Augusta Peterson sues John Rohrer for 200 in damages over a prior assault on Levi Bowman. Bowman seeks reimbursement for medical bills and lost wages. Various local notices include divorce filings, chattel mortgage foreclosures, and a public-safety court transfer to the Elkhart asylum.
Washington reports the assassination of United States Vice Consul William C. Magellier in Beiront Syria while driving. The State Department says Minister Leischman is directed to demand arrest and punishment of the guilty parties.
After a year of stealing coal and wood from employers Shrimp and Miller, Desmond Cissne and Addison Smith are under arrest in South Bend.
Rogers' Goshen band engaged to perform in Elkhart on Labor Day with about a dozen bands. A special 10 coach train will depart Goshen at 7:30 a.m. Sunday Aug 30, fare 75 cents via Big Four. Elks lodge of Goshen to run the Benton Harbor excursion. Luther league meets at First Lutheran church at 7:30 this evening.
MisHLER Myrl Mishler two year old son of Mr and Mrs John Mishler of Foraker dies of cholera infantum last Tuesday night funeral held at Union Center. Amos Bigier aged 52 dies of heart failure three miles east of Nappanee survived by wife three sons and three daughters. Mrs Mabel Wolfe daughter of Anna Whetten of 415 South Cottage avenue dies after long illness at her mother's home. Funeral planned next Saturday at the Whetten home with interment at Milford cemetery. member of First ME church and Rev J W Magor expected to officiate.
The Goshen carnival committee reports about 1500 pledged with 500 more needed to close subscriptions for the Farmers and Merchants Fall Festival to be held Sept 23 to 26. Excursions are arranged from several cities via the Big Four Lake Shore Goshen & Michigan lines, expecting around 10 000 attendees daily and substantial revenue from participant fees.
The Irwin theatre inaugurated its ninth season after redecorating the auditorium in green and gold. Lorimer Stoddard adapted Tess of the D Urbervilles for Mrs. Fiske with Miss Carline Rohr starring. George A. Lessey plays Alec Stoke D Urberville. Balcony disturbance by boys noted. next show is Uncle Tom's Cabin on Sept 3.
Message reports the death of John Nagers in Chicago at 6 50 yesterday afternoon. He was four years old, survived by wife and child, and employed as a plumber. He left Goshen about ten years ago with his parents Mr and Mrs W Nagers. His Goshen-era father worked at the Walker factory. The remains will be brought here for burial with funeral plans to be announced.
The Syracuse and Goshen ball teams meet on the Tonawanda diamond next Tuesday afternoon. Syracuse has won 14 of 16 games and beat Columbia City Milford Iyushen and other fast semi professional teams. Smith and Teal of Ligonier will form Syracuse’s battery with Alderman and Witt for Goshen.
Samuel Broughton of the Brahm livery stable in Columbia City, recently married to Elizabeth Bunch of Whitley county, visited town for business and took morphine tablets for stomach trouble. Rumors swirl about the act, though he asked for a doctor, and old acquaintances recall tales of his past life.
Dr. Anna Barron daughter of Mr and Mrs JF Barron will take over the office and business of Dr Fred Irwin of Mishawaka on September 1. Barron recently passed an examination at Tudianapolis and has trained in Fort Wayne Goshen and other Northern Tudiana cities. Dr Irwin will locate in Birmingham Alabama.
Otto Hintz, a Mishawaka cigar maker, went to Detroit as best man for his brother. He arrived to find the brother had hanged himself an hour earlier and the wedding had to be postponed as the bridegroom-elect lay in the grave.
The Big Four operated three special trains through Goshen today to Marion and the Soldiers Home carrying 4000 people. Three hundred fifty tickets were sold at the local station. At the home a half hour drill by Civil War veterans was listed as a feature. The state board of taxation found Elkhart county land values average 23.41 dollars per acre and 27.87 dollars for lands and improvements. they increased lands by 1 percent and reduced improvements by 10 percent.
The Imperial Tea and Coffee company in the Smith room on Washington street has ceased business. O H Parsons who came from Grand Rapids Michigan started the place. Parsons has gone to Chicago and surrendered his keys to George Bowser who holds a mortgage on the stock. Several local creditors are unsecured.
Leonard J. Brooks sells the old Jackson residence at the corner of North Main street and the Big Four tracks to Mrs Susan E. Dill for 800. Susan E. Dill sells Clarence 38 Dill a lot in Mayfield addition for 1100. Miss Jennie Stewart Boysen sues White Stone Lithia hotel in South Carolina for 25000 damages over a jewelry theft. Rain showers arrive easing crops. Elkhart Review reports local teacher H. Weaver ill with appendicitis but recovering.
The Eckhart Carriage company of Auburn DeKalb county formed with capital stock of 100 dollars to manufacture carriages and automobiles. Directors are Charles Eckhart Frank E Eckhart and Morris Eckhart.
Frank Murphy a colored bootblack of St Joseph says he contracted smallpox from a South Bend colored woman who escaped detention. Elkhart Truth portraits six pretty Elkhart girls including Mae Stevens Mishler formerly of Goshen. Elke excursion to Benton Harbor Sunday Aug 30 promises Best People On Earth fun. Train Goshen 7 30 a m fare 75 cents. A handkerchief shower at Ida Overholt’s home for Bertha Conrad and John Parfitt who wed Sept 2.

Rohrer Grocery and Division Street bakery face failure with liabilities around 1000 dollars and 1500 in assets, while Walsh, Boyle & Co. holds a 3500 dollar claim. Manager Samuel Pickering of the Auditorium Theatre South Bend announces an excursion train via L A M S Railroad from this city to South Bend on Sep 10. After the performance travelers may return by the same train, arriving home shortly after. The Ben Hur production, by Lew Wallace, has drawn worldwide attention with over three hundred involved and a grand stage in South Bend's Auditorium Theatre.

Peter Martin of Huntington linked to New York swindle losing about 1000 dollars. Two barns near Nottingham Wells County burned after lightning sparked a blaze. Hartford City police broke up a prize fight between Joe Scherer of Cincinnati and Tom Monroe of Muncie Saturday night. Roby race track management aims to remove the grand stand across the Illinois state line to evade Indiana law allowing forty five days of racing. Ver non Van Fleet backs Brown while Ethan Allen Dausman supports Beveridge. Locke township may decide the outcome as Elkhart county braces for a political explosion.
Michigan City dispatch reports Westinghouse Electric will outfit the electric railway connecting South Bend and Hammond. The project, led by Russell B. Harrison and funded by an Indianapolis syndicate, will have contracts signed before estimates release. The line is planned to be built next year.
The executive committee adjourned after a two day session to arrange the annual Christmas meeting running December 29 through 31.
