The 26th annual institute of farmers began in the first reform church this morning. Attendance was up to expectations with C. B. Benjamin of Crown Point and Guy M. Rieth of the west of city serving as organizing chairman.
Forenoon program includes Yoder Brothers music, an invocation, and talks on soil fertility and commercial fertilizers by G. E. Metzger. Miss Esther Cline reads, followed by J. S. Bordner on growing large corn crops and Mrs. Jacob M. Frame presenting Only a Hayseed. Afternoon features Yoder Brothers music, election of officers, Boys and Girls Club work by Bordner, Orris Yoder reading, a talk on Hog Cholera by Dr. Kigin of Purdue, and a parcel post talk.
The 26th annual Elk Hart county farmers institute opened at the First Reformed church in Goshen this morning and runs through tomorrow. Attendance is strong. Chairman is Guy M. Rieth. C. G. Benjamin of Crown Point and Mrs. Stanley spoke on dairying and co operation. Benjamin urged dairying as a profitable, year round farm enterprise and detailed its fit with general farming and livestock needs. He emphasized cooperative organization and marketing as essential to modern farming success.
The text argues that farming cannot continue under fragmented bargaining. It urges farmers to demand a fair profit above production costs and to unite their forces to pursue a common aim, warning that individual action fails.
The Democratic county central committee in Elkhart met at the call of chairman Richard C. Lake and unanimously chose Willard H. Chester to fill the vacancy created by B. Frank Kindig’s resignation under the Indiana primary law. Chester declined the post, citing a prior decision not to participate in politics, and will continue his law practice with Ira H. Church. The committee plans another meeting to make a new selection.
At the regular meeting the finance committee reported that liberal gifts from Mary Baker Eddy trustees more than covered the church debt on the property. Arrangements are made to dedicate the church home at 111 No Fifth Street Sunday evening January 28. The property was bought in April 1934.
In Elk Heart rumors spread that Italian resident John Borning received a blackhand letter demanding over $1000. Later reports clarified Borning did not receive a letter, but his father in law claimed to have received a threatening note before Borning left for Chicago.
Mrs Edwin Roe aged 79 a former Bristol resident who with her husband F N Roe ran the Roe Hotel on Fast Main street in the building now owned by C Culp died at her home in Harrisburg Pennsylvania She is survived by a son Edward of Philadelphia and two daughters Ada and Carrie who live at home Deceased was an aunt of Mrs W F Wells of Bristol.
Gus Hill of New York, famed theatrical producer and former world juggling champion, visited town last night to inspect his Mutt and Jeff in College company as it is being prepared for city performances. He has built wealth from multiple Mutt and Jeff ventures and other enterprises.
Peter Mitterling, 50, died last night when a driven colt bolted into eastbound Pennsylvania train No. 48 at Warsaw Union street crossing. The buggy was demolished and the colt crushed. Mitterling, headed to John Cole’s home, left surviving several children. Conductor M J Princeville and Engineer E O Bradley led the train.
Washington January T. (Special) After investigating charges against rural carrier B. F. Tlartzog of Goshen post office the department ordered his removal effective January 15. He was also ordered to discontinue as a Ford salesman following complaints from automobile sealers and a second complaint confirmed the action.
Washington January 1 Special The President has received letters from Indiana and Illinois lawyers urging Judge Francis R. Baker of Goshen a member of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit to be appointed to the Supreme Bench to succeed the late Justice Larmer.
An official report states a British submarine was sunk off Texel Island with the entire crew of 38 rescued by the Dutch cruiser Noord Brabant and taken to the Dutch port of Den Helder.
Amelia M. Young Adair widow of Judge J. W. Adair of Columbia City died at her daughter Mrs. Josephine Patten home in Columbia City. Born in Noble county in July 1845, she was the daughter of John and Sarah Young and married Joseph W. Adair July 27, 1867. Her death was unexpected.
A two year old son of John Chapp living 2.5 miles northwest of Nappanee was burned to death after clothes caught fire while the mother was away at the barn. The child lived only a few hours after the accident.
Mrs Martha A Robinson died of cancer at her home near Milwace Kosciusko County. She leaves a husband nine children five grandchildren and several parents and siblings. Burial was at Wep ler church near Nappanee.
Professor Arthur Deamer, superintendent of Laporte public schools, resigns to accept the Fargo public schools superintendency in North Dakota. He will take the new position next June with a salary of 3500 dollars per year, having come to Laporte from Rochester.
John C Irwin of South Bend formerly of Goshen and an agent for John Hancock Life Insurance Co wrote policies aggregating more than $200000 in 1915.
Wm. Martin of Milford has started an auto bus line from Nappanee to Wakarusa and Elkhart with a return run. He plans to move to Nappanee if he secures enough business.
South Bend Opportunity Central baseball officials visit the city to gauge local support for joining the league of 1516 and gather input from fans.
Harvey Babb of Jefferson Township received a telegram from Grand Rapids Michigan informing that his mother had died at that place.
Representative Cline of Indiana introduced a bill to amend the voters emerser cd war tax act to exclude mutual insurance companies from its provisions.
Charles E B Smith former bank cashier at Mitlersburg State Bank becomes eighth grade teacher in Milersburg schools succeeding Miss Searer.
Assessors who met in Indianapolis have adjourned after a contentious session. No further details provided on attendees or outcomes.
J J Kelleher a well known contractor dies at his Frankfort Indiana home. He improved highways around Elkhart and was noted for his work on local road projects.
Martha Rodibaugh filed suit in Goshen circuit court against Amos P. Blosser seeking 2500 damages after a auto driven by Swoveland collided with her buggy at Sixth and Jefferson on Oct. 22 1915. She says two ribs were broken and she required four weeks of medical care. Swoveland is believed to be Blosser's nephew.
The Democrat reports receipt of a government calendar from Louis B. Noble now in Washington as clerk of the printing committee of the United States House of Representatives, chaired by Rep. Barnhart. The calendar is from the Government Printing Office.
The First English Lutheran Sunday school elected officers for 1916. Superintendent Charles A Croap, Organist Miss Helen Tiedeman, Secretary Miss Mary Case were chosen to lead the school.

