In a morning session, county council approved an appropriation of $13,474.2910 for the year. The meeting focused on closing business and finalizing annual allocations. The action sets the annual budget and authorizes the related expenditures for the upcoming year.
Elkhart county council met in special session to close 1916 business, appropriating 138474.29 including 1375 for county treasurer delinquent tax collection, 575 for agricultural agent Metzger, and 2850 for sheriff and juvenile expenses. Showalter will be succeeded by Almon Leer. election opens with two democrats and one republican. Ed ward Iffert to take seat Jan 1 1918. Winship to start new two year term next Monday.
Dale Crouse twelve year old son of Bert Crouse of Ligonier underwent brain surgery in Toledo to remove a bullet lodged there for two weeks. The surgeon made a forehead incision about the size of a silver dollar, lifted a skull section, and removed the bullet after an accidental shooting by a playmate. The boy has a good chance for recovery.
Robert Kuntz, 38, was arrested in Gary after an alleged attack on his wife. He reportedly drank whiskey and assaulted Mrs. Kuntz at their home. A neighbor reported a three year old daughter fleeing to the street and crying for help.
In San Francisco Mr and Mrs Robert Fisher formerly of Kendallville are visiting. Mr Fisher once ran a saloon in Kendallville.
Mrs Clark Ednie is reported in a serious condition at her home on the West Side. The notice notes she has been ill and remains under care.

Clifford Boyd 23 Frank Craft 26 and Clifford Collins 25 all list Chicago as home and were captured in Albion after a Christmas Monday dawn chase by Noble county Sheriff Sawyer. The trio broke into Avilla postoffice and six stores stealing clothing whiskey money and a seven passenger Willys Knight car later abandoned. Miss Lou H. Hosick operator of Weiand's cafeteria at Fort Wayne is defendant in a $5000 damages suit by Grace D. McBeth who says her husband Archie McBeth manager of the cafe abandoned her for Miss Hosick. McBeth had filed for divorce on Dec. 23 and reportedly plans to marry Miss Hosick. All parties are described as prominent.

J C Werkhoff aged 85 died at his son’s home in Indianapolis after a long illness. He and his wife had planned to move to Elkhart to live with a stepdaughter Evelyn Harvie, but ill health prevented the move. Survived by his wife three children from a former marriage one stepson and one stepdaughter. Burial occurred in Indianapolis.
Constable Mile Powers reports a known party entered his barn last night, stealing about a half ton of hay and severely cutting a horse. Settlement is pending, but further damage will prompt prosecution per the constable’s morning statement.
W C B Harrison editor of the Ligonier Banner was painfully injured when he slipped and fell as he left a Northern Central train at Elkhart. He was traveling from Ligonier to Wakarusa to spend holidays with Mrs Harrison’s relatives.
In New Market a small village ten miles south of Crawfordsville with under 350 residents has ten people all over 80. Their combined ages total 844 years, highlighting an unusually aged local population and suggesting a notable aging pattern within this rural community.

Miss Grace Anson of Warsaw and C G Kronmiller of Fort Wayne married at St Joseph Michigan on October 28 1916. They kept the news secret until Christmas.
The sixteenth annual conference of the Indiana state board of tax commissioners and county assessors will be held in Indianapolis Tuesday through Thursday, January 24, 1917. Sessions will be in agricultural room No. 12 of the state house. Representatives from Elkhart county are preparing to attend.

Undertaker Brown of Ligonier tried an automobile trip to Hawk patch but stalled in show drifts. A farmer with sleds towed the car free and Brown phoned to town for a horse and sleigh to continue to his destination.

Paine of Cleveland and formerly lived in Goshen. Ella Woodman, formerly of Goshen High School faculty, teaches at Huntington. The Huntington High School staff includes 45 members with over 1,000 students enrolled.
Paul Yeisley, 10, son of Rev. Yeisley of Plymouth, won $1 from Willis Logan of Marshall County. Logan had advertised through the Plymouth Republican that the first child under 14 to name the first emperor who made a law against God's Sabbath would receive the prize. The boy answered Constantine I, also called the Great Roman emperor Flavius Valerius Constantinus.
Henry Whitaker, retiring Lake County sheriff next Sunday, asks Governor elect Goodrich to appoint him warden of Michigan City prison to succeed E. J. Fogarty. The job pays $4,500 annually. Whitaker is a Republican and Fogarty a Democrat.
