Washington reports the Public Health Service estimates between 300 000 and 350 000 civilian deaths from influenza and pneumonia since Sept 15, based on city and state records. Officials say the epidemic persists with fewer deaths but a new sporadic recrudescence nationwide.
A jury in St. Joseph circuit court South Bend acquitted taxi driver Frank Banstead of manslaughter in the death of Edna McPann after a three day trial. The original murder charge was quashed on defense motion. The jury retired at 4 pm and returned a sealed verdict at 9:40 pm.
Three Western Union telegram messengers were arrested in Indianapolis by agents of the Bureau of Investigation, charged with destroying government telegrams that carried death and wound reports of Indianapolis soldiers. A 14 year old boy allegedly turned up five messages marked Government message Rush.
Dogs attacked a flock owned by James Hilbish north of Goshen, killing two and maiming two. The incident caused great fright and Township Trustee Kinney delivered a $50 damages adjustment today.

Mrs Mary Douma age 33 wife of William Douma died last evening at her home southeast of New Paris of influenza. Survived by husband two sons Flynn eight and John three her mother Mix Paul Darkwood Milford three sisters Mrs Herman Heber Canada Mrs Walter Van Diepenbos Milford and Mrs Albert Fisher New Paris five brothers James and Merrill Darkwood Idaho Irvin New Paris William Detroit and Albert with American forces in France. Funeral Sunday afternoon at the home with burial in Maple Grove cemetery.
Mrs Edward Black 30 of North Webster Indiana died at 2 this morning of pneumonia at her sister Mrs Arthur Stevens home north of Middlebury where she had been visiting. Survived by husband two sisters Mrs Stevens and Mrs Myron Ford of South Bend previously of Middlebury two brothers James Hall of Angola and George Hall of Kendallville and half brother Dr E P R Hall of Portland Indiana.
In Indianapolis on December 6, the final act in election fraud cases involving Joseph E. Pell and 37 defendants was the quashing of indictments in federal court on a motion by U S district attorney L Ert Slack.
Fred A. Hausheer former auditor of Laporte county is short 1833 dollars according to charges by Indiana state board of accounts field examiners. A demand has been made for him to reimburse the county.
Edward Baer of Fort Wayne, a Wabash railroad painter, died on a Wabash passenger train while being taken from Montpelier, Ohio, to a hospital in Fort Wayne after being hurt when he jumped from a motor car near the site of the injury.
Dr. Martin K. Kreider, Go shen physician, escaped serious injury when his car was struck by a New York Central locomotive and freight cars at the Cottage Avenue crossing. The impact occurred as he returned from Elkhart, en route to George Trump’s home, where a son was born hours later. An eyewitness from the Chicago South Bend & Northern Indiana Railway company confirmed no warning signal was given.
In four damage suits totaling $11,500, John Miller a Brazilian gypsy sues Chicago Lake Shore and South Bend by Co. after an interurban car struck his automobile at a New Carlisle crossing. Circuit court at South Bend awards $500 total to Miller. Lawsuits sought $10,000 for John Miller’s death, $1,000 for Dina Miller’s death, and $500 for Spiro Miller’s injuries.

Mrs. Mary Shanks, 59, died of apoplexy in Mishawaka where she had lived 18 years. Charles Reiher, 57, died of pneumonia at his Michigan City home.

He said William Bayard Hale was on Hearst payroll and paid by a German propaganda group to travel to Roumania and press Berlin’s case for U.S. entry. He noted a 1915 cable urging a journalist to Berlin as favorable timing.