City Attorney Hall of Elkhart releases PUC decision stating the city may adopt lighting plans as long as they are reasonable. Municipal ownership is barred initially and only Indiana & Michigan Electric Co. can bid. If I&M refuses to bid by Jan. 11, the city can petition to allow other builders to construct and own the street lighting equipment.
Quinby L. Pindell a 46 year old Big Four conductor died at his Elkheart home after six weeks illness. He served 25 years with the company and 14 as conductor. Born near Elkhart May 29 1875 he married Phoebe Maloney on Feb 27 1898. Survived by wife two sons his father Collins Pindell and four sisters.
The first of six dances by the Winter Dancing club is set for this evening at the K. of P. hall with Messick's orchestra of South Bend providing the music. Mrs Noble Rhoads hosted the Embroidery club Thursday afternoon. Mrs H Carpenter hosted the C. M. C. club yesterday afternoon.
Margaret Louise Mowan eleven months old daughter of Mr and Mrs Curtis Mowan of North Second street died yesterday from grippe and complications. Survived by her parents. Funeral this afternoon with burial in Sidney Indiana.
The Lagrange correspondent reports HA O Eldridge recommended by Congressman Cline for the LaGrange postmaster position. He will likely assume duties January 16 as Postmaster McDonald’s nine year term ends January 15. Eldridge edits the LaGrange Democrat Call.
Charles W. Hammond, who operated a Milford meat market for 25 years, has retired. Henry Holtaman will take over the Hammond location after purchasing Ed. Gammack drug stock. Hammond concluded three meat markets could not be profitable in Milford.
Services at the Presbyterian church for the week of prayer end this evening with preparatory rites for the quarterly communion to be held Sunday morning. An invitation is extended for all to attend.
The Milford Mail indicates Dr Yan Bysterveld of Grand Rapids Michigan is practicing in Milford. He was twice prosecuted here. Local business at Milford is cited as Dig.

Fifty pupils were absent from Ligonier schools in a single day due to an epidemic of measles colds lagrippe and tonsillitis. Only ten percent of twenty fourth grade pupils were present.

Mrs Harriet C Brownell aged 78 died at Lawton Michigan and her body was sent to Edwardsburg for burial with Elkhart relatives.

Methodist congregations in Indiana will raise $100000 by March 12 to fund an addition and improved equipment for the Methodist hospital. The pledge was agreed at a meeting of superintendents from the Indiana, Northern Indiana, and Northern District Conferences in a session here.
The supreme court may hear a petition to settle criminal liability for a voter participating in another party's primary. The issue centers on Republican and Progressive fusion plans in northern counties for the March 7 primaries.
