Milford man George Bartholomew faces a Warsaw justice court hearing next Monday as investigators probe the death of his wife. Coroner Nelby has not yet issued a verdict, with fingerprints and detectives continuing to examine the Bartholomew home.
The local Republican group endorses George R. Harper for election commissioner. He will serve at the primary on May 7 and the general election on November 8.
Lieut Russell S Berkey of this city, son of Mrs. Leonora Berkey, is promoted to lieutenant senior grade in the U S Navy. His commission is dated October 15 and he serves aboard the battleship New York.
The Marion County jail in Indianapolis is under smallpox quarantine with one inmate infected. All inmates have been vaccinated as a precaution.
Mrs. Alfred Carpe mother of Mrs. Sam Burnstein of this city, suffered a severe stroke of paralysis yesterday afternoon at her home in Jackson Michigan.
Tom Dantes, a co owner of a Boston shoe shining establishment, won second money at a pool tournament held in South Bend.
Cap J B Workman presented E E Fisher a roving cup at the courthouse ceremony. Fisher retires as county commissioner on January 7.
County offices will close Monday at noon for settlements and remain closed Wednesday morning.
The Associated Press reports that U.S. railroads refused a 40 percent pay rise demand from organized workers and shifted responsibility to the federal government. The railroad war board ordered the Pittsburgh operating committee’s headquarters moved to Washington.
Paul Henning, a naturalized German, pleaded not guilty at arraignment in New York on treason charges. He is held without bail. Henning worked in a Brooklyn torpedo factory and is accused of rendering torpedoes useless for the U S government.
In Palestine north and northeast of Jerusalem British forces beat back four Turkish assaults, advancing about two and a half miles on a nine mile front. Turkish losses are described as very heavy and among the prisoners reported are several Germans.
The Admiralty announced that three British destroyers were lost on the night of December 22 near the Dutch coast due to torpedo strikes or mines. The official count reports 198 officers and men perished.
American Ambassador Prancis reports that B. R. Stevens manager of the National City Bank of New York branch in Petrograd and his assistant Mr. Link have been released after their arrest when Bolsheviks seized the bank.
Unconfirmed reports circulate in Petrograd that King Ferdinand of Roumania abdicated in favor of Crown Prince Charles. Officials have not confirmed the rumor.
President Wilson prohibites further executions of American soldiers except in Pershing's forces abroad until court martial sentences are reviewed in Washington. The order restricts military executions and directs review in the capital.
Washington, Dec. 29. It was announced by Federal Fuel Administrator Garfield that there will be no general revision of coke prices for 1918. Coke prices fixed last September will remain in effect.
The report states Austro German attacks on the Italian front have not resumed with Berlin claiming counter actions have broken down aggressor efforts. In some places Italians are described as the aggressors. The undated AP dispatch notes no renewed Austro German assaults.
Winchester Indiana December 29 Mrs Elizabeth P Goodrich 77 mother of Governor James P Goodrich died at the governor's home after a long illness authorities said she passed away today at the residence in Winchester Indiana.
Charles L. Beaver of Gary Ind sold his house and four lots in West Riverside to Henry Dillman of Harrison township through Albert Weaver. Dillman will take possession February 1.
Mrs. Mildred Fay seeks reappointment as police matron at Elkhart. She requests renewal of her appointment to continue duties overseeing female prisoners and assisting the police department.
Morrice Kelly Co buys Goshen Ice Co from George Hinderer Mrs Anna Leibole and Miss Nettie Hinderer. Purchase includes real estate on Monroe street ice houses running gear and ice on hand plus name and goodwill. New owners plan to take possession and resume operations. business established about 42 years ago by Christian Hinderer and run by son George since his father's death.
Daniel D. Schurtz of South Bend, formerly of Goshen, sues Elkhart city and board members over unauthorized entry on a 13 acre Studebaker Park tract and cutting 32 trees last February. He alleges the action violated the 1914 poplar tree ordinance and that Henry Row then took the timber for himself.
In Los Angeles two South Bend men are arrested on embezzlement charges. Benjamin H. Geyer, former freight agent of the New Jersey Indiana & Illinois railroad, allegedly misappropriated 3000 dollars. Albin M. Hosinski, former assistant cashier of Citizens National Bank, faces embezzlement charges involving 10400 dollars.
Arthur Wilson of South Bend narrowly escaped death when a 32 calibre revolver aimed at a sick dog shattered the front door and lodged in the wall inches from his head. Sam Beck, firing at his dog from a nearby shanty, claimed ignorance of English when questioned.
At a library auditorium meeting last evening the Goshen Medical society elected officers for 1918. President Dr H. W. Eby, Vice President Dr I. J. Becknell, Secretary Dr W. B. Kreider, Treasurer Dr E. E. Ash, Librarian Dr A. C. Yoder, Censor Dr D. L. Milter.
Miss Anna Greenleaf age 16, daughter of Mr and Mrs Fred Greenleaf of Indianapolis former Goshen residents, died at home after a prolonged illness from consumption. Survived by parents and sister Jean.
The Baptist church will hold its annual business meeting on Monday December 31 at 8 p.m. After the business portion the youth group will lead the program and serve refreshments. Members and friends are urged to attend.
Police in Elkhart reported multiple petty thefts this morning. Incidents occurred at the Sinclair Oil Co. office and Schultz clothing store, among other locations.
The Salvation Army aims to raise $40,000 in Indiana to fund its military camps program. The appeal focuses on financing camps work and supporting related youth and community outreach efforts.
Charles Payne and Margaret T M Shermadine of Elkhart were united in marriage in a ceremony reported by the local paper. The couple joined as husband and wife in a small community service reflecting joyous family and social ties.

