The Senate, after a long rule to decide war time prohibition, resumed debate on amendments to the manpower bill passed by the House. Sen Sheppard of Texas urged immediate action in the Upper House as the House draft substitute aimed to broaden the army draft age to 18 to 45. Passage was expected late today or tomorrow.
The Navy reports a seaplane with three crew members, including Ensign Donald C. Pera, collided with another seaplane off Fire Island Saturday evening. The incident was announced by the Navy Department.
Germans launch large scale counter offensive against right wing of Gen. Mangin near Vailly and Saixons. The effort utterly fails as French forces repel the attack with no gains reported.
Paris Aug 26 three new German divisions identified opposite the British. Since Aug 5 nearly 50 German divisions have been in the fighting against the British.
Mr and Mrs Leonard J Brooks plan teaching work in Chicago after selling their South Fifth street home to Isaac Jacobs Their son Leonard J Brooks Jr has worked in Chicago for weeks for the Akron Tire and Vulcanizing Co Whistler brothers run a business nearby in Chicago
Members of the local militia company spent Sunday at Wawasee lake. The trip was made in autos furnished by members of the company.
The final union religious service of the summer drew attendees to Perk last evening, marking the close of the season. Community members participated in the gathering and reflected on the summer program.
INDIANAPOLIS August 26 Figures on the Saturday registration of males who reached 21 since June 5 were 3117 in number and tabulated by Maj Robert Baltzell state conscription agent though not all boards had reported at that hour officials stated today.
British forces push from Scarby toward Monchy-le-Preux and Orange Hill, with advances along the Bapaume-Betuapre road and toward Maricourt. German resistance remains strong near Bapaume, while artillery activity increases from Roye to the Aisne as the Hindenburg line looms south of Arras.
A fatal accident last night killed Mr Robert Artley and his wife the former residents of North City. The couple died instantly in the crash leaving behind bereaved relatives and a shaken community. Local authoritiesInvestigate cause and circumstances of the collision.
Mr and Mrs Robert Artley aged 54 and 45 were killed when their buggy was struck by a westbound special on the old N C line at Breininger crossing near Vistula while en route to their Bristol area farm home. Their daughter Marjorie escaped with minor bruises after being thrown about 100 feet. The Artleys had lived in Goshen area for years. Funeral arrangements are set for Wednesday at the family residence with burial in Oak Ridge cemetery Goshen. Surviving relatives include two stepchildren and a granddaughter.
Washington reports a 25 percent cap on passenger car and parts production for the last half of 1978 after a War Industries Board agreement with manufacturers. The board will extend preferential material access to align supply with current stock.
Twenty-eight men who turned 21 since June 5 registered in Goshen on Saturday at the court house. Officials expect most will be drafted within 30 days as current calls nearly exhaust first class manpower. Questionnaires are being mailed to new registrants by Clerk Martin of the local exemption board.
Mrs. Charles Ropuse of Union Michigan, 50, died instantly when the C S B N I interurban struck the automobile she rode in at River Bluff crossing north of Niles. Her husband and nephew escaped as the car stalled on the tracks. the body was taken to Union, Michigan.

Three prisoners fled the county jail in Elkhart on Saturday evening using clever tactics. John Harris age 21, William Johnson 18, and Earl Rice 18 escaped while George Wade 17 remained to aid in alerting authorities. A jail delivery was aided by a youth and the turnkey Leb Jones who had been summoned for water. Concluded on fourth page.
Sergt. Gerald F. Maitland, wounded at the Somme in 1916, speaks on Life in the Trenches at Court Park this evening at 8 15. He will describe Red Cross Y M C A work and efforts to aid soldiers abroad. a collection will be taken.
Mrs Anna Mentel, 41, formerly of Plymouth, died at her South Bend home after a two week illness. She had undergone surgery for a stomach tumor and appendicitis. Survived by her husband Joseph Mentel and one daughter.
Gov Goodrich appoints Judge Drake as a delegate to the American Prison Association congress in New York City October 18 to 19. Indiana will send 14 delegates from the state with this annual gathering.
