A South Bend candidate named Shively earns a caucus nomination for the U S Senate amid steady gains and broad local popularity. Support from home base helps drive a strong statewide campaign and a reported great victory signal.
B F Shively near his 52nd birthday will take senate seat on March 4 born March 20 1857 in St Joseph county son of Rev Joel and Elizabeth Shively. He taught school then started a South Bend newspaper and served in Congress amid banking currency and ways and means committees. He studied law at Michigan 1886 and polled record votes in governors races and campaigns. Married Laura Jenks in 1889 and remains active in the Democratic party praised for future Indiana Senate stature.
Indiana history note as B F Shively of South Bend is elected U S senator after twenty ballots. Kern leads early then fades with 42 votes on final balloting while Shively gains steady support led by South Bend Mayor Fogarty amid party caucus intrigue and a secret ballot shift.

David D. Rodibaugh of Elkhart county acted as a teller. The Shively forces seized control of the caucus organization.
In the house today Representative Sweeney introduced a bill to repeal the county local option and substitute a township and ward option law per the democrats state platform.
Special report from Indianapolis dated January 14 says the Republican senatorial caucus will be held tonight with Senator Hemenway's name the only one presented.
The Eagles lodge in the city initiated 30 candidates at their hall last night with a large turnout including delegations from Warsaw Syracuse Ligonier South Bend and Elkhart. An elaborate banquet followed the initiatory work and speeches were planned but time ran short. D M Bechtel presided over the ceremonies.

George Finne, 18, faced man slaughter charges in LaPorte after shooting neighbor Geo Priebe. Judge Richter gave an indeterminate term in the state reformatory, but Finne was paroled for good behavior. Finne said he acted thinking Priebe was a chicken thief amid a jealousy dispute over a girl.
B D Wallace considers starting the circus season away from Peru for the first time since 1881. Proposals to open in Chicago Indianapolis and St Louis next spring arrive, but no decision yet.
Mrs Ora Chalmers and her two young children aged two and one were arrested in South Bend on Tuesday afternoon on a beggary charge at the urging of Associated Charities and were returned to Michigan City.

George Bucknell of the Sherwin farm four miles northwest of Middleburn was dragged about three-quarters of a mile after his team ran away while he hauled furniture. He was found unconscious, later regained senses, and remained in serious condition. Burt Replogle and Jacob Stockemore took him home. the runaway mare team ran about a mile before being stopped at Joe Jarvis' place.
Gertrude Wilkinson sues Paul Byrer in Kosciusko circuit court for $20,000 damages. Special Judge Royse hears the case. Leesburg residents are involved. Wilkinson alleges Byrer pulled a chair from under her, causing a collapse to the floor and a permanent spinal injury.
Christian Weaver aged 52 died at Dunlaps and was buried near Goshen. His mother Mrs. Mary Weaver and daughter Mrs. Will Scheiber live in Nappanee. Henrietta Weymyer aged 73, native of Germany, died in Elkhart of pneumonia. Two sons Fred and William Schafer and ten grandchildren survive.
Senator Pearson introduces a senate bill allowing cities with populations of 6000 to 15000 to levy a special hospital tax. The measure was referred to the judiciary committee. Goshen has long sought a hospital and has worked to raise funds for the purpose.
The court heard Ulery versus Simpson over a building contract with the plaintiff seeking 96 dollars balance and the defendant countering with 200 dollars in damages. John Rupp versus Wm. Miller on a note was dismissed today.

After three hours of deliberation the Kosciusko circuit court jury found William Gunter of near Packerton not guilty of assault and battery with intent to murder. The charge stemmed from allegations by his brother Zack Gunter.
