20th century Elkhart report details Herman Potisman, a Hungarian grocer, struck by a Ford delivery car on Ren Street as a long freight train passed. Witnesses recall watching the collision and its aftermath.
Henry Pottsman a 30 year old Hungarian grocer of Elkhart residents at 325 St Joe street was instantly killed when west bound New York Central train No 25 struck his Ford auto delivery car at Ren street crossing near Pisot of Gossard Corset Co. Witnesses say he drove onto the crossing after a freight train cleared. Body hurled 59 feet. car reduced to wreck. Survived by wife and four daughters. Coroner Mast held inquest. no blame charged to railroad.
Two Wabash Railroad freight trains No 82 east bound and No 95 west bound collided head on at Stony Creek one mile east of Millersburg early this morning. Four cars derailed and a wrecker from Peru was needed. No one was hurt and traffic was delayed until No 11 arrived about an hour late. Wreck attributed to misreading orders at the Stony Creek siding.
At a vestry meeting of St James church Rev Fr L T Scofield submitted his resignation after over two years as rector. The board accepted the resignation to take effect October 1. Scofield came to Goshen from Logansport succeeding Fr Roland who moves to St Paul Minnesota.
The St Joseph county board of commissioners ordered bids to lay a concrete floor on the county line bridge over the St Joseph river near Osceola. The bridge is in dangerous condition. An agreement with Elkhart county at Mishawaka sets St Joseph to proceed with the contract and Elkhart to pay its share.
The five year old daughter of Men non Stauffer seven miles southeast of Elkhart is helpless from infantile paralysis. Doctors diagnosed it after a week of treatment for another disease. The source of infection remains unknown.
After a six week vacation the Knights of Pythias lodge will hold its regular weekly meetings in the hall commencing tonight. A full attendance is desired.
Owing to low gas pressure the Democrat's mechanical equipment faces disruption and considerable matter is omitted today.
Allied forces including French British Serbian and Russian troops converge in Saloniki as the Balkan offensive expands. Russian brigades arrive to join Serbs on the southern frontier of Serbia while Italian troops of notable size prepare to link with French British and Serbian units. Rumors of Roumania joining the war persist amid reports of progress along a 150 mile Macedonian front and slow gains on the Somme.
Thirty-five members of the Indiana National Guard, with dependent families, arrived in Indianapolis from Llano Grande after training there with the state units. They went to Fort Benjamin Harrison for muster out.
James B. Wilson of Bloomington, progressive nominee for United States senator, has quit the ticket. The development alters campaign plans and leaves the ticket without its announced candidate in the long term race.
The White Hussars were heard at the Chautauqua tent with good organization. Another concert is scheduled for this evening featuring the Schumann Quintet which pleased attendees.

The Foster Machine Co of Elkhart increased its capital stock from 100000 dollars to 500000 dollars, expanding its financial base and corporate capacity.
Abbott Dunker a former Goshen saloonist is under arrest in Elkhart on forgery charges. He allegedly induced Chief of Police Riblet to cash a worthless $2 check and passed eight other bad checks totaling $23 on James Morris of Elkhart. Dunker, living with his brother in Howe, is divorced with two children. one child remains near Goshen, the other with his brother.
Washington Aug 22 President Wilson summoned his cabinet to brief sessions amid the looming nationwide railroad strike. Railroad executives were not ready for another conference, while leaders of the four brotherhoods met to keep the men united. Significant developments were anticipated in the coming days.
Laura B. Replogle files for divorce from Oliver A. Replogle in circuit court alleging marriage on November 6 1900 and separation February 1 1916 with adultery charges and accused numerous women companions with whom he has practiced legal relations.
Mrs. Alice J. Harvey, 66, died from burns at her Vincennes residence after attempting to carry a pan of gasoline outside. A spark from her pipe ignited the fuel, causing fatal injuries in the Aug. 22 incident.
Ferdinand Menninger a 20 year old laborer from Elkhart is in General hospital after a fall at the N Y C station in Elkhart. He struck his head on brick pavement and is delirious. He came from Akron five weeks ago. doctors say he may recover.
