Jury convicts Frank Vicory of assault with intent to commit voluntary manslaughter and imposes 2 to 14 years in prison pending a possible new trial. The verdict followed a nearly two hour deliberation after a case seen as weak by some observers.
Miss Marie Ritchie of this city wed Mr Joseph Brady of Tulon Illinois in a morning ceremony at St Johns Church parsonage officiated by Rev Father Guendling. Only immediate friends attended with a reception planned at the bride’s South Sixth street home. The couple will relocate to Tulon next week. The Dramatic will join in congratulating them. A Feb 14 program at Central High School will feature a literary and musical event to benefit the High School Athletic Association fund with a committee named for the planning.
John W. Buzzard of Wakarusa and a school board member is critically ill with consumption. His bondsmen petitioned for release on his bond as school trustee and a successor will be chosen to replace him.
The Misses Murphy entertained about seventy guests at their North Main Street home with eight games of 32 point whist. Prizes went to Miss Agnes Geyer of Elkhart and James Garvey, with several out of town visitors attending.
Help wanted notice seeking a young man to learn the barber trade. Enquiries directed to the office. Also advertising electric steam baths and massage tube by H. E. Zimmerman M. E. upstairs west of Hattie Hotel Lincoln Avenue.
Rev. Biederwolf and Prof. Maxwell headlined revival services at the First M E Church drawing a large crowd. Maxwell led opening singing. Biederwolf preached on becoming a Christian, stressing personal relationship with Christ and the Holy Spirit. Evening songs and a quartet enhanced the program as Cottage Prayer Meetings and schedule details filled the week. The Mishawaka congress event followed with about 200 attendees from South Bend Elkhart and Goshen lodges and a reported plan for an interurban association.
At Regulation alleys Goshen All Stars won the first two of three games against Auditorium five of South Bend. A large crowd watched as Aston Letherman L O Furlong Robert Wurster John Yoder and Frank Bungay played for Goshen with Auditorium players Freehafer Gas mier Warrel Carskadden and Freehafer.
In a convention, saloonkeepers adopted a resolution compelling proprietors and bartenders to avoid profane language in their establishments and to curb profanity among patrons. The move is praised as commendable and timely, condemning the use of the Almighty’s name in vain.
Seare Gardner and Elkhart lawyer Henry Clay Dodge fought in the Hascall Hotel bar area shortly after noon. Dodge, head bandaged, left for home on the 1:30 train car. Dr Irwin sewed three gashes requiring ten stitches.
Miss Sadie Shirk aged 12 daughter of Mr and Mrs Michael Shirk of South Seventh street slipped on an ice covered sidewalk near her home at 5 30 last evening and broke her right leg. Doctors W B and M K Kreider reduced the fracture.
City Attorney J. V. Maier states the city is not legally obligated to refund taxes paid by the Morse heirs. A committee now handles the matter and is expected to rule for the city. The Republican state committee re elected Goodrich as chairman with a tight race for secretary won by Warren Bigler of Wabash.
Leroy Scott known as the dest mute was arrested in Marion for stealing silverware from the Virginia hotel. Francis E. Baker was unanimously confirmed by the senate as judge of the circuit court of appeals. The Democrat laments delays in paper delivery while Print price rises. City Engineer Hitchcock prepared a diagram of Ora Strine murder house for prosecutor Hile to present to the jury. Street hats offered by Mrs Cobaugh.
Frank J. Irwin offers a $100 prize to one member of Goshen high school's 1902 graduating class for the best oration. A female judge from outside the city will assess competition, delivery, and thought. If entries are few, contestants may submit compositions graded by an impartial distant judge.
