About 275 teachers attended the annual Elkhart county institute. Mrs. W. Vallette of Goshen presented a thorough paper on schools, Elkhart court room overflowed, with Miss Conner’s elocution and extra musical numbers. Speakers urged practical study, agriculture in schools, and a flexible state course of study.
A Goshen newspaper report claiming Mrs. M. Albert Stripe eloped with Edward Badger is false. Mrs. Stripe was visiting Waterford, read the item, and returned home. Mr. Stripe may drop plans for a divorce as details of the alleged elopement are unwound. Badger, a Wabash plasterer, had prior trouble in Goshen last year.
A Harrison township farmer lost in the city asked Goshen police for help after driving to town and leaving his horse at a friend’s barn. He was unsure of directions and the man he sought, but officers eventually found he wanted to reach South Seventh street.
The Mehl family gathered at the home of Mr and Mrs John Plank yesterday with about 150 attendees. A morning program featured songs and a reading by Alva Mehl. Lee Hostetter and John C Mehl spoke and A C Mehl read a paper. Among guests were Christian Meir and his wife, both over 80, celebrating family ties with children grandchildren and great grandchildren. Orlando Plank was elected president Florence Mehl secretary and Edna Koonse treasurer for the coming year. Committees were named to organize next year but date and venue will be decided by the executive committee.
Goshen Elks beat Marion Elks 10 to 8 at Marion in a hard fought game. Witt left with a badly injured finger after the first inning. Go shen rallied with two scores in the final frame as R. B. Kelly fanned three batters with bases loaded in the seventh. Marion plans another matchup, likely in Goshen or Benton Harbor, following gracious hosting of Goshen in Marion. Batteries Charles and Marley. Kelly and Williams.
The second attraction of the season appeared last evening when As Told in the Hills a melodrama played at the Irwin opera house. Miss Emily Gale starred as an Indian maiden. The play aimed for popular thrills and drew a small audience due to heavy rain.
In Elkhart Judge Dodge in chambers names M A Demarest receiver for the Robert Jones Co grocers at 729 South Main. Demarest is inventorying and selling perishable goods. The receivership follows Noblesville Milling Co suit seeking $200. The company affairs are said to be not extensive.
Rain dampened the start of the St Joseph Valley Chautauqua at Highland Park Elkhart delaying opening by Mayor Greene and A P Kent. Mrs Eleanor Bingham spoke on Twelve Famous Paintings and Gov Lafollette and William Jennings Bryan were billed as coming magnets for crowds. The Cleveland ladies orchestra is featured as a permanent attraction.
The Warsaw Goshen electric line project will move from the John B Marshall company of New York City to the Electrical Insulation company of Chicago. The Chicago firm is prepared to start work and finish by the deadline, since the New York firm cannot relocate tools and men in time.
Sam Forman of Marion lost a purse containing $66 after alighting a Big Four train from Goshen to Marion. He realized the loss after the train headed to Indianapolis and notified the ticket agent. Anderson and Indianapolis agents reported no purse found.
John Hoy of Plymouth Indiana died suddenly in Toledo last week. Coroner Storz ruled death from natural causes after viewing the remains. Harry D Hoy of South Bend and Charles Hoy of Plymouth traveled to Ohio to investigate the death.
Nine and a half year old Charles Walz of South Bend died under chloroform while awaiting a simple operation. The heart failure occurred suddenly and was deemed unforeseen by those present.
Miss Cora Hoogeboom wed Garrett Clason in an East Goshen home ceremony held at eight o’clock in Dutch. About 150 relatives and friends attended as Rev. Kizer of Kalamazoo officiated, followed by a late repast and toasts to the couple.
Chief Wilkie announces a new five dollar silver certificate from the 1880 Lyons register and Roberts treasurer series. The note is poorly printed on two thin sheets with many lettering mistakes on the face.
The remains of Levi Pletcher killed at Toledo on Monday were laid to rest this forenoon. The funeral was held at the brick Mennonite church in Clinton township.
In Grand Rapids Michigan a yellow fever scare centers on Godfrey Limburg a telephone lineman who left New Orleans a week ago and fell ill Saturday his temperature reaching 105 yesterday as doctors faced delays in care and the outbreak rumor spreads locally.
Fort Wayne Catholic Diocese head H J Alerding will sail early next month for Rome to visit the pope. Judge Benjamin F Fish of Niles, 88, remains spry and recalls boating on the St Joseph river from 1834 to 1850 as the last survivor of that era.
Grace Monschein and Charles Morrice were united in marriage last evening at 8 o clock in Elkhart by Rev S Light. Both residents of Goshen were the parties. Marriage license issued in South Bend.

Samuel Burger aged 47 died at work from a burst blood vessel likely from overexertion lifting a box, not heart failure, with no prior heart illness reported.
Niagara Falls trips lose appeal in the region with only about 20 Lake Shore tickets sold for the annual excursion. Passengers mainly used the cheap fare to visit eastern points as railroad men note waning demand and warn of potential abandonment if patronage declines.

In Lapeer Michigan a sailboat capsized on Lake Netpessing drowning Mrs. Joseph Yorker and Mrs. Ed gar Cox. Mrs. William B. Boulton is not expected to live after being pulled from the water. Edgar Cox witnessed the disaster from shore and is now missing, feared to have fallen in or jumped in. All victims resided in Lapeer.
A severe electrical storm struck DeKalb County causing Ben Moffett’s large farm barn to burn to the ground. Grain and hay were destroyed and several horses were removed from the flames. Loss is reported as heavy but exact figures are unavailable.
A woman claiming to be the wife of William Maxwell of Penwater posted a $500 bond to secure a prisoner's appearance in the September term of the circuit court. The accused had been charged with stealing a $250 diamond from M. A. Price, a cigar manufacturer in St. Joseph, Michigan.
An eight year old son of Eli Garber from near Dunlaps injured his foot with a new ax, was taken to a local physician for treatment this morning, and the wound was dressed.

A Frankfort dispatch reports a sensational suit filed by William Cokayne of Owen township against Elkhart Mutual Life Association officers Lee Barney George Barney James Holland and Edward Campbell. The State of Indiana accuses them of conspiracy to obtain money and cites improper chartering and insurance violations. Deputy Sheriff Jackson took warrants to Elkhart for the arrest of the defendants who are expected to post bond pending trial.
Manager Irwin announces the Isle of Spice revival for Monday evening September 25. This was last season’s best booking and draws unusual interest. Rose Melville comes back to Goshen in Sis Hopkins at the Irwin opera house signaling her farewell in the Hoosier girl role.

Following the Pullman Company delivery of complete new equipment for the Twentieth Century Limited 18 hour train the rail system places a new order for updated equipment on all through trains. The purchase will cost more than twelve million dollars.
An automobile veered into a ditch at Kendallville as the chauffeur attempted to avoid an oncoming vehicle. In the other car were Misses Helen Teal and Zada Geauque and Ned Thomas.
A violent storm drenched South Bend yesterday afternoon with so much rain that a cloudburst was suspected. Widespread flooding and a display of electrical damage were reported as the storm caused notable destruction.

A son and daughter of C D Ine binet near Elkhart prairie are seriously ill with typhoid fever and cholera infantum. John Gilbert, previously at Benton Harbor for rheumatism, returns home greatly improved.
A contract to complete the Indiana Pythian building was let Saturday to John Pierce, general contractor for the new Indianapolis post office. The project is valued at about $400,000.
