German forces launch a counter attack in a sector near Arras as enemy troops resist at one location. Reports describe renewed pressure and limited gains amid ongoing fighting in the area.
Allied forces push toward Noyon as French claim capture, while British progress remains unconfirmed. North of Noyon little change. south of the Somme British efforts reported advancing though details are not official. East of Arras Germans launch heavy counterattacks repulsed by British officials.
R. Pharis of Purdue University assistant county demonstration agent will take the three Elkhart county five stock judging winners to the Indiana State Fair in Indianapolis. All expenses will be paid by the demonstration department. Winners announced tomorrow.
Mr and Mrs Julius Van Daele were arrested at Osceola by Assistant Chief A H Ross of Mishawaka for violating the prohibition law. Police seized two trunks of liquor containing 34 quarts each and four pasteboard cartons of liquor totaling about 25 gallons.
A Lake Superior Court petition for a receiver to close Northern State Bank was filed by E. Miles Norton for State Auditor Krauss. The hearing is scheduled for 9 o clock Saturday morning. Some Geshen residents hold deposits in the bank.
Milford factory shuts temporarily when head cutter becomes ill. Two women are laid off until operations resume, though the company says orders are rushing in.
Raleigh E. Chiddister, 20, a Noble county farmer, and Mise Vera Hite, 18, of Ligonier, were married.
Noyon fell this morning to the forces of Gen Humbert. General Mangin's troops crossed the Oise River and captured Morlincourt as part of the operation.
Paris Aug 29 German prisoners captured by the French west of the Chaulnes Noyon line have been few as French advance proceeds cautiously. German forces left mines at several sites and scattered infernal machines and traps of various kinds.
Elkhart division No. 1 prepares for the registration of men aged 18 to 45 under the amended conscription law. Registration is expected Saturday September 7. About 2,750 men will register according to Clerk factin. Division No. 2 estimates 4,600 men, a figure some consider at least 500 too high.
The department of labor reports that the buying power of one dollar has fallen to 54 cents in Washington and Baltimore, 57 cents in Philadelphia, 59 cents in New York and Chicago, and 63 cents in San Francisco when compared with five years ago, based on food price comparisons.
Baris August 29 dispatches report French troops at the gates of Ham as German forces retreat in disarray. German losses include three munition trains at Breuil, five miles west of Ham.
At 3 pm yesterday in Elkhart the car owned by B D Brown collided with an eastbound street car at N Second and Jefferson. Brown sustained head bruises and serious injuries. Mrs Brown and a son were bruised. two brothers were unhurt. Brown, manager of People's Clothing Store in Elkhart, was transported to a friend's home for treatment.

President Wilson sent to the Senate nominations for reappointment of the present postmasters at Wabash Indiana and Warsaw Indiana. Nearly 2 000 postmasters nationwide were named for reappointment with most incumbents to continue in office.
Washington August 29 board of railroad wages and working conditions recommended higher wages for track labor and for certain classes of clerks to Director General McAdoo.
The Bushnell-Patten Construction Co. of Elkhart has secured the $50,000 contract to erect the Young Women’s Christian Association building on W. Lexington Avenue. Construction begins immediately with the basement complete and materials arriving.
There will be no national drawing to assign order number for the twenty one year old men who registered Saturday and Monday under the selective service law.
Spaulding Home at Michigan City hosts Red Cross chapter headquarters. Mrs. Howard H. Spaulding, the state’s wealthiest woman, formerly Catherine Barker, and connected with Chicago, provides the residence.
An X ray expert from Chicago examined injuries of Mildred Trick and Dorothy Smith of Benton Harbor Michigan and George Pratt Jr and William Smith Jr of Elkhart in the Pratt auto wreck near Argos Indiana. Trick has two broken arms, Smith Jr one arm reset, Dorothy Smith improving at General hospital with recovery assured, Pratt in satisfactory condition.
Four year old Robert son of Mrs. Ida Wilson of Kankakee was bitten on the cheek by a Scotch collie at the home of George Fry near Columbia City. The dog was killed and its head sent to Pasteur Institute at Indianapolis. if rabies is confirmed the child will be treated at the institute in Fort Wayne Lutheran hospital.
Miss Margaret Wilson, after 29 years as a teacher at Elkhart High School, resigns to become superintendent of Middlebury schools. She served twice as president of the Elkhart Alumni and was widely regarded as a popular teacher in the city.
About 300 Liberty Loan workers from Elkhart and nearby counties attended a luncheon at the Oliver hotel in South Bend to plan the fourth Liberty Loan campaign, due to start September 28 and run three weeks. Will H. Wade opened remarks noting Indiana will subscribe its quota. B F Deahl chaired the Elkhart county group. Mrs Crean spoke for the state executive committee.
Complete tabulation shows 1140 men passed 21st birthday since June 5 registering for military service in Indiana. TAB through Maj. Robert C Balizell’s office lists 39235 white 131 colored and 86 aliens.
Belmont Method of Goshen drove Red Bingo to win the 2:30 pace at the Laporte county fair in La Porte. The purse was 300 dollars with eight starters and heats three through five completed. Leo Boy, owned by George Foster of Goshen, finished fourth. Foster plans to start Leo Boy at Wauseon next week.

