A heated political battle over a Elkhart superior court bill intensifies. Goshen lawyers push to defeat or delay while Elkhart forces and Gov. Hanly are pressed to act. Delegates travel to Indianapolis to lobby senators and present circuit court statistics as telegrams flood the Capitol.
The council cut vault construction costs for Oak Ridge cemetery from 15 to 10 dollars per vault and will place the funds in the city treasury. The cemetery sexton receives 40 dollars monthly, plus rent free barn and house and pasture privileges, valued at about 50 to 55 dollars more per month. This lowers overall costs as most graves now have cement vaults.
Last evening Mrs. Jacob Flowers of South Eighth street slipped and fell in front of Abe Peck's on East Lincoln avenue, breaking her left arm. Thirty minutes later Mrs. John Sutherlin of Goshen also fell at the same spot, breaking her right arm. Both were taken to the same physician who treated the first before the second arrived.
Morningstar forced Sutton to his best to win but Sutton prevailed 500 to 472 to retain the 18.2 balk line championship. Sutton posted an average of 1724-28 while Morningstar finished at 1713-27. Morningstar’s brother Cyrus Morningstar of this city is noted.
The united evangelistic services this week at the First M. E. Church show strong quality and power. Rev. N. B. Mathes preached a well framed argument for Christian decision. Rev. J. W. Fradenburg conducted after services in a spirited manner. Choir sang "Far Away" and Mrs. J. S. Seybert offered "One Sweetly Solemn Thought." Tonight the chorus will sing "The Heavens are Telling" and Rev. E. A. Vannuys will preach. Public invited.
Richmond family on North Fifth Street North Side reported as smallpox patient Charles Richmond. Neighbor L R Blakeslee of 518 North Fifth Street fell ill but physician says no smallpox symptoms. Local health officer states overall situation satisfactory with no further cases evident.
Elkhart society notes Dora Rook hosts dinner Sunday with Laura Helfrick Claire Billings and Effie Sweitzer of Goshen in attendance for her birthday. Mrs T M Hatch hosts yesterday at I O Wood residence 124 South Seventh Street in compliment to Hallie Snyder of Arcola Illinois and Gladys Cobb of Austin Illinois as guests for the Adams Hatch wedding.
An OCR fragment reports a flat car with logs and a box car truck derailed at Lake Shore crossing while Big Four locomotives switched in the south yards. The northbound passenger scheduled for 4 32 PM was delayed as the track was blocked.
Goshen city council ordered Purl street paved east from Main to Tenth street despite remonstrances. The ballot: five in favor, two against. Voting for were Menaugh, Rimpler, Gotham, Greene, McGarvey. Opposed were Rhodes and Smith. The measure ends Goshen's long gap in street paving since 1899 with work to start in spring.
A fragment notes a guard at the Richmond residence on the North Side. The council met in session for about one hour and adjourned at around thirty o'clock.
Center Township seeks a 12000 subsidy for the Goshen South Bend and Chicago Railroad. Twenty seven freeholders petition county commissioners for a special election to decide the subsidy. The railroad agrees to cover election costs and to begin service once trains run through the township. Col Hord, promoter, says work will be pushed and calls it a sure go.
A so called Sunday base ball measure arrived in the house as an anti bill. Representative Henry P. Sicks of Lebanon introduced a law making Sunday baseball or football a misdemeanor for all play. He called Sunday ball playing a demoralizing influence and said many in his county want it stopped.
A Lake Shore train bound for Butler collided with a heavy stock car blown onto the main track by a high wind. The engine and baggage cars were badly damaged. Conductor Frank Reese and his crew spent about three hours restoring the locomotive and cars.
Leonard Merchant of the St. Joseph Herald sues D. D. Martin city editor of the St. Joseph Daily Press and J Staney Benyon of the Benton Harbor News Palladium for 1000 dollars after alleging in columns that he was taken ill with intense stomach pains following a Masonic banquet where oysters were served. The newspapers plan to contest the case.
