London reports the French tenth army pressed a ten mile front between the Oise and Aisne, reaching two miles depth. The advance threatens German positions near Soissons and the Aisne river with a possible withdrawal toward Chemin-des-Dames. By nine am the French had taken about 500 German prisoners.
Allied reports state French forces pushed back German troops over a ten mile front between the Aisne and Oise rivers with depth not yet specified. French penetrations could threaten Soissons and the Chemin des Dames while British lines near Chilly faced repeated counterattacks repulsed.
An undated Paris report states German airmen bombed Nancy again, killing six civilians and wounding many. Earl Hall, brought from Imperial Nebraska by Sheriff Sanford to answer a wife and child desertion charge in Elkhart, was released on $500 bond.
The Carson administration in South Bend seeks 500000 dollars to cover running expenses for the year 1919, outlining the need for city operations and services.
Evansville based F. W. Cook Brewing Co petitioned for rehearing in the Indiana bone dry law case. The state supreme court had upheld the prohibition law, reversing a lower court injunction against Evansville police enforcing the law.

Clarence Johnson twenty one of Chesterton Porter county was killed instantly when his motorcycle struck an obstruction in the road. He rolled and fell in front of an automobile driven by Fred Rhoda near Valparaiso Indiana.
The pending bill would extend eligibility for military service to ages 18 through 45. This change means few young men will return to their schools this fall as many are expected to be placed in class one and face an early call.

Navy department said an American steamer rammed and likely sunk a submarine about 5 30 p m on August 17 near Winter Quarter shoal off the northern Virginia coast The submarine crew spoke with a German accent calling themselves friends The captain said he replied that they were friends of his and continued on course
Three thousand men in Indiana are to register for the draft under Washington orders. Maj. Robert Blatzell and Adjutant General Harry B. Smith estimate the figure from a statewide survey. Draft boards are to ready for registering men aged 21 since June 5 1918, with Goshen hosting the Elkhart county division 11 registration at the courthouse.
The alien property custodian A Mitchell Palmer announced the seizure of 1 057 000 pounds of de vitalized wheat gluten destined for Germany via Switzerland. Valued at about 200 000 dollars in pre war times, the grain was found in June in a New York warehouse ready for overseas shipment.

Washington announces two casualty lists dated yesterday naming Indiana residents by status killed in action missing in action wounded severely and dying from disease or accidents. The list includes Corp Geo Glackman and Pvt Otis C Jackson among the KIA and several others from Indianapolis Hammond Noblesville and Vincennes with multiple entries for wounded and missing.
Washington August 20 two army casualty lists issued today contain 275 names. Of these 147 were killed in action 7 died of wounds 4 died of diseases or other causes 4 missing and 100 wounded severely with 4 wounded degree undetermined. Names include Pvt Cecil Gaberson Indianapolis Pvt Harold C Goodrich Crown Point and Pvt Chas Becca Gary. Missing Pvt William R Hlawley Indianapolis Wounded severely Pvt Edward Wildey Earl Park.
A marine casualty list issued today names 31 personnel. Killed in action six, died of wounds five, died of disease one, severely wounded seven, slightly wounded one, wounded degree undetermined eleven. The sole Indiana resident is Pvt. Oscar S. Shover of Indiana Harbor, killed in action.
The annual meeting of mates of this section will be held Sunday at Middlebury. Attendance is expected to be unusually large with Mr and Mrs W H Canode and Mr and Mrs William S Yoder among local attendees. Last year the mates met in Bristol.
A. G. Te, operator of the O. K. Barber shop for Homer Marshall, now in military training at Camp Zachary Taylor Kentucky, will close the business tomorrow evening.
Miss Ruth Schoonover and Clarence M. Trainor of this city united in marriage today. They are well known in local circles.
Hundreds were killed and wounded in Petrograd during food disorders as Lettish guards clashed with rioters near the Smolny Institute. Workers marched shouting Down with the Germans and Down with the Kremlin as martial law was proclaimed.
South Bend woman learns from the war department that her son Lieut Arnold Matthew McInerny was killed July 18 leading his command in the allied advance north of Soissons. He had been wounded August 6. Survived by his mother two sisters and a brother. He was former circulation manager of the South Bend News-Times.
National press outlets will reduce weekday issues by about 15 percent and Sunday editions by around 20 percent as directed by the war industries board. The order also prohibits new newspapers during the war and aims to curb wasteful circulation.

City Attorney Wider reports a state public service commission order moving the New York Central subway plan under Main street crossing in Elkhart toward action after the war. The city and railroad must file specifications by August 1, 2019, after a July 25 hearing. Traffic data show 24,509 pedestrians and 3,340 autos plus 500 wagons and buggies crossed in 17 hours.
Miss Margaret Kahle at Bartholomew County Hospital Columbus receives a letter from her brother Edward Kahle in Indianapolis who is at base hospital 32 in France. He reports that on July 24 one night 1200 patients were admitted among them 800 Americans with 500 needing operations. He praises American soldiers as finest and most game and believes victory is assured for the Allies.
Moritz Heiermann aged 75 formerly of South Bend died at his daughter Mrs Tocelmack’s home in Hartford Michigan. Interment followed in South Bend. Leila Place of Walkerton died at Epworth hospital South Bend after two weeks of illness. Survived by husband three sons one daughter and her parents Mr and Mrs George Leslie.

The United States Army Recruiting Station in Indianapolis seeks volunteers aged 46 to 55 for staff departments including quartermasters, dancers, and signals. Qualified mechanics, electricians, truck drivers, chauffeurs, storekeepers, and even unskilled workers with ability are welcome. Pay is $30 per month with free necessities and government family allowances.
Republican Howard Inebait and Democrat Charles E. Fridley plan visits to Bristol to complete voter registration in outlying areas. They previously toured Wakarusa where many voters registered locally instead of traveling to the city or Elkhart.
