Joseph Spahr four miles southeast of town attempted suicide by swallowing five grains of strychnine after returning from Goshen. He survived after vomiting and antidotes but remained despondent and refused to reveal access to the drug.
A city special committee approved a permit to use the downtown streets and alleys for the Farmers and Merchants Fall Festival September 23 to 26. The route spans Jefferson to Clinton and Fifth to Third, with 20 feet of alley use and free city electricity and water. Merchants warned of possible injunctions without emergency protections, while new attractions including the Electric Theatre Wonderland Old Plantation and Dancing Girls were added and a 60 foot Ferris Wheel from Sans Souci park will be brought in.
Yocuxe Samuel D. Young died at his Nappanee home Monday evening aged about 76 from stomach cancer. He is survived by his wife and three children Daniel A Amos P and Mrs Jesse H Kingenberger. Deceased moved to the county 46 years ago. Dennis Joseph J Dennis died at South Bend Monday aged 1 year born Milford lived most of his life in Nappanee funeral set for Thursday.
Indiana music fans welcome Signor Giuseppe Creatore and his band back to Winona for two weeks next season after signing the contract before departing for Detroit. He plans a long stay when his Italian family arrives and has bought stock in the assembly association. The band is now in Cleveland this week and Warsaw Union notes Creatore and Madame Barill have each purchased cottages at Winona.
The Washington street sewer relaying is finished by contractor Klopfenstein with likely no further trouble. Residents discuss paving the block on Washington and the adjacent Third street in spring. More pavement is hoped for Goshen next year. Rev Pearce, formerly of the First Baptist church, is in frail health and may resign in Pennsylvania. if so, he plans to move back to Goshen to live and educate his children.
Henry Brown from a Stonelake area drove to Goshen with home grown watermelons. The Bristol harvest jubilee aims to entertain a large crowd but rain is feared to affect attendance. Melons are reported very fine and sweet.
James Carter of the Arlington hotel is in critical condition. A suspect described as a negro who attempted a swindling scheme in Kosciusko county is under arrest in St Joseph Michigan. J C Beck Jr was ordered today to take charge of postal ran on the Lake Shore line.
Charles Connors known as Happy Connors, visiting Lake Wawasee with glass blowers, was shot by Will Stafford a colored barber at Bob Ebert's place. Stafford fired twice the second shot hit Connors under the right eye. Connors taken to Syracuse. Rivalry over a woman noted. Connors a widower.
Kinney and Co bankers who failed in Angola have been backing the Lake James electric line. The collapse will disrupt several electric railway plans in the area and affect local utilities and transportation projects.
Betting on the yacht race favors the Reliance at 2 to 1. E G Cook of South Bend advertises Ben Hur at the South Bend Auditorium for September 7, predicting about 20 000 from eight performances six nights and two matinees. Klaw & Erlanger will attend with Lew Wallace Joseph Brooks and Marc Klaw to Be in South Bend later. Morrison's Island near Fort Wayne will become a summer resort with cottages and improvements after a civil survey.
Dr. M. K. Kreider with Dr. W. B. Kreider performed a delicate operation on Dorothy Shirk a five year old girl from Bloomington Illinois. Dorothy had suffered convulsions for several years and was brought here this week placed under the care of Kreider Bros with the expectation of a full recovery.
Rev. E. I. Davie pastor of the Tecumseh Presbyterian Church died suddenly of apoplexy while dressing for an early devotional at the Winona Bible Conference. He was fifty five and a widely known figure in the Nebraska synod. The body will be moved to his old home in Tecumseh.
A 40 year old man Charles Brant died after taking morphine at Mrs. John Booker’s home in Pierce Ton on Monday afternoon, dying at 8:30 pm. In Warsaw Bryant Waseeen bought eight grains of morphine at a local drug store on Monday forenoon.
A child was born to Mr and Mrs Anthony Zdankus, Polish Russian residents of Mishawaka. The newborn weighed sixteen pounds at birth and measured eighteen inches in head circumference with proportionately large limbs and body.
Vesey is directing itown crews in response to recent hold ups and aims to make arrests soon.
The Columbia City Post reports signs Hastings Hess shows mental instability after a Saturday shooting. It notes his odd home behavior including misreading noon as evening and telling visitors “we’re all crazy here.” Editor J W Adams argues Hess is sane despite public doubt.
Goshen City ball squad departed by carryalls for a planned afternoon matchup in Syracuse. Rain likely postponed the game. Pitcher Jacobs from Napahee and Huff of Bremen join the lineup with Dewey in right field. Local supporters or auto trips noted. Mae Doteen of Elkhart to umpire Milford Goshen game tomorrow.
Mesers and Mesdames Arthur Green wood and C Culp hosted a six o'clock dinner for about a dozen guests in honor of Mr and Mrs Leo Austin. Attendees included Henry Widner Joseph Gilts Ella Delcamp Ruth Miller Bertha Miller Ina Culp and others from Goshen and Elkhart. Catherine Smiley hosted Millersburg friends at Prairie View farm yesterday and several local groups met at Mrs Jease Miller, Mrs Ed Dalke, and Mrs Alva Hamilton's homes for sewing and club activities.

John J. Kinney of Kinney & Co. Angola lists assets of 204740.12 and liabilities of 159567.77 in bankruptcy filing. Funeral of Mrs. Lydia A. Richards set for Waterford tomorrow afternoon with friends leaving at 2 00 from the house.
Early today Sheriff Manning investigated a hospital incident where Fred Hess an insane blackmailer concealed a case knife in his bed and briefly endangered nurse Charles Brady. Hess showed heightened insanity but later improved as the will of Frederick B Pratt of Elkhart was probated with 60 percent to his widow and 40 percent to his sister.
Ervin H Finch former head book keeper sues the firm for slander in New York State Court. Finch alleges unjust methods while Douglas Lacey Co claims only 3 million of stock sales out of 28 ventures and cites dividends and projected returns amid several failed companies. Local Goshen residents own stock in these firms.

Emily Pence born August 1824 in Rockingham County Virginia died August 14 1903 aged 79 years 6 days. She married Henry Pence in 1842 and had four children two survived John Pence Millersburg and William F Pence Middlebury. They moved to LaGrange County Indiana in 1850 where she died with her husband predeceased by 33 years. She belonged to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Milleraburg for 35 years. Funeral at Forest Grove church conducted by Rev. Alex MacLaughlin from Hebrews 4:9 followed by burial beside her husband.

Thieves entered a room at the Columbia hotel and took $34 from a six year old child named Caria Myoom. A dog bite was reported but the child will recover.
