Petrograd dispatches report the Brest Litovsk peace talks resumed after a one day pause with Germany seeking a postponement to January 24. German forces move troops from the eastern front to other fronts while bombardments continue on the western front despite the armistice limits.

County council members are called to meet Friday to finalize appropriations for 1917. The county commissioners will be in session then as well. Next Tuesday Edward Hiert, Republican, will succeed Ed. Fisher, Democrat, as county commissioner from the Southern district.
Chicago dispatch reports Will H. Hays, chairman of the Indiana Republican Central Committee, is slated to become national chairman to succeed W. R. Willcox of New York, who is expected to resign soon.
Charles W. Weimer, about 45, died at his Peru home. He formerly worked at the old Economy in the city and in recent years was a traveling salesman.

He was born August 13 1835 in Morrow County Ohio and lived in Union Township near Nappanee. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 5 p.m. at his late home 308 North Main Street with burial at Ok Ridge. survivors include wife two daughters Flora Walker Chicago and Mrs Walter C Niles South Bend and two grandchildren.

Fire at the Jacob Shelmadine livery barn in Bristol around four o'clock ruined the building. The cause is unknown, but residents helped save all horses and rigs. Loss about $3,000 with $1,000 insurance on structure and $1,000 on contents.
Eddie Eckert a 25 year old Barnum Bailey clown was killed in Kansas City Missouri An unknown assailant dragged him from a rear seat of a car placed him on a curb and shot him in the head according to police reports
Considerable milk was lost at noon when a wagon went into a ditch on the East Lincoln avenue road near Schrock's corners. Local farmers reported the spill and two nearby horses were unharmed. No injuries were reported and the milk was to be salvaged if possible.
The First English Lutheran church congregation gifted Christmas presents a floor lamp to Rev John H. Keeley, their pastor, as a token of appreciation.

Co. distributed $4.12 government stamps per worker, worth about $5 in 1923, IXL Fur. Co. paid $2. Hawks Fur. Co. contributed, while Goshen Milling Co. provided flour and Novelty & Brush Co. supplied hams to staff.
Leon Baumgartner, 14, of Fort Wayne, is under arrest in Elkhart on charges of stealing a Ford auto. Harold Morgan, 14, also of Fort Wayne and wanted in connection with the theft, escaped. The boys drove the stolen car from Fort Wayne to Elkhart and stored it. Baumgartner was taken to Fort Wayne. He has a bad record.
B. and O. railroad detective Walter Starrett was shot and killed in Mitchell by lumber mill employee David Landreth as Landreth crossed B and O yards to fetch medicine for a sick child. Starrett fired first, Landreth returned fire and killed him.
A benefit contest is set for this evening at McNeughton hall featuring the High School basketball team against an alumni quintet. Proceeds go to the Red Cross, and the event highlights local athletic talent for a charitable cause.

The twenty four year old son of Mr. and Mrs. J. I. Mack of 681 North Fifth street enlisted in the U S Navy in Dec 1935. More than four months passed with no word to Goshen relatives. Born Sept 27 1898, he started as a messenger boy for Western Union in Goshen, later becoming an operator in Chicago and other places, and served as a railroad telegraph operator. Last letter to his mother said he was aboard a battleship at Norfolk Virginia.
About 100 couples attended a formal Christmas dance in Moose hall under Delta Sigma Upsilon. Ike Fischer University of Michigan orchestra provided music. Out-of-town guests included Mr. and Mrs. Fred Naylor of Rockford and many others from Gary Chicago Detroit and more. Also announced is the engagement of Miss Ruby Moody of Birmingham Alabama to Carlisle W. Whitehead of South Bend. The Thoburn Missionary society will meet December 27 at 3 PM with a Christmas program. Forty-five guests enjoyed a Christmas dinner hosted by Mr. and Mrs. O. J. Marty nine miles east of Goshen, gifts adorn the Christmas tree.
The first midnight service in connection with Christmas ever given in Goshen was held at St James Episcopal church starting at 11:30 Monday night. Attendance was very large. The program included special music and did not conclude until 1:30 Tuesday morning.
A son, Ray A. Randall Jr., born to Mr. and Mrs. Ray A. Randall of Union City Midh, with Mr. Randall noted as a former Goshen resident. A son also born to Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Staley residing near New Paris.
George and Arthur Butler of South Bend brothers are in Epworth hospital suffering from gas exposure. They were found in bed with gas escaping from a small stove in the room in Epworth.

In South Bend police arrest Steven Baldiszar after coroner Dr. T J Swantz links the 35 year old Alexander Czinke death to a skull fracture and brain hemorrhage not from a fall. Baldiszar faces a manslaughter charge. another arrest is expected.
Funeral services for John W. Weaver will be held tomorrow at 10 o'clock at the Mennonite church in Middlebury. He was killed early Monday when struck by a fast westbound express train at the East Lincoln Avenue crossing of the New York Central line.
A Madison Indiana county farmer seeks exemption from military service on agricultural grounds. He testified on the questionnaire that he could be of greater service to the country by raising 100 bushels of corn per acre than by going into battle.

Fire damaged an Elkhart dwelling owned by Mrs. L. R. Beam and occupied by F. L. Kelsey. Loss estimated at 450 dollars. Blaze traced to a defective flue.
Thieves tried to break into Robbins Wholesale Candy Co. and Calvert and Krau Coal Co. in Elkhart last night but were unsuccessful. No injuries reported and no arrests noted.