Horton Dillingham age 82 of Warsaw died at Marion Soldiers home. His body was sent to Warsaw for burial with burial at Pleasant View Church three miles northwest of Warsaw.
Large attendance marks the double funeral for Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Artley, once of Goshen, who died when their buggy was struck near Vistula by a New York Central train. Rev. Harry Curtin Harman officiated at 1:30 pm services from their Goshen home. Marjorie Artley, five, survived with a sprained wrist after being thrown from the wreck.
Plans to combine the New York Central and Big Four passenger stations in Goshen are progressing with a definite decision expected in ten days to two weeks. Delays hindered a July 1 relocation to the Big Four crossing though consolidation would reduce ticket agents and unify freight offices for economy. For years talk has referenced a Goshen union station.
Hernan Heisel of Elkhart owner of a hundh room near the Big Four station is under arrest charged with refusing to serve food to a Negro patron. Elkhart's Negro population is growing and Heisel's hearing in city court is next Tuesday morning. He is supported by every restaurant owner in Elkhart.
Commander J A Bell retired in charge of recruiting in Indiana begins a state tour to inspect six sub stations. Evansville first visited, with Terre Haute Fort Wayne Richmond South Bend and Muncie to follow as enlistments reopen in the navy early next month.
A seven pound son was born to Mr and Mrs Clyde M Culp of Elgin UL formerly of Nappanee Mrs Culp is in Sherman hospital at Elgin. A son was born to Mr and Mrs An son Lutes of Nappanee. A daughter was born to Mr and Mrs Oren Cleveland living southeast of Nappanee. A daughter was born to Mr and Mrs Frank Reher of South Bend at the home of Mrs Reher parents Mr and Mrs W Johnson.
The seven months old son of George H. Trigg of Lansing Mich previously of Elkhart died in Lansing. The body was sent to Elkhart for burial.
Rev. Charles Bréam of Middlebury Lutheran Church enters YMCA work at Camp Oustér Miteh. This transition marks a notable shift as Bréam takes up youth program leadership and YMCA activities in the region.
Indiana Governor Jas P Goodrich, injured when his car collided with a street car in Indianapolis, rested comfortably by morning and doctors said injuries may be less severe than initial reports. He was taken to St Vincent’s hospital after the crash. an X-ray exam was planned.
Nicaragua and Honduras agreed to withdraw all troops from their border and submit the long standing boundary dispute to the United States through their ministers in Washington after a request from the United States.
Daniel J. Statsman aged 51 died at 4 pm after three years of paralysis and illness at his Chicago Avenue home West Side. He ran a grocery from his residence. Survived by wife Maude two sisters and one brother. Funeral private Friday 2 pm Oak Ridge Cemetery. Burial with Calanthe lodge No 41 K of P membership.
Washington Aug 29 Special: Private First Class George H Shively of the United States Ambulance service is named for bravery in France. During fighting near Soissons on July 21 1918 he drove through shell fire and continued after his car shattered delivering patients to a dressing station and fainted from wounds to his left arm and both legs. He denied the existence of his injuries while the ambulance was hit. He is son of the late U S Senator Shively of South Bend.
Mrs Anna Hochstettler aged 52 of six miles northwest of Nappanee died at Epworth hospital South Bend after an operation for strangulation of the bowels. Funeral services were conducted at the home by Revs Monroe Hochstettler and Eli Bontrager with burial in Burkholder cemetery. Her husband died six years ago. She leaves five sons and three daughters and was a member of the Amish Mennonite church of Agr.
Some orchards near South Bend will yield owners from 300 to 3850 dollars an acre. Judicious trimming and spraying at the right time have had their results.

St. Joseph county commissioners awarded the Union Street road contract south of Mishawaka to Reith & Riley Grishen. The project covers 11,000 square yards of gravel at 63 cents per yard, with a 4500 foot by 32 foot alignment. The road runs south from the Dodge Manufacturing factory, also called Bremen road, connecting to the Woodland route pike.
George Caranzo, described as a mysterious stranger, was arrested for begging on the streets of South Bend. He was fined five dollars plus costs and ordered to leave town. Authorities found money in a postal savings bank and four registered letters to Washington, two to the justice department and two to the interior department on his clothing.