Hugh M. Hayes of Elkhart testifies to accuracy of Dr. A N Davis dentist who once treated Emperor William in Berlin and wrote articles under The Kaiser As I Knew Him For Fourteen Years. Mrs Ada Painter Hopkins formerly of South Bend dies in Buffalo New York.
The state veterinarian urges improved sanitation for hogs to prevent hog cholera losses. He warns that proper care can save hog herds and reduce disease spread.
Washington August 26 Special The passage of the new draft law drew varied opinion in Congress. Representative Barnhart voted to draft men ages 20 to 45 before 18 and 19, to include all government employees, and to draft alien allies. All amendments he supported were adopted except McKenzie which would defer 18 and 19 until older men were called. The bill passed 167 130 with near unanimity in the Indiana delegation.
President Wilson and senate prohibition leaders expect the war time national ban to pass in the senate. They favor extending the effective date from January 1 next, with negotiations underway. Senator Sheppard says passage is certain, while wets and drys clash over how long the extension should be.
Ellery F. Ernsberger declined the postmaster position at Howe leaving a vacancy with a salary near 1500 dollars annually. The first vacancy followed Clarence Schaeffer's resignation due to illness. Deputy Postmaster B. E. Kimmel oversees the office.
Private John R. Twoltz of Wabash county and cousin of Marion Eichholtz, a Western Union telegraph operator, was killed while serving in France with American forces. Next of kin listed as Mrs. Sue McGrath of Alberts Street, Wabash.
The Kelly Motor Co has sold a new Ford touring car to Chas Wallace of Goshen.
Lieut Frederick W Morrice of Canton Illinois formerly of Goshen, injured when thrown from a horse during training at Camp Grant, Rockford Illinois, has been sent to the Army and Navy hospital at Hot Springs for an indefinite stay. His condition is very satisfactory but he is weak and gains strength slowly. Mrs Morrice arrived in Goshen from Rockford last night.
Ray Larimer, 22, son of James A. Larimer of near Fish Lake, is in military training at Camp Sherman Chillicothe Ohio. Drafted from Elkhart County division No. 1, he left Goshen June 24. A carpenter by trade, he recently married Miss Helen Shunk and writes from camp detailing his training experiences.
Orrin Watts recalls the origins of Old Bullion at Lincoln Park near 6th and South Main. In 1860 Moses Stinson and Watts were sent by Plain Township Democrats to Goshen to commission a cannon. Barnes Foundry showed a Republican cannon that burst, marking the first sight of Old Bullion. Sammes Allen later gave it the name while in his possession.
Willam E. VanAlstine of Elkhart Brook arrested for alleged possession of intoxicating liquor. After posting 200 bond he was released to appear in city court. Officers noted him entering McCarty's Restaurant with a suitcase. three quarts of whiskey were confiscated, with part of a quart belonging to Ray McCarty.
The United States steamer Theodore Roosevelt has been moved from Michigan City to South Chicago for rebuilding. Since being commandeered in spring, it has rested in upper Michigan City harbor under guard. Captain E. A. Evers says it will later go to England to transport troops across the English Channel.
Lafayette White is under arrest charged with vacating a house and leaving it in filthy condition as the new South Bend ordinance requiring tenants to keep premises sanitary faces a court test.
Twenty four hours after her daughter Henrietta Serf aged 18 died of pneumonia at Gary Mrs Elmo Serf aged 38 using a revolver shot herself through the heart dying instantly in the same incident

Rep Barnhart of Rochester Ind warns Congress about a paper shortage that could force the president to commandeer stocks to publish government materials. The joint congressional committee authorized the warning after meeting earlier in the day.
Jefferson D. Wood died at his daughter Iva Wood Parker’s home in Elkhart after a long illness from Brights disease. He had been bed-confined since February 24, 1918. Survived by two daughters and one son. Born near Camden, Ohio on July 8, 1844, he was a farmer who bred fine cattle.
Mayme Murray-Hawkins and Chas. A Mayer of this city were married Saturday evening. They spent their honeymoon at South Bend. Mayer, formerly of the Lou Tracy bar in Elkhart, is now on the N O railroad. They will reside in Goshen.
