The city welcomed 1903 with watch services at Fifth Avenue M E church and First M E church. A cannon salute rang in the new year as crowds gathered for social events and open houses hosted by local families and clubs.
Arnold dies at home on North Seventh Street from consumption aged about 54. Born in Ohio, he leaves wife Susannah and eight children across Silver Lake Sidney Packerton Warsaw and the city. Remains to be shipped to Silver Lake with funeral near that place officiated by Rev. W G Parker. Gemberling dies after weeks with paralysis near Elkhart. Odd Fellows member. New phone line connects Millersburg to New Paris Central with ten subscribers aiding business. Fred A Hamlin leaves St Joe and joins South Bend Tribune staff next week. Lake Shore railroad reports 1220 trains in December indicating heavy business. Banks and post office closed. autos given away at Elk’s Fair with one ticket per paid admission. The Business Men's Protective Association hosts its fifth annual banquet tomorrow at the K of P hall. About 135 tickets sold, with an attendance estimate of at least 175. O M Curtis will be toastmaster, six toasts planned, Rogers Orchestra engaged for music.
Judge Ferrall will not return to the circuit bench this term and will travel to recover health. Anthony Deah continues as special judge for the Dr. Gulmyer trial starting next Monday. Deputy Fleming resumes duties under Clerk Kinney. Peter A Kouper sought a marriage license amid questions of authority. The Baptist Church annual meeting reported a healthy treasury and new officers. Local crime and traffic notes include theft cases, a train obstruction, and a fatal burn at Ashley.

C D Nett of Peru faced financial trouble but will recover from a morphine attempt. Amon Graham near Wabash tried to hang himself but survived. his mind has suffered for some time. George Martz of Hartford City injured a hand at the electric plant and assisted himself by feeding the wound and calling a surgeon. In Wabash County districts merge schools and use interurban lines to ferry students to schools at lower cost. Joseph Werner, long listed as dead in the Wabash G A R post, is found alive in Silver City New Mexico. The Kerlin gas pumping station burned due to leaking gas ignited by hot pipe. 20 000 loss and 500 Montpelier customers affected until rebuilt. T J Driscoll of Fort Wayne was station manager.

Many others from Chicago Indianapolis Milford South Bend and Elkhart are noted as guests callers or travelers with arrivals to Ligonier Nappanee Goshen and surrounding communities.
Elkhart County Teachers' Institute ends tomorrow after a highly successful run. Today overflow filled the courtroom with chairs in aisles and hallways as Prof King and Rev C Cles held sessions on educational topics. Prof Dunn spoke on The Meaning of Education and The Aim of Education while Prof Cozine directed music.