The democratic members of the general assembly are invited to a dinner next Thursday at the Grand Hotel in Indianapolis with Thomas Taggart presiding. Dinner begins at 7 30 pm and following, the democrats will meet informally in the hotel lobby.
The district convention of the Knights of Pythias in LaPorte Indiana promises to be the largest gathering yet with delegates from 28 lodges attending. J W Morice of Goshen is on the program for a song.
Miller at LaPorte pressed the charge of assault with intent to kill against Morton Schull, agent of the Wabash railroad at Dillon. Schull testifies he was forced to shoot Benj Bush in self defense.
Mrs. John Quackenbush of North Webster visiting her sister Mrs. Benjamin Binkley fell downstairs Sunday and broke one of her Tower limbs.
A large steel vault door became the focal point of a bold heist in an American city as investigators combed the scene for clues. Police reported damaged premises and a suspected entry by unknown suspects. No injuries were immediately reported.
News from the court house reports Elias Maust a 43 year old printer from near Nappanee declared insane after confinement at Oklahoma hospital for the insane Norman. A commission led by Doctors Price and Klaus found him unfit and he awaits transfer to Longcliff asylum.
HERE AND THERE reports rebuild plans for the Home Telephone plant at Auburn with about $10 000 to be spent. Sylvanus Streeter, longtime LaGrange County resident, is dead in Springfield Township. Amos Townsend of Bluffton turns 90. Samuel Wintrode, Huntington citizen and former Huntington County sheriff, dies. Frank Poole dies after being struck in the head during roller polo at Kokomo. William Tarney of Garrett burns his eye when a torch slips in an accident at work. Joseph Z. Scott, early Huntington mayor and Civil War veteran, dies at 76. A Lisbon mill theft strips brass from machinery with chisels. Tom Revett, Butler night watcher for 25 years, receives business community gift. Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Conlogue of Kendallville travel to Tennessee for health reasons. he long edited the Kendallville Sun and Standard. A Bluffton case reveals a will probate discrepancy with the decedent alive and estate already settled.
Defrees and Mitchell are reported much improved while Clark and Kelly show slightly improved conditions.
Mortuary notices report William Horn of Goshen died yester day at home after eleven years of illness. Surviving family includes wife and ten children. Interment in Oak Ridge cemetery. Lydia A Wenger of Elkhart died after long diabetes illness aged 58. Paul Kurtz, 78, a long time county resident, died at home five miles west of Elkhart after four years illness. Funeral services set for this weekend with interment at Bainter town cemetery.
Samuel T. Murdock of Lafayette traction and J M Barrett Fort Wayne lawyer were in town yesterday en route to South Bend for a Northern Indiana purchase deal. Murdock said the rumors of the sale are substantially correct.
Indianapolis special report notes the House drain and dikes committee votes to indefinitely postpone a bill that would ban dredging lakes for marl used in cement. Syracuse leaders and lake residents lobbied until backing papers and petitions swayed the debate. a competing bill by Senator Gainard remains pending.
The Toledo and Western company filed with the secretary of state a certificate showing its capital stock raised from 10,000 dollars to 2,000,000 dollars. The firm, recently incorporated by F. C. Ford and others, plans an electric line from Toledo to the Indiana state line.
Col Hord met the city council committee to discuss a franchise for his New York Chicago ten hour line. He opposed other lines using his tracks and urged raising the city speed limit to 18 mph. Route into Goshen would proceed north on Ninth street to Purl, west to Seventh, north to Washington, then west to Main. He then went to LaPorte at noon where road work is advancing.
Clarke and Trainor Chicago contractors accuse the Elkhart board of public works of selling out to H. E. Bucklen who heads the Elkhart Water Company and attorney James H. State. They claim the Bucklen group received inside information before the bid was filed.
Indianapolis files bankruptcy petition for Daniel V Thomas of Elkhart. Debts listed at 18920.90 with 2150.90 assets. Creditors named on two typewritten pages. Thomas previously operated Indiana National Bank and was connected to Howard A Knevels book store.
