusa.
