A. E. Brownell aged about 65, a longtime Goshen resident and traveling salesman for Superior Ladder Co., was found dead on his porch at 210 East Clinton Street at 3 pm by Sears Gardner. Heart disease was noted. coroner called. He leaves wife and three daughters, with funeral arrangements to be announced.

O. freight train struck an automobile at Maiden crossing near Valparaiso Indiana killing Mrs J E Small 42 of Walla Walla Washington and seriously injuring four others including Mrs Lester Spooner and Lester Spooner Jr of Kouts Ind The victims were recovering at local hospitals last night with multiple injuries and broken limbs.
Joe Kramer formerly of Goshen sold his stake in the Lakeville grain elevator run with his brother in law and plans to move his family to Goshen. He had run a modern elevator and previously operated a saloon in the same room now housing Mor Rice and 10 cent store. He intends to start new business in Goshen.
An Indianapolis dispatch notes a further $50 000 gift raising the total to $100 000 to the national prohibition party. Donors Mr and Mrs John P Catlin of Johnstown Florida arrived from Chicago, where they completed arrangements for transferring Florida real estate valued at that amount. The gifts are to form the nucleus of a $1 000 000 fund to finance the party nationwide.
The fifth annual Redpath chautauqua in Goshen opened yesterday at Rogers Band park with Killarney Girls as the main attraction. William Rainey Bennett lectured on The Man Who Can. Madame Julia Claussen will close the program next Thursday with a Chicago Grand Opera song recital joined by Pierre Henrette and Marcel Charlier.

Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Buttenbender were killed near Elyria Ohio when an N C C east bound Twentieth Century train struck their auto. They formerly lived in Fort Wayne and Mrs. Buttenbender was once Stella Grout. The couple were returning from a community picnic.
County health officer Dr. D L Miller visited Bristol yesterday afternoon to establish a strict quarantine for infantile paralysis. The patient is five year old Lucretia Warner staying with her aunt Mrs Fred App. The case is described as very mild.
The New York Central Railroad announces a perfected process to remove hidden flaws in steel rails, aiming to prevent train wrecks. The program reduced rail breaks on its lines from one in 600 to one in 142000, developed by N G staff under P H Dudley after four centuries of research by Mr Dudley.
The Flectri City band of Sturgis and the Citizens band of Lagrange combined for a concert in Sturgis drawing 3000 attendees. They will perform next Thursday night Aug 4 in Lagrange with a record crowd anticipated.
In Lagrange a movement seeks to stop the county auditor from placing a township tax levy of 20 cents per $100 on the duplicate claiming illegality. The levy would raise about $1,000 in the town of Lagrange.
A South Main street city car was disabled shortly after 1 PM when a fuse burned out near Clinton street. The 1 45 PM Northern Indiana interurban car assisted by pushing the disabled car to the sheds at the interurban station.

The Winona Assembly closed Thursday after a highly successful run led by soprano Ernestine Schumann-Heink. The renowned contralto proved the event’s strongest drawing card, drawing large crowds and praising performances throughout the week.

Charles Horner, charged with wife desertion, was located in Detroit, Michigan, and taken into custody by deputy sheriff B. F. Leader of Elkhart. Horner had disappeared last Memorial Day from Goshen and was last seen near 216 North Eighth Street with his dinner pail. His wife Vera Juday-Horner, daughter of Wesley Juday, has remained with her father since the disappearance.
The L. J. Brooks Insurance Agency in Goshen, the city’s oldest, founded in 1886, is transferred to George P. Rowell. Rowell, with prior Goshen and Houston experience, will run the office at 111 Fast Lincoln avenue while Mr. Brooks shifts full time to his fuel business.
Blumberg and Hershfield have completed a modern junk shop on East Madison near the Big Four tracks and will occupy it in a few days. The facility features offices at the front and a railroad switch permitting direct loading from the shop. Al Etline oversees the junk department with experience in paper and hide handling. The firm previously operated in the Nejdig building on South Main Street after earlier sites at Main and Madison. Carl Blumberg and Abe Hershfield manage the business.
