Field Marshal Haig reports progress between the Oise and Aisne rivers as the French 10th Army penetrates nearly two miles at the front. German machine gunners resist and German air service stays active.
Paris reports French forces attacked at 6 pm along a ten mile front between Carlepont and Fontenoy near Gibecourt Seissons advancing about one and a third miles. London notes British progress near Melville in the Lys salient with a handful of machine guns seized.
Paris states 1700 German prisoners captured after a nine mile French assault from Carlepont to Fonteynoy along the Oise Aisne front. French advances of up to two miles reach Nantoel and Nouvron Vinvre with towns taken and edge of ravine at Auvignicourt reached. Local actions on Picardy front yield 400 more prisoners as British push near Ar ras and Lys sector.
Conrad Grim, 19, described as mentally deranged, is missing from his South Bend home. His mother, Anna Krueger, has enlisted police assistance in locating him.
Robert Miller of 211 North Seventh Street has shown significant improvement after illness. Mrs. L. L. Burris also shows materially better condition.
Washington reports Sweden is urged by the Swedish consular office in Moscow to send a ship to Petrograd to remove 200 refugees or secure permission for them to transit Finland. The refugees are believed Americans and allied citizens fleeing Russia. The Swedish consul general notes Germany refused safe conduct for any refugees, a policy linked to talks with England on Germans in China.
The provost marshal general called 18 states to furnish 5709 white draft registrants with grammar school education fit for general military service. They will entrain on Sept. 1 with voluntary enlistments open until Aug. 26. Indiana will send 772 to Purdue and 515 to Indiana polis for training at centers in special service fields.
The Norwegian bark Nordhav was sunk 125 miles off the Virginia capes by a German submarine. Her crew escaped in small boats and have been brought into an Atlantic port by an American warship.
Washington reports 1355 overseas casualties for the week ending Sunday, compared with 4916 the prior week. Total overseas casualties to date stand at 21467.
A report states Michigan City will lose the division headquarters of the Michigan Central railroad. A 1200 acre tract at Niles will host yards a round house and shops associated with the move.
In Indianapolis the War Department allocates 125000 to Fort Benjamin Harrison to cover upgrades. The funds will establish the site as a station for engineers and support the fort's military role.
The St Joseph Valley Golf association tournament ended with St Joseph and Laporte tied for first after Saturday play. A deciding match to determine first and second will be held at Chain O Lakes course next Saturday. Local eight man team lost 14 to 7 at St Joseph while South Bend fell 14 to 8 to Elkhart and Mishawaka lost 19 to 2 to Laporte.
George Shively son of the late Senator B F Shively of South Bend is in a French hospital recovering from shrapnel wounds suffered while rescuing wounded on the battle front. Injuries include holes in the left forearm left foot and right leg with a broken leg. Condition reported as satisfactory.
Edith Blyly two year old daughter of Mr and Mrs William Blyly drowned in the St Joseph river near her Elkhart home Saturday afternoon. Attempts to revive her with a pul motor failed after she was under water for some time.
Three Indianapolis men were killed in action while serving with American forces in France. Sergeant George Cocker, Pref Oral Dean, and Private Cecil Anderson died in combat during the ongoing campaign.
Penal Overholt son of Mr and Mrs Henry Overholt of Goshen now serves as a second class seaman in the US Navy. He has been transferred from France to Italy and is stationed at the US naval air station Porto Torresine Italy. His mother reports receiving a letter from him this morning.
Sheriff Sanford returns from Imperial Nebraska with Earl Hall who was arrested there on request of local officers. Hall is charged with deserting his wife and children in Elkhart several months ago.
F. W. Curtis of Curtis Tractor Co Chicago files affidavit claiming he was beaten in a South Bend saloon after buying whiskey. Bartenders Funny Stein er and Frank Harris held in custody.
P. J. Kaufman publisher of the Gospel Teacher at Wawaka announces he can no longer provide the paper free to the worthy poor to comply with the law.
Miss Ruth Miles of Syracuse is appointed superintendent of Cromwell schools becoming the first woman in the post. She previously served as superintendent of Salem Indiana schools. Katherine Rothenberger of Syracuse will teach at Cromwell.
The condition of Mrs Tyson remains very critical at the home of her daughter Mrs E A Carpenter on South Fifth Street.

