Elkhart county arranged a 820,000 loan secured by the State bank after only two bids. City National Bank offered 5,010 for 9 months at 8 percent, totaling 5,225. State Bank offered 5,000 for 9 months with 5,200 at expiration. State Bank awarded the loan.
Fred Hess, Columbia City insane blackmailer, moved from Becknell hospital to Columbia City jail and attempted suicide in Whitley county jail. He used a towel and rope fashioned from a table cloth, but the devices broke. He stated spells control him and asked his mother for forgiveness in a farewell letter. Authorities will remove items that could aid self harm.
Elkhart mourns widowed Sarah Newell at 79 after old age decline and a daughter Mrs Lamb survives. Ten Co E soldiers who attended the Indiana state encampment show typhoid symptoms from bad water. Co G reports no illness. Moses H Barron of Elkhart, heir to a $1.5 million New York estate from Aunt Fidelia Barron, plans to travel to claim lands.
Meesr. August Tapetina violinist and D. A. Demaselli harpist left Goshen for Warsaw after several open air concerts. They visit Goshen annually for nearly twenty years and have many friends here. They plan a short Warsaw stay before heading to Wabash and may be booked by the Wioona management.
Norman J. Cornell resigns from W. H. Laidley & Co. and will move to Newark to lead a Columbus firm branch. Harley O. Patt to replace Cornell as Postal company manager here. Walter L. Mahn becomes Postal manager. Mahn’s successor at Western Union not yet named.
The horse Banjo, sold by Gardner and Elliott to Maine buyers, competed in the horse elbow at Bangor and won the silver cup in the round-abonut class among ten entrants. It later sold for 900 dollars.
The Goshen City band performed last night at the Washington and Main corner conducted by Edward Steinmetz to a large crowd. Wilson Roose, now in Columbus, Ohio, will return to Goshen September 1 to resume law practice. Mr John Pelema of Nappanee has come back from a six week European tour visiting England Scotland Holland France and Germany. Waterford High School group performs after intermission.
Creditors to seek a receiver for the Ohio and Indiana Electric railway known as the Pillied Suburban line from Angola to Lake James. Liabilities total about 50000 with wages due and work suspended as alien assets valued at 14000. National Mill Light and Water once provided power and now defunct with over 100000 in liabilities. funds from Kinney Bank may have been diverted to the railway project.
James A. Carter, formerly a clerk at Hotel Hascail and late proprietor of the Arlington Hotel in Rochester, Ind., died last week. He had been a landlord at the Arlington Hotel.
The F Dela Claire Perfume Co awarded prizes for proposed perfume names. Miss Maude Champion won with Flossadora while other entries Flaureine and La Reine de Fleuer were submitted by Toledo and South Bend ladies. Prizes include an exhibition at Hawks drug store.
W E Winkle a sailor in the U S Naval service was in the city en route to his Indianapolis home. He has not visited his native city in four years. Winkle is chief electrician on the battleship New Marine but currently acts as warrant officer. He plans to spend several weeks at home then report for duty in New York and likely be sent abroad on a long cruise.
Dispatches from Indianapolis say the L E M E company will open an through train between Indianapolis and Chicago via LaPorte and the L E W. The move could boost patronage from South Bend as riders gain a direct route.
Rev. G. W. Parker left this morning for Kokomo and tomorrow will attend the Western Indiana Christian Conference in Yeddo. He participates in the conferences for the Dayton Public Company of Dayton Ohio.
While pulling out of Elkhart this forenoon the eastbound Lake Shore train No 2 broke down. The engine was moved to the round house and a replacement secured, causing about a 25 minute delay.
Mr Wm Redden of the Baintertown Roller Mills said the mill is running at full capacity again after a recent closure for repairs. No notices were received about a Wawasee Fish Hatching association meeting as it will wait for Commissioner Sweeney to attend.
James A. Jadie will construct an eight story office building on the site just south of the Nickel hotel in South Bend. He has purchased the Oliver property for 15500 dollars.
William Ruas, 72, died at home two miles south of Wamaw after a fall. The notice lists W. W. Hatch & Son as contract havers and pending payments at Plymouth Mon Sonee Center street.
Tarrance Lorton a plumber living at 910 South Eighth street and employed by Frank Leibole claims his life was targeted through tainted food. A specimen of lard from his home is at Chipman Pharmacy for analysis. no glass found yet and poison tests continue. This follows domestic strife after Mrs Lorton, formerly Celestia Foltz Lee, visited Grand Rapids and returned to Toledo prompting concerns for his mental state.
A body discovered Sunday by hunter Oliver Jordan in Fulton county between Monterey and Delong is that of a man about 5 feet 7 inches tall with a severed head and gnawed by muskrats. Clothes imply means, pockets held a gold watch and waterlogged papers. five gold teeth and medium light hair noted. Coroner’s inquest cites probable homicide by blows to the temple as the skulls show crushed sides.
The Lake Shore plans special excursion trains from LaPorte and Kendallville to South Bend for the Kian and Erlanger Ben Hur production at the Auditorium the week of August 7. LaPorte riders depart Tuesday evening. Kendallville delegates travel Thursday evening. Goshen has no special night due to electric railway links. Manager Pickering has many Goshen orders on file and matinee parties are being organized. Seat and box sales begin September 3.

The Knox visitors were routed in a one sided game as Alderman’s twisters held Goshen to a dominant path. Vogt of Elkhart homered with two on in a 9 2 score. Doteon umpired well as Knox heads to Columbia City Syracuse and Ligonier games with Goldstein Kelly and Becknell.
Dr. M D Price of the Nappanee club leads efforts as Elkhart county gun clubs unite. Delegates will attend a Goshen conference on Tuesday September 1st with Nappanee members Will Smith and B B Maust named. The group aims to boost trap shooting by seasonal tournaments at accessible county locations.
Martin Duane of St Joseph Michigan died of consumption. He served as assistant private secretary to James G Blaine during the 1884 campaign. A noted expert accountant and statistician, he had political influence but was ruined by drink. His Chicago wife sought divorce and died soon after, Duane learned of her death from Berrien county jail for a petty offense. He will be buried in Chicago.
The Niles car nival grossed about $1000 with 10 percent to the local committee and 90 percent to Robinson Carnival company. About 35000 tickets were sold at 10 15 and 25 cents. Goshen expects 25 percent from shows on the percentage plan, implying the Niles group may have been favorable.
Eari Nixon, once jailed for manslaughter after a spring arrest, returned from Indianapolis where he worked in a factory and stole a bicycle. He was yesterday committed to prison under the indeterminate sentence act for theft.

Peter Johnson of Berrien County sues neighbor Jacob Ayr alleging Ayr circulated reports that Johnson forged notes and wrecked a Big Four train. The alleged incident is described as occurring about 12 years ago.
An OCR fragment notes the electric line in the South Bend Niles area carried 21 967 passengers in the first week and mentions a 1 8 prospective point for location and a total of 32 957 passengers overall.
Mark Reese known as the Boy Blondin faced a public dispute over his mother with his father and a woman in Buffalo claiming motherhood. After a wire accident in Chicago, the manager received a telegram from the Buffalo woman.
