President Wilson invites railroad leaders to a conference to resolve the threatened strike situation. Details will be discussed to reach a settlement as tensions ease and negotiations proceed.
Railroad presidents accepted President Wilson’s invitation for a Washington conference as the threat of a nationwide strike looms. Five presidents traveled from Chicago to Washington, while managers refuse the eight hour day demand. Arbitration may settle some disputes though employees favor it.
Indianapolis Aug 17 Clyde Willis editor of a Waterloo Indiana newspaper has been chosen by Indiana Republicans to run the speakers bureau for the upcoming campaign. He will organize campaign speakers and coordinate public addresses through the party network.
Roy Pettitt a 35 year old man was shot and killed on a downtown Mt Clemens street by his wife who was arrested at the scene. The motive and further details were not disclosed.
A Culver Military Academy Black Horse troop member bathing at Cripplegate Heights, Tippecanoe Lake, was robbed of his money and small items after leaving clothes in the bath house. Small boys at the resort were suspected. some articles were recovered, but the money remains missing. The cadet alleged the items were planted as part of a frame-up.
David Meloy of Kosciusko county died at his Van Buran township home near Syracuse on Wednesday morning about 8:30. He was over 81 years old and left an estate valued at about 25000. Funeral arrangements and time to be announced Friday.
All nine people injured in the Foster automobile wreck near Westville La Porte County Monday night are reported recovering. Local hospital officials said the patients ranged in age with no serious complications noted so far. The accident occurred when the car left the roadway and struck a guardrail, authorities reported.
About 100 men are employed by Cripe and Seaman in Elkhart county highway work. Henry Cripe of Goshen and Lawrence Seaman of Frankfort formed a partnership and won bricklaying contracts from Goshen east along East Lincoln avenue and at Zinn school house on Millersburg road. William Cain of Frankfort handles the McCullough farm area, with delays noted in summer but progress continuing. Brooks Construction Co. of Fort Wayne targets West Lincoln avenue completion within sixty days. Elkhart county is claimed to be pursuing more permanent highway improvements than any other Indiana county of 92.

Grant a three and a half month old infant from three and a half miles south of Nappanee died. Remains buried in North Union cemetery with Rev A Young officiating. Stanley infant son of Mr and Mrs William Stanley of Osolo township near Elkhart died after brief illness. Surviving are parents and three sisters.
Carl G Fisher of Indianapolis, personal representative of Gov Ralston, attended a Washington conference of state highway officials and Agriculture Department representatives. They discussed distribution of federal funds for road building and opposed arbitrary geographic allocation. Each project likely to be judged on merit, not geography.
The West Liberty Milk Condensing Company of Goshen was incorporated in Indianapolis with a 50000 capital stock. Directors are Paul E Whitmer Daniel H Gerig and Walter B Christopher all of Goshen. The firm aims to build a milk condensing plant at West Liberty Ohio with buildings to start in September and occupancy planned for January 1 1917. Edward Neidig Goshen deputy postmaster will become active manager.
The Fifth Annual Red Path Chautauqua opens at Ers' Band Park Grounds with speakers and events announced, inviting community attendance and showcasing regional culture and education programs.
The Redpath Chatauqua in Goshen opens with the Killarney Girls in Irish song and Miss Rich in impersonations. William Rainey Bennett will lecture at 8 pm on The Man Who Can after a musical prelude by the Killarney Girls. Morning and afternoon sessions feature Miss Nelle Jewell and the Weatherwax Brothers with Charles Stelzle speaking in the evening on The Church and the Man Outside.
A New York Central limited train struck a car at a grade crossing in Elyria Ohio last night killing five passengers aboard the auto. The deceased include Mrs C H Buttenbender Mrs J E Emerit Mrs J C Conaway Mrs J E Welsh and Co H Buttenbender.
A six year old South Bend boy named Charles Chase died after his ten year old cousin Russell Hosier fired a loaded 22 caliber Stevens target rifle at him from under a bed. The accident occurred at Richard Frankel's home as Chase chased Hosier through the house. Chase died six minutes after being taken to Epworth hospital.
Figures show a roughly $1000 deficit in the Redpath chautauqua fund with fifty guarantors each assessed $20 through eight admission tickets. Some have sold tickets, others will pay the amount personally. Last year a $5 per guarantor assessment occurred for the first time in Goshen. In South Bend this season ticket sales surpassed prior records.
Earl Beck, who trained at Goshen grounds, leaves with his string to travel fairs in Northern Indiana, Southern Michigan, and Ohio. Charles M. Sandmeier of South Bend killed himself with a revolver while his wife visited Chicago. He was a carpenter with Indiana Lumber Co, in middle age, and married a second time with no children. The gun carried a price tag and his wife arrived from Chicago last night.
A Ban ta Coppes Schaefer reunion drew 250 people at Rogers band park with talk of hosting next year at Elkhart. The Thomas reunion drew over 500 from Ohio Michigan and Illinois, prompting extra tables. Speakers included Rev C B Thomas H L Thomas and Aldo J Simpson. A ball game and children's events accompanied the day.
Four Millersburg men giving aliases Joe Eiman Ed Eiman John Doe and George Edson were arraigned in Justice Scott s court on intoxication charges filed by Bert Lantz. All pleaded guilty with fines of 11.35 8.85 15.25 and 15.35 respectively and arrangements to pay. Villagers were shocked by the quartet s actions.
The Maple City band boys elected Cecil Brown as president Robert Weaver as vice president and Russell Neff as secretary treasurer. Under leader Mr Grove Will perform a free public concert in the near future.

