Witnesses for the defense at the Herrin mine murder trial accuse armed guards of terrorizing the countryside and aiding a riot. They describe crowds of up to 500 men, threats to a local farmer, and shots near the Lester mine as the case proceeds into January.
The annual farmers institute will be held in the Chamber of Commerce rooms Friday January 26. G C Zollinger of Clinton township serves as chairman. Special instructors include Y P Prigg of Middletown and Mrs Elizabeth C Stanley of Liberty. Stanley is noted for chautauqua work and leads the state W C T U. The program will be issued soon.
Esther Culp files in circuit court for separation from Oscar K. Culp after a 1907 marriage. She seeks custody of six children Mervin Harold Maynard Norman Marie and Ray and alimony of 1500 plus 600 yearly for child support. She alleges cruel treatment and neglect while he gambled and drank away property and hid from home duties.
Weather bureau predicts a fresh snow layer from Michigan to the Atlantic coast within 24 hours. Mild temperatures continue for the next two days with no cold snap until Wednesday, delaying snow-dependent Christmas gifts.
Charles Liederer states he has no matrimonial plans despite reports of importing a bride from Germany. A German woman en route to Goshen to work as housekeeper has been keeping house for his brother in Germany. Mrs. Liederer died in Goshen hospital on September 1.
A soldiers' bonus bill will be introduced when the Indiana legislature opens January 4. The measure was submitted to Old Bill on Post, Veterans of the World War, of this city. The post will elect officers next Thursday with T. J. Carlin C. W. Pickering and Dr. Rantz Snoberger elected as new members.
The body of Charles W. Miller who died in Summerville North Carolina on December 18 arrives in Goshen this noon. Funeral services are set for tomorrow at 2 PM from the Methodist church Benton with Rev Adams officiating. Burial will be in Solomon Creek cemetery.
Goshen to observe a general business suspension next Monday with public offices banks libraries and most retail establishments closed. The Daily Democrat will not publish barber shops close Saturday night reopen Tuesday morning post office open until 10 am with rural and one city delivery.
The $10,000 five per cent bond issue for improving George A Crume road in Concord township was sold to City National Bank for par plus accrued interest and a premium of 166.50. Five bidders battled including Merchants National Bank Muncie Spahn Medical Co John C Bontrager Elkhart and Thomas D Sheerin Co Indianapolis with varying premiums.
Miss Florence Stephenson daughter of Mr and Mrs W L Stephenson and teacher Miss Grace Arbogast of Elkhart performed for the children at the Orphans home in Mishawaka yesterday afternoon bringing entertainment and delight to the residents.
Mer Rouge Louisiana December 23 The mutilated bodies of Watt Daniels and Thomas Richards from Lake La Fourche are being identified with belts and clothing fragments. An autopsy by two New Orleans pathologists will determine if they were killed before being dumped in the lake. A heavy guard will protect the bodies during the autopsy and inquest as authorities prepare for arrests in Morehouse parish and Mer Rouge.
Detroit December 23. Mrs May B Ford released on 15000 bond after arrest for allegedly trying to hire a gunman to kill her husband N J Ford a Dearborn farmer. She was in a nervous condition and collapsed when the judge announced her release.
A. D. Straw of Goshen Auto and Electric announced the Overland contest winners this afternoon. Paul Reith of 217 North Third Street wins $5, followed by Clara Whirledge of R. R. 8 and Verna Amsden of 105 Olive Street among the prize recipients.

He said he was not consulted as a member of Hays committee on public relations and charged that financial interests may have influenced the decision.
Seventy five New York Central shop foremen and department heads in Elkhart received Christmas checks ranging from 500 to 1200 dollars for 1922 service. The total in Elkhart was about 50 thousand dollars, part of roughly 80 thousand distributed to 300 employees across the fourth district. No local office staff received checks.

Mishawaka police raided the Lincoln club arresting thirteen men including proprietor Louis Schnall. Police seized a crap table roulette wheel chips dice and gambling paraphernalia. Schnall posted 1000 bond others 25. Money found on the craps table. Trials set for Wednesday.
The Goshen Ministerial association outlines a city week of prayer from January 7 to 13 organized by the Federal Council of Churches of Christ in America. Union meetings will be held in various churches with details to follow. gatherings are planned for each evening of the week.
