The transport George Washington docked in New York City today bringing home 331 officers and 3551 enlisted men from Brest. The ship departed December 15 carrying units including the 139th, 137th, and 138th Field Artillery and various headquarters detachments. Of the 968 sick and wounded aboard 75 were bed-ridden and 33 had mumps. no deaths occurred during the voyage.
Secretary Baker urged Congress in a letter to grant the permanent rank of general to John J. Pershing commander in France Peston C. March and Tasker H. Bliss military representative at the supreme war council The move was sent to Chairman Dent of the house military committee.
Washington December 23 The Senate votes 38 to 32 to strike the 20 percent tax on luxuries from the war revenue bill amid disputes over its revenue impact. The luxury tax had been projected to raise about 185 million dollars and sparked sharp debate.
The 35th and 84th divisions of the American expeditionary forces were stationed at Le Mans on November 28, with no regularly detailed commanders assigned. A separate note mentions a unique Christmas card from James A. Arthur of Los Angeles, with a playful message and a Christmas appeal.
Zurich dec reports state Field Marshal von Hindenburg has a large German force in Posen, a area claimed by Polish nationalists as part of Poland. Berlin reports say Poland ordered elections in parts of Posen while Danzig remains occupied by Polish troops.
Basel Dec 23 It is reported here that Great Britain has informed Holland of its plan to send supplies to the British army of occupation in Germany via the Scheldt River and Dutch liberty ships.
Berlin reports that officials deny the German government has continued to address notes exclusively to the United States.
Charles Morrice of Detroit received a telegram confirming his brother Detective Robert Morrice was fired upon four times while helping arrest several bandits. The six captured highwaymen have identified the seventh escapee, and police expect custody soon.
Mrs Catherine Strycker died yesterday morning at her home four and one half miles west of New Paris from heart ailment after a one week illness. Survived by six sons Christian Samuel Noah of New Paris Jacob of North Liberty Solomon of Plymouth Peter of Goshen. two daughters Mrs Jerome Stroup of Goshen and Mrs Witton Knapp of Lakeville. brother Abraham Gingerich of Middlebury and others. Funeral services set for tomorrow at 2 at Thion Center church.
Judge Drake will adjourn the circuit court tomorrow to Thursday Jan 2 1919 when the petit jury reports. The first trial is state vs Theodore Herring of Wakarusa for assault on Stanford Willard a Wakara sa banker on the public square after a Red Cross dispute. The grand jury has not been called.
Hog feeders in several Indiana counties face corn shortages for fall due to last June frost and July August droughts. The shortage is not statewide, with supply arranged by central and southern farmers under plans led by J. R. Cavanaugh of the Purdue University division of markets.
D. R. Beckwith aged 58 collapsed with heart trouble while riding on a truck delivering goods from a hardware store in Niles. He died before aid could arrive. Survived by his wife who was shopping in South Bend at the time of his death and four children.
Mrs Goldie Lucille Brakes Burr 22 wife of Lieut Horace Burr U S A of Goshen stationed at Camp Dodge Des Moines Ia died at Mercer hospital Des Moines at 6 o clock Sunday morning after a week illness of pneumonia which followed premature childbirth a daughter was born The body arrived here with husband and parents and burial is in Oak Ridge cemetery Funeral is Thursday at 1050 a m Rev EL Vannuys officiating Surviving are husband one daughter her parents and one sister Mrs John Floyd Wean of this city Born Goshen May 15 1806 married Plymouth Ind May 22 1916
Chester L. Brown a 45 year old former traveling salesman for a casket firm who had recently moved to Fort Wayne with his wife Bessie Henkel was found dead in an open ditch. A post mortem confirmed he ended his life by ingesting carbolic acid. He had resigned from his job due to ill health and lived with his in laws.
Alvin Willis of Berrien Springs Michigan died from injuries after an interurban car struck his automobile near Niles Michigan. The late conductor of bands at Niles Arden Hinchman and Buchanan had skull fractures and internal injuries. His wife reached his bedside shortly before his death.
William B. Hile of Filkhart, set to take the Elkhart superior court bench on January 1, 1919 for a four year term, appoints William Dwight as bailiff succeeding W J Stamp who held the post since the court’s founding. Dwight has been Elkhart police chief and held various local law enforcement roles. Hile also says he will retain Frank Barcum as official court reporter. Barcum has served since Leo Fox retired.
Charles R Parker remains out after a siege with the flu while Marie Dandy is confined at home. Mrs Chas Rohrer and son Wallace of New Paris recover from influenza as do Elizabeth and Grace Rockwell. Letter Carrier Jacob Dembufsky sick, hospitalized at Goshen for bowel surgery. First Brethren Church children urged to attend practice at 2 PM Tuesday.
A man killed his wife following a protracted quarrel while their three sons slept through the horror. Police reports describe the fatal assault and ensuing investigation as a bleak family tragedy.
In Fond du Lac Wisconsin Lewis David Cost of Goshen killed his wife Jessie Place Cost and wounded himself. Their son Harold, 12, was the first in the room and remains at the hospital as authorities plan to file murder charges. The body was sent to Goshen with undertaker Elmer Culp.
A terse notice notes that the Democrat will not be sued on Wednesday December 25 marking Christmas.
The Nappanee News recalls Elkhart county fairs past, noting ticket prices of one dollar for four days at the 47th annual fair in Goshen next September. Families once bought red cardboard family tickets the size of ten dollars, with wagons at gates and children on boat seats watching the crowd.