Goshen resident Mana Robert Wells, once a star at South Bend Central as a catcher, has signed with the Toledo organization of the American Association. Wells is the brother-in-law of Goshen's David Murphy, and has previously played locally with Elkhart Blue 6x at various times.
Local inventor John Boyts and W. B. Cole secured a patent for a gasoline saving device manufactured in Elkhart. The article notes strong early demand and claims the device increases miles per gallon. Stiver, superintendent of construction, notes the road expense is borne by Elkhart Jackson Clinton and Benton townships.
John Leaderer son of Mr and Mrs Charles Leaderer of North Second errest North Bend seriously hurt when he fell from his bicycle while delivering South Bend Tributes on Emerson street.
The New York City group will operate an excursion to Cedar Point on Sunday August 27 with a fare of $1.75. Several hundred people are expected to take advantage of the low rate as hopes for a $2 Sunday Chicago excursion are abandoned. In past years local baseball fans would go to Chicago to see the Cubs and White Sox.
Mrs Ethel Sherwin Burt of Chicago formerly of Goshen daughter of Dc D Sherwin is under contract with vaudeville manager W S Butterfield to stage a style show for the Butterfield circuit in Michigan opening Kalamazoo on Sunday Sept 17. She is in Chicago now engaging girls for the enterprise and recently appeared at Bismarck Gardens Chicago.
Word from Fort Wayne says Berced Korbly, state chairman, would be unable to attend the meeting at Robinson Park next Saturday due to illness. Hon Albert H. Sahm of Indianapolis, a noted German leader, will fill the vacancy.

In Warsaw on August 17, Lawrence Crist, 11, and Arthur Stanford, 8, drowned while near Pine Lake. Their mothers, Mrs. Elmer Crist and Mrs. W Stanford, were rescued after nearly drowning. Tommy Moor retrieved the boys. Daniel Daisy saved the women. The Crist girl escaped.
The Interstate Commerce Commission ruled that shipping charges by New Jersey, Indiana and Illinois railroads for moving cars from Singer Mfg Co. South Bend plant to Grand Trunk and Wa Bash lines about 12 miles away are not excessive. The case centered on a short line serving a single plant, concluding Singer subsidiary earnings were not excessive and rebates were not granted.
