President Wilson spoke in Paris to a great ovation at the city hall addressing French greetings. He said the United States had not viewed the French sufferings with ordinary sympathy and that his authority comes from the people of the United States, reaffirming U S sympathy with the Allies in World War I.
Washington dispatches say officials attach little significance to diplomatic exchanges after the Tampico incident on November 2 in which an American destroyer crew member killed a Mexican guard captain and wounded another Mexican soldier. Reports stress self defense and restrained reaction.
William Hohenzollern, the former ruler, has refused to leave Holland after authorities warned that his continued presence could cause serious difficulties for the country. An official representation urged his departure to avert further trouble.
The liner Levitihan, previously the Vaterland, docked in New York today after surviving five submarine attacks while transporting American troops to France. The ship carried U S forces and had faced numerous submarines en route.
Dr. G Keehn of Ligonier traveled to Cromwell on Red Cross business. One wheel caught in a railroad track as a fast train neared. He leapt to safety unhurt, but the car suffered heavy damage.
Mrs. Cora A. Kenrich aged 46 died at her home in Grand Rapids Texas. Her husband G. Kenrich died seven months earlier. She is survived by her mother Mrs A J Caton of Rocky Ford Colorado a sister Mrs Laura E Neff of Rocky Ford and a brother John A Caton of Goshen. She lived in Goshen for 30 years.
Mrs. Helen G. Turner formerly Miss Baker of Elkhart died at her Cincinnati home of influenza pneumonia. Her husband Arthur Turner is very ill. She was sister to Joseph Baker an Elkhart druggist. The body will be interred in Elkhart.
Paris dispatch says President Wilson will greet American troops and spend Christmas Day with them at Treves. He and Premier Clemenceau discussed the coming peace conference and the president was impressed by Clemenceau's personality.
Postmaster General Burleson announced long distance and toll rate cuts in a basic charge of six and one fourth mills a mile with airline mileage. Night service is half the day rate until midnight and one fourth after. the changes take effect January 21.
In Indianapolis the third annual meeting of the Indiana Conference on Mental Health opens today. Three sessions are planned and a number of prominent speakers and specialists will address organization members.
Hamburg sailors council demands control of the merchant marine and warns it will sink all ships if no action is taken. Berlin dispatch to a newspaper reports the threat and cites the council’s stance.
Rome report states that during the war 15 600 officers of the Italian army were killed and more than 30 000 officers were seriously wounded, per the minister of war today.
Washington reports the War Department announced the sailing of four more transports from France returning American troops.
Amsterdam dispatch reports that Poland has severed relations with Germany. The telegram from Warsaw confirms the action on December 16 and marks a diplomatic break between the two nations.
Arthur Ernest shows marked improvement from influenza. J. W. Morrice remains ill with influenza. Mrs Burt Landaw and her daughter on North Eighth street also ill. Mrs Ed O Connor and daughter Helen, and Mrs W A Moxtey and her son, are reported influenza patients.
Three alleged bootleggers J. D. Mc Carthy of Sinclair at Elkhart George Martin New York Central worker at Elkhart and Fred Eddy local resident are under arrest in Elkhart. They will be arraigned this afternoon.
Willard L. Stephenson purchases two saddle horses from Sears Gardner, one for Mrs. Stephenson and one for himself. Gardner bought the horses in Michigan, with several Gosh en residents negotiating for riding stock.
Over the past three years the firm has shipped more than 12 000 packages by parcel post with loss of only one. It has built a large mail order business growing rapidly.
Funeral services for Mrs. Arthur Ernest were conducted this afternoon at the Waterford M E church with burial in Violet Cemetery. Friends gathered at the Dunlaps home at 1 30 o clock for the procession.
Caleb Zook of Warsaw was taken to the soldiers home at Marion.
Goshen council meets this evening with Anthony Deahl of the Chicago South Bend and Northern Indiana Railway Co to discuss abandoning Goshen city street car service. The company seeks to remove tracks on Lincoln avenue and Eighth street, while a compromise proposes one car run from Goshen college to the west city limits daily.
The December term of the Elkhart circuit court began with Judge Drake presiding and about 10 cases on the docket. The six week session adjourns January 25. In Superior Court the New York Central seeks 3800 dollars from Byron C. Godfrey and C. Godfrey & Sons for coal misdelivered and used. The will of William Barger is filed for probate with Carrie M. Barger named as widow and life tenant of Elkhart property for six children Olinea Belle Herrick Laura Etta Cook Clementine Earle Franklin Barger James H. Barger and William Barger of Cleveland.
Indiana reports a broad drop in influenza with 1,142 cases across 32 counties, led by Henry County. Last week added 11,738 new cases, totaling 112,444 since Oct. 8, excluding Marion County and Fort Harrison.
Police suspect that John Ward and J. McCumber are the same man after changes given on two checks. An Elkhart Baking Co check for 15.65 to a stranger and a Schwartz & Potts grocer check for 10.40 to Ward were exchanged for cash after small grocery purchases.
Police seized six quarts of whiskey found in rooms occupied by Orris Robinson in Elkhart. Robinson, a cook employed at McCarthy's Little Casino restaurant, posted bonds of $500. The Philomathian Club will meet tonight with Mrs. F. E. O. Hawks.
The local Red Cross chapter begins its annual campaign throughout Goshen this week. Two corps of solicitors operate in each of five wards canvassing every home and business for $1 memberships, with a reminder to wear the Red Cross button to avoid solicitation hold ups.
Rudolph H. Horst managing editor of the South Bend Tribune was offered the secretaryship to Congressman elect Andrew J. Hickey of LaPorte as recognition of his campaign work. Horst, ill with influenza, was unavailable but friends expect he will decline. the post pays 2500 a year.
The county board awarded 1919 printing contracts to News Printing Co. of Goshen for class one, Goshen Democrat for classes two and four, and Fred S. Timmins of Elkhart for class three.
William G. Barker of Indianapolis married Hazel White at age 17 on Sept. 21, 1914. They separated Jan. 1, 1915 and Barker moved to Jeffersonville. He later learned his wife was alive and wed again. Barker’s first wife filed for divorce in Indianapolis. she did not appear at trial, and the judge annulled the marriage at Barker’s request.
Toledo promotes a project to create a deep waterway from Toledo to Chicago via Fort Wayne. Michigan City has just completed an organizational step. A Defiance Ohio meeting set for January 30 was postponed to January 6 due to illness of Albert Krell of Cincinnati who is an influenza patient.

Mrs. H. B. Merrill of South Bend gave formaldehyde by mistake for cough syrup to her infant. The child died in Michigan City.
In the circuit court here recently Lawrence Ernest of Nappanee filed suit for divorce, not Arthur Ernest as was published. This clarifies the plaintiff's correct name in the action.