Dr George Grogs a Roann Indiana veterinary surgeon and former Army veterinary corps lieutenant escaped a Fort Wayne sanitarium. His body was found hanging in a sheep shed on John Reicher’s farm five miles from Roann. He left a widow his parents survive.
Last Saturday night at McNaughton Hall the Goshen basketball team lost 1 to 21 to Misha waka. After a 10 to 3 halftime deficit the locals tied and led briefly in the second half before Munsey scored a late three for the visitors. Goshen's second team beat Bristol 16 to Th.

Ernst Winterhoff Jr five weeks old son of Mr and Mrs Ernest Winterhoff of Chicago formerly of Elkhart died in Chicago The brief notice records the infant’s death and family origin without further details.
The regular Moose lodge meeting is rescheduled to Thursday evening, Dec 26, instead of Friday night because of the Christmas dance. Lee Higgins of Elkhart, a New York Central freight brakeman, fell 16 feet from a Laporte trestle on Dec 1, fracturing a vertebra and leaving Holy Family hospital for home care.
National headquarters reported about 13 million enrolled in the Christmas Red Cross roll call with final totals likely to match last year’s 22 million. Influenza and bad weather slowed progress though the central division led with about four million enrollments. Goshen district expected 9,000 members, while Goshen chapter shows around 2,200.
Francis Henry Barron 80 died at Goshen hospital this morning after an abscess on his right hand led to amputation. A Civil War veteran, he had lived in Goshen 35 years after moving from Pennsylvania. Survived by wife Mary F and six grandchildren. funeral at 108 Wilsai Avenue Thursday at 2 pm with burial announced.
A state board of charities inspection tour visited the Julia E Work Training School for Boys and Girls. The committee has not finished its work and reported no specific complaints. The visit focused on inspection. past orphanages in Mishawaka and Laporte were noted.

Funeral Tuesday with Milford burial. Joseph F Monschein 34 Elkhart died after ten days influenza. Survived by wife father three brothers four sisters. Hazel Kindig 24 Jamestown died of influenza after giving birth to a daughter. Survived by husband mother six sisters.
Elkhart banks have arranged to close at 8 p.m. daily, extending their hours beyond the typical 3 p.m. closing time. Community officials note the move aims to serve customers with after-work access.

Leon L. Hart aged 38, a Laporte area gardener, died at his home from influenza. The obituary notes his expertise in horticulture and his residence in Laporte.
