AP dispatch from Halifax reports 2000 dead and 2000 injured after the harbor blast blamed on a French munitions ship rammed by a Belgian relief boat. Explosions occurred 23 minutes after collision as fires and panic spread through the city. observers saw children burn and residents flee in inadequate clothing.
Halifax, Dec 7 reports say more than 2000 people died when a Belgian relief steamship collided with a French munitions ship causing a massive explosion. Snow hindered relief efforts but aided fire crews. Doctors nurses and trains with medical and food supplies arrived. sailors from an American warship assisted in rescue operations.
Co. R. Stuart, a bartender at the Hille saloon in Elkhart, was arrested this morning on a charge of stealing $350 from Mr. Hille. Stuart was about to depart for Chicago when arrested.
Frank Toney 56 of South Gend was killed at Niles when a windlass handle used to raise railroad cars struck him on the head. His wife and four children survive.
The American sanitary section No 5 becomes the first U S unit in France to earn the fourragere, a French cross of war decoration worn on the shoulder. Headquarters announced the award noting two prior citations and a general order from General Petain praising splendid conduct before the enemy.
Austro German forces in eastern Trentino press to open passes toward the Italian plains. Berlin reports 5000 more Italians captured, totaling 15000 prisoners in a few days as Italian lines claim to hold.
Undated report from Jassey says Roumanian troops have decided to join Russians for an armistice with the Germans. All overtures for fraternization have been rejected. Hostilities are reported as suspended along the entire Russian front.
The Pravda prints the armistice agreement between the 67th Russian Infantry division and the 31st German Infantry division. It specifies no transfer of German troops to other fronts.
American army airmen fighting German planes on the west front have reported their first casualties. Two men, a corporal and a private, were listed as injured. Neither serviceman is from Indiana.

Funeral rites for Ethan Allen Hahn were conducted this afternoon from the residence of his daughter Mrs. John Basher west of Goshen. Interment was made in Oak Ridge cemetery.
A Milford resident wrote to the Mail detailing that a can she bought from a Milford dealer contained pulverized glass, prompting concern over product safety and quality.
Crystal Springs Creamery Co will start a cream station at New Paris on Monday receiving cream twice weekly each week on Mondays and Thursdays.
Mrs. Elwood Starbuck spoke at a meeting of the Woman's Missionary Society of the Methodist Church held in Mishawaka. The event focused on mission work and church activities in the community.

In Washington on December 7 the declaration of war on Austria-Hungary was debated in both houses. The House heard the foreign affairs committee's war resolution, expected to pass before night. The Senate foreign relations committee also reported a war resolution urging immediate consideration.
Daniel J. Troyer, who becomes mayor on January 7 1958, has announced committee appointments. The water works and light committee names John M. Yoder as chairman with Nathan W. Manrow and A G Hoovens. the group will select a superintendent for the plant. The body of Dr. Robert Schrock of Lagrange, killed at Richmond Indiana while alighting from a G. R. I train, was interred in Lagrange yesterday. Dr. W. H. Schrock, his father, received the remains at Richmond. Carrier Bros. advertise automobile heaters and Ford cars. New Paris dealer.
Elkhart native and Goshen resident Robert Bittle, 31, drafted from Elkhart County’s No. 2 draft division, trains at Camp Shelby Mississippi with Company D 113th Engineers. He formerly lived at Wilden Avenue North Side Goshen and North Webster, worked at Hotel Hascall Goshen hospital and C J Castetter Co, married with one son, and previously led barns for the unit at Hattiesburg assignment.
Landowners on both sides of Solomon's Creek Road near Rookstool's corner southeast of Benton donate ten feet on each side for widening as Indiana's highway plans call for brick paving next summer. The state highway chief engineer visits Washington to decide highway matters while Haines Egbert notes progress toward extending the Lincoln highway from Benton toward the Noble county line to connect with a brick road into Ligonier.
Mrs. Joseph Yenn 76 native of Alsace Lorraine died at her Mishawaka home. Surviving seven children includes Rev Fr S Yenn of Fort Wayne formerly priest at St John’s Goshen. Mrs Nancy Ketring 75 of Syracuse died last night at her home from pneumonia after a week illness. She was widowed from Edmund A Ketring and survived by two sons Willard and Clarence E Ketring and brother Aaron Dickson of Mishawaka. Funeral at 2 PM Sunday from the residence with interment in Syracuse.
Mr and Mrs Willis Reed of Nappa nee are the parents of a son. Mr and Mrs Samuel Wisler of three miles north of Nappanee are the parents of a daughter.
William Hindman a 70 year old South Bend jeweler is under arrest on five counts of assaulting girls under 16 years of age.

Henry R. Juday age 72 died at his son’s home 211 East Douglas Street Goshen this noon due to age related ailments. Survived by two daughters Mrs. Charles Devault and Mrs. John Meyers of Syracuse and six sons David Elkhart Sylvester Charles Harry Jesse Harry and R E Juday all of Goshen. Funeral plans will be announced later.
Charles Wredingburgh, who had recently resigned from the Goshen police force to work as a meat cutter in Elkhart, is again covering his patrol duties.