Society notes report Miss Myrtle Loucks and George Mc Cliti¢ married at the bride’s parents home in Wakarusa with Rev. C Metzler officiating. Both newlyweds worked for the local telephone company.
Governor Goodrich may be asked to declare Sunday February 3 as Thrift Day in Indiana. War Savings headquarters has mailed to county chairmen a request urging ministers to observe the day with services and ceremonies.
The Wakarusa Tribune notes that Ruth Stewart, from Wakarusa, is among 45 graduates from Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. She completed a two year course in Bible Doctrine Gospel Music and Practical Methods of Christian Work.
The condition of Martin V. Kesler after appendicitis surgery at Goshen hospital is considerably improved. Miss Beulah Beal remains at home recovering from tonsillitis.

Mayor-elect Francis BR. Carson of South Bend announced his slate of appointees today. The official list was reportedly badly cracked and unsettled.
Seventeen year old CORP W G McKinney son of Oscar McKinney of 324 North United Street is in training at Camp Greene Charlotte NC after enlisting at the South Bend recruiting station April 4 1917. He attended Chandler school and spent Christmas with his parents before being sent from Indianapolis to Jefferson Barracks St Louis Fort Bliss Gettysburg before Camp Greene assignment.
Military notes from Gary include 23 year old James MacKinzie killed in action with the Royal Scottish Jubileers after volunteering in 1914 and fighting at Loos. He had not heard from his mother in over nine months. Red Cross informed her of his death. Also listed are navy promotions for Lieut. Commander Royal R. Ingers of Laporte, Capt. Frank P. Abbott stationed at Camp Custer, and others such as L. D. Barnhart, G. W. Strohm, plus Serbian residents joining U S service in Gary and Erwin Davidson with the American ambulance force in France.
Elizabeth M. Reese files suit in superior court asking for divorce from Clement Reese. She seeks alimony of 500 dollars and a restraining order to prevent interference. The couple married in 1892 and separated last week.

Elkhart County commissioners approve a January 1 reorganization. Edward Iffert, Almon Leer, and W. Griner will fill three district terms, with Dr Irvin Beecknell named county health chief at $1000 yearly. Elmer Ganger becomes infirmary superintendent at $1000, replacing John Paul Michael whose term ends next March. Janitor changes: Amasa Blouth, Herman Dalka, and Chris Weiss appointed, with Blouth to remain cemetery sexton.
A Washington dispatch to the Indianapolis Times reports the number of U S millionaires with incomes of 50 000 rose from 7509 in 1914 to 17085 in 1916 more than doubling since the European conflict began. It notes a third of these wealth holders in New York and another third in other eastern cities with many relocating to cities after accruing wealth.
Victor Palmer and Clyde Straight of the state board of accounts finished their field duties in this county and departed for new posts in Terre Haute and Fort Wayne. Bert Stout, who helped here, resigned to join a Thorntown bank. The trio introduced improvements and systematized county records after examining three years of accounts.

Charles A. Sanford, Elk hart county sheriff, begins the final half of his term on January 1 after posting an 85 000 bond in place of a prior surety bond. Signers include Henry Bechtel, Thomas A. Davis, Will Hire and Benjamin G. Schaefer.
Dr S L Kilmer aged 68 died at his South Bend home after weeks of heart illness. He graduated from Rush Medical College in Chicago in 1877.

Washington reports that destroyers Fanning and Nicholson sank a German submarine on November 24 as it attempted to attack a merchant convoy. The crew surrendered after depth charges and gunfire. some swam to U S ships and were aided with ropes and hot food and clothing.
London Dow 29 Gen Maude, the conqueror of Baghdad, who died recently of cholera in an army hospital in Mesopotamia, is buried in the British cemetery north of Baghdad beside the old Turkish cavalry barracks. A wooden cross marks the grave with wreaths and flowers laid beside the grass.

Charles Heckelman aged 88, born in Prussia, Germany, lived in Mishawaka more than six decades, died at his daughter Mrs. Henrietta Mitchells home. Another daughter Mrs. Charles Hage Dorn of South Bend survives. Miss Viola M. Ewers, an 18 year Mistblwaka orphanage teacher, died of heart failure after a 40 year teaching career. Body sent to Milton, Indiana for burial.