Miss Edna M Bremercamp daughter of Mrs Mary Bremercamp of 1010 South Main and aoe Newell son of Mr and Mrs J E Newell of 411 South Sixth street were married late Friday afternoon at Vicksburg Michigan by Rev F A Van nuys pastor of the First Presbyterian church. The wedding was a surprise to relatives and friends reported by telegram from Mr and Mrs Newell. After the ceremony the couple will motor to Cleveland and other points before returning to Goshen. The bride formerly worked in the Home Telephone Co office and the groom is with Newell Bros Co dry goods firm. Also mention of Miss Gertrude Davidson of Elkhart attending a party in South Bend for Miss Julia Compton of South Bend who is to marry John Walker of Mishawaka.
Herman Rauser aged 50 of Laporte has been offered parole or jail after confinement in Marion county jail since March 30 on a presidential warrant. He allegedly stated support for the Hun cause and no intention to become a citizen, and is believed to have been a non commissioned officer in the Kaiser's army before returning to his Laporte home.
Thurston BE Rice a 32 year old farmer was killed instantly on his Lawrenceburg area farm while helping haul hay when lightning struck the pitchfork he held. He died at the scene and the incident was reported by local authorities.
De Weisenaar, 16, who disappeared from Kokomo on May 15, wrote her father from Indianapolis. She says she masqueraded as a boy and found work as a bootblack there.

Roy Mercier, a close friend of Turney and Mrs. Hatfield, took a bullet through one hand while leading an advance and was in a hospital after a major battle. Mrs. Hatfield received a letter from him describing the events.
A new system for reporting U S overseas casualties becomes effective. Publication is now under the Post Office Department and newspapers nationwide will receive copies by mail.

Helen M Manthe seeks divorce from Edward Manthe for cruel treatment and asks 1000 in alimony. Greek laborers on the New York Central line near Goshen paid 14 50 in fines for Sunday hunting violations. James Matthews deputy warden filed the complaint.
Marion James Courrier sues Andrew Simpson for 17 dollars after Simpson killed Courrier's cat. Court records note 15.75 assigned to the cat and 1.25 for ribbon and bell. The neighborhood is subpoenaed to testify.
Edward 8. Wuenn, 65, of Michigan City, despondent over poor health, shot himself. He told his wife he would go to a nearby cigar store, then went to his son’s upholstering shop and fired a bullet into his brain.
W. R. Coverston is in Cleveland with Mrs Coverston returning from a six weeks trip in California. Mrs Herbert Adams will entertain the Tri Kappa Sorority. Madame Soper, once with Marinello parlors, visited from Niles Michigan. Mrs Otto Gengnagel left for Auburn due to her mother’s serious illness. Mr and Mrs Chas Springer and Hazel Springer with Miss Bell Springer of Saginaw Michigan traveled from Grand Rapids to Goshen visiting Mrs Springer and Mrs Coulter. Hazel Springer accompanied them back to Michigan for two weeks.
Agreement reached at today's session clears the path for Senate action on a draft bill next Thursday. The session ended with formal consensus among lawmakers.
Secretary Baker testified before the House Military Committee that there will be no general exemption for married men in the draft age extension. He noted many married men must still fight if supporting families and not in useful occupations. Gen March said eighty American divisions of 45,000 each could end the war in 1919, with deployment in France by June 30 next year. Senate consideration of the manpower bill will start next Thursday as sessions resume August 24.

The Goshen Greys travel to Marion next Sunday afternoon to face the Marion Nationals, a strong central Indiana semi pro ball club that has won 17 of 19 games this season.
Miss Betty McKeever daughter of Private Clarence W McKeever and wife lives at 301 North Main street received a fractured arm late Saturday afternoon after being thrown from a pony.
F. W. Lanner of Syracuse and his mother Mrs J Lanner have purchased the Elmer P Miles and Sear Foss Brothers groceries at Syracuse.
