A Sunday start for gasoline conservation is announced with individuals urged to self-regulate. An American auto user is to be placed on his honor system, relying on personal responsibility and voluntary compliance.
Washington reports on the fuel administration request for Sunday automobile abstinence to conserve gasoline. The agency leaves definition to individuals and says it will not tabulate traffic, aiming to build reserves for overseas shipments. The move is expected to be observed nationwide with uncertain savings estimates.
Chicago announces a new aerial mail service between New York and Chicago starting September 5. The first flight will depart Belmont Park in the morning, reach Grant Park in the afternoon, with stops at Cleveland and Bryant. One aircraft will use a liberty motor and the route will omit 250 miles, with expected overflight of Goshen.
Leland Rober 24 a recent groom from north of Nappanee told the Kosciusko county draft board at Warsaw he is a conscientious objector and refuses to report to Camp Custer Battle Creek Mich for training. Officers found him in a field and he chose to go as a contingent draftee rather than a deserter. His request for deferment on agricultural showing was denied.
Many Goshen business houses will observe Labor Day next Monday. All public offices and the banks will be closed for the day. The post office will operate on a holiday schedule. Democrats will not be issued on Monday.
Fred C. Einsievel was arrested in Fort Wayne for speeding while riding a four cylinder Henderson motorcycle. He paid the fine in Justice Freyberger's court the following morning.
At Camp Zachary Taylor the 8 year gap between West Point graduates and field artillery officers ended as more than 2 500 trainees were commissionedincluding 35 African Americans the first of their race to be promoted at the school.
Safe Sloan, 50, of Syracuse unmarried and employed at Sandusky Portland Cement Co. in Syracuse, was injured unloading coal when his left foot was mangled by a screw conveyor. He was taken to Goshen hospital by ambulance. condition reported satisfactory.
Elkhart County's quota for the Fourth Liberty Loan will be about 2,000,000, County Chairman Deahl said. The campaign starts September 28 and will be short. full subscription expected within a few days. Deahl and assistants outline the campaign plan for announcement soon.

At the Sept 28 opening, a resolution by Joseph G Ibach was ratified to mobilize county and township councils and all patriotic groups. They are asked to assist Liberty loan chairmen statewide to ensure concerted effort and harmony for a strong fundraising drive.
Secretary of War Baker and Provost Marshal General Crowder announced a compensation scale for local and district draft board members. Pay ranges from 50 dollars a month for districts with 1000 or fewer registrants to 200 dollars a month for districts with 6000 or more registrants. They said pay is a minor consideration and does not equal the value of patriotic service in running the draft.
William E Bradway wealthy clubman died at a Chicago hospital after a Thursday night shooting near his home. Police say he named a traveling salesman as his attacker before losing consciousness. He was divorced from Charlotte Mae Smith, daughter of J W Smith, discoverer of Goldfield.
A wounded prisoner encountered near the Ailette battlefield in France says he heard Americans murder prisoners but refuses to view that claim as true. He adds that a nation cannot be built on such deeds and doubts the accusation.

A Vincennes man purchased a blue button ball Wabash river pearl valued at 350, then sold by Bitterman Bros. jewelers in Evansville for 850. The pearl, described as a beauty, was taken from the Wabash river recently.
W B Pugh of Indianapolis was killed while fighting with Cenadlian forces in France. F Leeper of Indianapolis, a member of the Canadian forces, was wounded in action in northern France.
Andreas Katsimegas known as Jimmy the Greek of Goshen serves in Company H 300th Infantry American Expeditionary Forces and writes from France on July 28 stating he is in excellent health and enclosing a photograph. Katsimegas is among many Goshen Greeks serving the United States.
Middleton brothers Paul and Tom, nephews of Mrs. William Rowell of Goshen, have been serving in the U S Navy. In letters home they describe crossing the Atlantic by cargo steamer, being attacked by a German U-boat three days from a U S port, and the ship sinking a convoy member before heading to Boston. They witnessed scenes in French hospitals they will never forget.
Miss Fay Cullen an 18 year old of Mishawaka attempted suicide by swallowing iodine while walking with her lover George Cable near Union and Eighth streets. She was rushed to a physician and expected to recover. The couple had frequent quarrels and this was her second poisoning attempt after years ago taking carbolic acid.

The Elkhart lawyer Charles E. Frank died at his home on August 12. His 1915 will leaves a $30,000 estate to his wife Annetta Fieldhouse-Frank who is named executrix. She filed a $20,000 bond.
Mrs W D Starr wife of Rev W D Starr former pastor of the War saw Christian church died at her Indianapolis home at age 00 She is survived by her husband and one daughter.
A W. O. W. service flag bearing 33 stars was dedicated with formal ceremonies. Mrs. Arthur Weldy directed an exceptionally fine drill and attendance was excellent.
