A horse and buggy owned by Otis High of Elk Hart disappeared from West Jackson Street hitch rack Saturday night. Westbound passenger train No 42 struck the buggy near the hump, wrecking the vehicle while the horse escaped unharmed.
Mrs Anan Miller fell down stairs at her home on Wilden Avenue yesterday and is suffering from a severely injured nose and other bruises.

He was 65, survived by wife and three children, and summered at Winona with a prominent local stake in the assembly. A bell tolled 65 times in Winona Lake following the news.
Chicago attorney Charles S. Jackson brother in law to Max Silver and Adolph Silver is sought in connection with a banking collapse. He was arrested at Lake Wawasee Indiana and questioned about whereabouts of Max and Adolph. Jackson allegedly used 19 disguises while staying at the resort before authorities traced him.
Mitchell Charnley, longtime Chicago svoshen resident and broker, lies seriously ill at Mercy Hospital. Doctors led by Dr Golden planned an enlargement of the prostate gland procedure after a week of illness, with Dr Becknell traveling from his home base to assist.

Miss Florence Schartzell, 19, long distance operator at the Home Telephone exchange, died at her Elk hart home of diphtheria after a week of illness. She attended Elkhart city schools and worked for the telephone company. Survived by mother, one sister, four brothers. Nine diphtheria cases in Elkhart and two in Goshen. Health board taking precautions to curb spread.
Miss Hilda Raby daughter of Mr and Mrs J C Raby of South Bend formerly of Goshen was struck by a bicyclist riding down a sidewalk on the Middlebury street hill. Injuries are serious and she was taken to South Bend last night. The cyclist rode on the sidewalk while coasting and paid little attention to pedestrians.
About 200 school teachers enrolled as the Elkhart County Teachers Institute opened at 9 30 in the Goshen High School assembly room. County Superintendent A E Weaver chaired, S Y Gillan and Miss Florence A McNeal spoke on education topics, with Gillan addressing arithmetic and mental activity methods after Miss McNeal discussed listening to the wires.
In Plato area, a smooth talking stranger befriended farmer Win Gage, agreed to buy his farm and contents, then bought 18 prized chickens on credit and departed. Gage consented to selling the birds but later learned the man planned to take them all. He is now seeking the missing agent.
Aug 28 report from Lagrange states Alvin H. Hoyt 17 was shot in the abdomen when a shotgun handled by neighbor Charles Long discharged while the pair were together. He was operated on by Dr. H A Duwling of Fort Wayne but died. Hoyt’s parents were away at the time.

E. L. Cline of New Paris, Indian Refining Co. representing, owned a valuable horse killed at 10:30 am when an oil wagon team fled north on 3rd street then west on Lincoln. One horse fell as the truck toppled, trapping the animal against a building. 20 gallons of oil spilled. Wagon damaged. no injuries, total loss about 250 dollars.
The 10th annual national conference on taxation convened in Indianapolis on August 28 and will run through Wednesday evening. The program features addresses by experts, many of whom are prominent in their states.
Paul Shaffer of Riverside Golf Clip Indianapolis won low gross with 85 in the inaugural wine hole course invitational at Wawasee. Ed Bond of Wabash was runner up at 87, while W L Groth of Warsaw captured low net with 73. Women’s winner was Mrs Gordon Taner of Indianapolis with Mrs Crittenberger of Anderson second and Mrs Kenneth Burr of Gary third.
Mayor Spohn will present a plan to Goshen’s common council to wage a tree spraying campaign this fall and next spring to protect about 16 000 trees. He conferred with the state entomologist and Kent Ohio forestry officials who urge a fall and spring spray while trees are leafless. A high powered spray will be purchased as remedies are reviewed. For weeks cottony scale has threatened Goshen’s trees and the entomologist confirms its worst form here.
Two sheep owned by Mr. Yoder, a Goshen area farmer, were killed just after 7 AM yesterday at the Wurster crossing after straying from the Yoder farm into the fair grounds and onto the westbound N. Y. C. Twenty Century train.

Frank J. Knight and his family will move to the city this Saturday from Springfield. Mrs. Knight is Flo Bachellor, formerly of this city. They will live in the west section of the Mrs. Abbie Noble residence on East Lincoln Avenue until a house is secured. Mr. Knight is employed by the Western Rubber Co.
Glenn Juday former track star from the local High School and last year a student at Indiana University contemplates teaching and coaching athletics at an Illinois high school in the coming semester. He recently decided not to return to Indiana University.
George Nihizer of Washington township was arrested on intoxication and cruelty to animals charges. He reportedly abused his horse while drunk, drawing local authorities to file the case.
In Portland, Oregon, Haines Egbert had a short visit with John S. Welch, a former Goshen resident and son of the late P. A. Welch. Welch left Goshen in 1867 and later served as an agent for the Studebaker Bros. in Kansas City for many years.
Six month old child of Jess Shively of near South Whitley suffered skull fracture when the Shively auto was forced against a telephone pole by another vehicle three miles west of South Whitley. Seven in the car escaped with the exception of the child. the opposing driver fled after the crash.
Attorney General Evan B. Stotsenburg advised Warden E. J. Fogarty that the Michigan state prison trustees have full authority to lease farm land. The lease plan uses prisoner labor to cultivate the land and pay part of the lease in farm products. The trustees recently leased a large tract near New Carlisle to grow produce for prison consumption.
A large barn and outbuildings on Mrs. Sarah Bary’s farm, now occupied by J. W. Hearn, two and a half miles northeast of Milford, were completely destroyed by fire. The cause remains uncertain, with investigators noting the blaze as possibly set by trespassers.
County commissioners schedule regular session starting Tuesday September 5 with Monday September 4 observed as Labor Day. All county offices will be closed for the holiday.

Mary Pierzschalska 20 leaped from a car at Harris and Division streets in South Bend Saturday night around 11. She died at 1 a.m. Sunday after being brought to her home at 1617 W Sample Street. Witness Mary Wieczorek refused to provide details and did not name the two men involved, noting Pierzchalska claimed familiarity with them. She thought the vehicle might have been a jitney bus.
A son was born this morning to Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Martin of 610 South Tenth street. A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Lamar Edsall of No. 317 North Second street at 4 o'clock a. m. yesterday.
Two men from the House of David in Benton Harbor Michigan conducted street services on Saturday and yesterday afternoon. Booklets describing their religion were sold after the gatherings.
