The Indiana ship canal project is killed before congress convenes. The committee in charge of the apportions bill will not hold hearings or consider the project and Indiana is largely ignored in the river and harbor bill. Indiana may receive only $22,000, with Michigan City harbor favored.

Early this morning at about 1 30 o clock a fire gutted Hotel Kelly in Waterloo Indiana formerly the Locke hotel owned by Ab Kelly a DeKalb county politician. The frame structure with 40 rooms burned with an estimated loss of 5000 and the blaze briefly threatened the business district. Police and railway service were disrupted as hoses blocked lines and operators fled.

An 1870 statement issued by Col. A. M. Tucker lists expenditures for the second court house then under construction in Elkhart County. It itemizes costs to date, amounts due on contracts, and estimated balance, totaling 108 479 12, with multiple contractors and officials certifying each department’s correctness. The document, found among old papers, will be given to the county historical society.

Chauncy Garver of Elkhart is jailed on larceny charges after a money sack from the C B and N I Barn was found $15.45 short. Thomas Margason is also under arrest on larceny charges but free on bail. Albert Hershberger, a conductor, reported the loss and named Garver as likely thief. The company had previously discharged Garver after a separate robbery incident.
More than 400 hogs have perished with over 100 confirmed dead in Kosciusko County near Leburg due to a hog cholera outbreak. Farmers express alarm as losses mount and officials warn of further spread.
Several defendants from Indiana faced federal charges in Indianapolis. Eugene Harley of Leesburg pleaded guilty to mailing promotional circulars for a prize scheme and was fined 59 dollars plus costs. Charles W. Peters of South Bend admitted a false story about a match in a five dollar bill and received suspended sentence after pleading guilty to currency laws. Lucian W. Brown of Elkhart was fined 50 dollars and given 90 days to pay, with witnesses ready to testify. Charles Craik Mackie of Warsaw pleaded guilty to stealing registered letters and received suspended sentence. Phila Wolf of Waterloo was fined 25 dollars and costs for obscene postcards. a later judge reduced it to 19 dollars and costs after explanation.
Gov. Marshall announced James H. Fry of Fort Wayne as chief oil inspector succeeding Sid Conger. Fry, a Democrat with 28 years at the Pennsylvania railway offices, will fill 33 deputy positions. Fleming of Fort Wayne recommended Fry.
An $8,000 estate of Emma Estelle Lord, once thought to have no heirs, is claimed by a daughter, Mattie Eatelle Commons of Muncie. A photo traced to Janet Hoover linked to a prior marriage and child, with Lord’s widowhood and suicide surrounding Culver, Indiana, are noted in the filing.
