The American transport Buford, laid up at Kiel for boiler repairs, is believed bound for Libau near Riga. The 249 involuntary passengers remained below deck while work continued and the crew were kept apart.
Mine operators in the central competitive field told the commission on the bituminous coal strike they would accept any award with one reservation. They would not support coal price fixing beyond the Lever Act period. The government has controlled feed and fuel prices. A separate note reports a robbery in Elkhart with $150 worth of jewelry taken from Mrs. Burt Hunsfeld. A dining room window was the entry point and a diamond lavislier was left behind.
Six Indiana cities will host batteries with South Bend named among them as a unit of an artillery regiment is set to be organized soon.
Martin Jagla, who escaped from St. Joseph County Jail in South Bend, was captured in Winamac after an apparent escape attempt. Authorities reported Jagla’s arrest without further incident.

Warren Berkey as attorney for the farmer Neterer has filed in circuit court to appoint a guardian for Mary Neterer age and infirm. The complaint states the defendant owns a large farm in Elkhart County and faces potential large losses unless a guardian is appointed.
A small balcony at the Bears hotel in Vertu is remembered for a past presidential address by William McKin Jex. An old Peru resident recalled a barbecue speaker once on that balcony whose dentures fell to the street.

The Women’s Franchise League of Indiana hopes for pledged senators to secure an immediate session call from Governor Goodrich who is ready to issue once the two votes are secured.
The Darragh Lumber Co of Goshen files articles of incorporation with the Secretary of State. Capitalized at 25000 dollars, directors include Charles A. Aitken GC Edwin Stout Ro Rieht and Roach. Offices to be in Goshen to buy and sell lumber.
Winter winds left country roads impassable around Goshen with eight autos stuck west of Dunlaps near the Christophal residence on the Lincoln Highway. Cars, tractors, and locals worked to free vehicles while interurban lines ran with little difficulty.
The Goshen fire department lacks a ladder long enough to reach high roofs prompting calls for new equipment. Fires damaged homes at 508 South Seventh street and 715 South Seventh street with several hundred dollars in losses while officials discussed council inaction on funding. Incidents arose from possible electrical causes and a machine fire at Fifth and Main.
Chairman Cummings announced a 17 member committee to organize the Democratic national convention in San Francisco June 28. For the first time two women will participate in preliminary convention arrangements, Mrs. George Bass of Chicago and Miss May B. Loy of Los Angeles. Edward G. Hoffman of Fort Wayne will represent Indiana.
Former Representative Miller becomes the new secretary of the Republican National Committee and assumes control of national headquarters. James E Reynolds, retiring secretary, opened HQ for Gov. Coolidge as a presidential candidate. The Rev Charles Rolit will preach at St James Church Wednesday at 7:50. All are welcome.

Yesterday marked the second anniversary of the region wide blizzard with temperatures dropping to 20 degrees below zero after heavy snowfall. The historical event is recalled as a defining winter milestone for residents and local archives.
The Panhandle railroad station at Culver was burned to the ground. Two trunks in the baggage room were burned.
Norris Dilton was shot by bartender Anton Ikasa during an argument over drink payments at the Eagle Point dry saloon 1402 Prairie Avenue. Dilton is in Jopworth Hospital with injuries described as potentially recoverable while Ikasa surrendered at the police station.
Dr. A. J. Irwin says the city health department books will be delivered at the expiration of current term limits the first Monday in January. Dr. Lemon and Mayor Charnley disagree but no clear plan is given. The board appointed by the late Mayor Troyer for four years from 1918 remains in office.

Funeral services were held at 2 pm at the Hawks home 216 North Third street with Rev Boward Hoblard of Chicago and Rev Duncan Weeks officiating. Burial followed in Oak Ridge cemetery. Attending mourners included Indiana Militia members, Masons, Knights of Pythias, and pallbearers Joe Hawks Wilbur Mayberry Grover Metzger. Local and out of state attendees listed with memory of late Louis K Hawks.
Alvin Yoder narrowly escaped injury when a speeding Wabash mail train hit his Maxwell touring car at the Elkhart street crossing in Wakarusa around 10 PM Friday. The car was demolished and Yoder, alone in the vehicle, was found unharmed among the debris.

Emanuel Dickey, jailed in Albion on a charge of criminal relations with his 12 year old daughter, committed suicide following a plan by his wife who hanged herself in 1916 in the same jail. The Dickey family lived at Kinmel and Mes. Dickey became demented enroute from Kinmel to Van Wert Ohio.
Thieves tapped a wine tank at the Michigan Central yard in Michigan City. The wine is en route from Argo Alabama to Brooklyn New York. A jug, funnel and dipper were used in the tapping.
Leo Parquette, 20, is under arrest in Fort Wayne facing mounting charges. Authorities describe him as having a long prior record.

Ten barrels of whiskey shipped through Peru on the Chesapeake and Ohio line were guarded while a freight car underwent repairs. The cargo, moving from Boston to California, remains in custody at the transfer point.

Mrs. James Sperou of Warsaw reported a burglary while she was in the backyard. A thief entered the residence and searched a dresser stealing a S400 golf watch and money. The robber confronted the three year old daughter before fleeing.

Body interred at Shaum cemetery in Elkhart County. Mrs Sarah T White 67 of Warren Ohio died visiting daughter Mrs Dr Wagner in Fort Wayne from apoplexy.
Mrs Guy W Dausman will soon enter the office of County Clerk Foulks as deputy. Formerly Miss Lah Davis she proved herself extraordinarily capable as deputy clerk before her marriage.
