Relics of the Elkhart County Historical Society are being moved from the council chamber to a new basement room in the court house. County commissioners and council provided cases and equipment. Skull of 1838 LaPorte murderer used by city schools
The skull of David Scott, who killed Joshua Coplin near Belling Prairie in 1838 and was hanged in LaPorte, is owned by Dr. George M. Dakin. After execution, fearing interference, Scott made a partial confession and was buried in a Coplin farm grave. Two medical students later helped dig up the coffin for dissection at Dr. Teegarden’s office.
