James Kirby Risk, elected chairman of the Tenth district Democrats at Monon, aims to succeed W H O'Brien as state chairman at Lafayette. He already holds precinct, city, county and district chair roles, a first for local Democrats to have one man in four posts at once.
Frederick Howenstine senior, a longtime Goshen resident born in Switzerland, died this morning at his North Main Street home after weeks of illness. Survived by two sons, he served as justice of the peace, studied law, and was active in insurance before leaving public life. Funeral Sunday at Fife Avenue ME Church.
In Elkhart proceedings the defense sought pages from the Elkhart County Medical Society record book to bolster a defense while the state objected to the material. Agent P Herrig of Chicago for Western Adjusters Association adjusted the fire loss on the William Parfitt photograph gallery and art studio burned early last Sunday. Parfitt carried insurance totaling 34 450 and was paid 2.50 after salvage was deducted. The gallery will reopen next Monday, and building repairs will begin immediately.
Society items note Miss Dausman entertained several young kudio friends yesterday at her South Sixth Street home with games and light refreshments. George Henry Carter and Laura Mabel Harrold were married last evening at the bride's parents home with restricted attendance. They will reside in Goshen after a wedding supper. The Twentieth Century Club enjoyed a six o'clock dinner at the home of Mr and Mrs. Minnieh on Seventh Street with 28 covers, featuring Green and White as colors and Progressive opera as the evening's theme.
Franklin Ponteys Poutus aged about died at home in Elshirt this morning from heart trouble. Survived by wife three daughters father and two sisters. Allen Cooper died Wednesday night at home of his parents North Sixth Street aged about 21 born in Huntington. Survived by parents six brothers and one sister. Funeral at family residence with burial in Claypool tomorrow morning.

Mrs EeRoy Nulf of Ligonier underwent an operation for cancer at a local hospital. Diezekiah Bauman of Clinton Township is recovering from blood poisoning and lockjaw. Herman Boch of Harrison Township had a grip attack that developed pneumonia and is now slightly improved.
In Indianapolis the state railroad commission petitions the superior court for an injunction to prevent the Big Four railway from violating a 1903 schedule regulating excess baggage charges. It alleges several roads fix higher rates to suit themselves, enlarging revenues substantially.
Shipshewana correspondent urges the local telephone company to build its own line into Goshen and establish a direct line to Topeka, criticizing current service to Lagrange and Topeka as unsatisfactory.

James Haverstock of Topeka in Lagrange county kindled a kitchen stove fire then left the home to fetch fuel. On return the residence burned. Mrs. Haverstock escaped in nightwear with a blistered face. He stayed on the second floor to save valuables, jumped when stairway burned. Loss near 1000. building insured for 490 with contents uninsured.
The proposal to spend 12,900 for a new Syracuse school building was rejected for the second time. Voters totaled 294 with 140 in favor and 14 against. the majority against the debt was eight. Six ballots were mutilated. The Syracuse Register notes opposition stemmed from the chosen site.
Report shows ballot totals for district chairman election at the Plymouth convention held yesterday. Cando, Stevens, Ogden and O Neil listed with various vote counts. nomination made unanimous on motion of James A. Bell seconded by W. P. O Neil.
Mrs Elizabeth Hattel aged nearly sixty five died this morning at her daughter Mrs Charles A Harper home at Sixth and Jefferson streets. She was widow of Jacob Hattel Sr who died April 25 1899 born Franklin County Pennsylvania June 19 1820 and married September 30 1841. Survived by two sons George W and Benjamin F Hattel two daughters Mrs Harper and Mrs W B Burt eight grandchildren four great grandchildren. Funeral services set for Sunday.
The Warsaw Union reports Mil ton M. Deering of St. Louis a civil service agent has visited Warsaw to probe campaign fund assessments under civil service law. It states Judge Royse and R. W. Nelson, subjects of the inquiry, likely showed they did not violate laws in obtaining contributions for the county central committee.

Gov Hanly reappointed Patrick O’Brien of South Bend to the state board of control. O’Brien, who recently visited President Roosevelt in Washington, proclaimed himself a Roosevelt Democrat.
Miss Marie McDonald daughter of the late C A McDonald of South Bend shows slight improvement today but complications from typhoid fever have made her condition serious.
At a Chicago gathering of railroad officials the aim was to coordinate a response to the Pennsylvania system ending all passes. Major trunk lines such as the Pennsylvania, B and O, and the Norfolk and Western aligned, while smaller lines objected to surrendering their option to issue newspaper passes. The Lake Shore did not attend.
Ex Senator J. E. McDonald, editor of the Ligonier Banner, was unanimously re-elected to the state board of agriculture this week, marking his seventh election. He first won in 1894 defeating R. M. Lockhart of Waterloo, who had served 20 years. Jim has long been at home among the farmers.
Edmund Day wrote Behind the Mask a four act melodrama performed at the Jefferson before a small audience. It shows potential with better writing than typical low priced fare and a capable cast led by Stanley Johns and Hedda Laurent. Winona plans completion of the initial electric line in spring. The Warsaw division cars will run by mid April and Winona aims to inaugurate service between Warsaw and Peru, linking with Wa bash Valley and Central Indiana systems. The Democrat reported Cc. R. Myers of Clinton township has been employed by the Canadian Land & Improvement Co. to supervise a five-section farm in Canada aimed at cultivation this year. Myers, a company member, has been chosen treasurer and will oversee the farm and spend substantial time there.
In Lower Thirty of the Chicago Tribune a farmer named Solon Perfinger near Goshen Indiana was chased by an enraged bull into a field and gored on the lower thirty. The fragment notes the incident occurred on a farm, with no further details provided.
In Indianapolis on January 2 many say W H OBrien the Lawrenceburg banker may face renewal when the new Democratic state central committee meets next Monday. Pierceton has granted the right of way through the town and a franchise for the Winona Fort Wayne interurban line. The project will be completed within two years and possibly sooner. The right of way for the entire road has been secured.
Prof. B. F. Moore of Marion public schools is proposed as a candidate for superintendent of public instruction. It is said the boom was started without his knowledge.
