Allied forces press on in Roye area with French and British advances threatening German hold as aerial activity drops in other western sectors. Demary and Tarvillers reported near British lines northwest of Roye with French movement west and southwest of Roye on a two and a half mile front.
Reports from Baltimore indicate United States Senator Ollie James of Kentucky is in very ill condition and death is expected. James is known locally for a Democratic speech he delivered in Elkhart years ago.
Indiana trails the 1500 quota for student nurse reserve with only 209 applications. Ice shortage worsens in Indianapolis with shipments still sent to dealers and local production 200 tons below daily demand.
The annual harvest meeting of the Church of the Brethren in Gravelton will be held at the church next Sunday. Rev. Kreider of Elkhart is scheduled to preach or participate in the service.
Amsterdam reports an official Berlin statement noting the emperors at German main headquarters demonstrated the complete agreement between Germany and Austria Hungary.
Washington August 16 Provost Marshall General Crowder issued a statement urging all male citizens who have turned 21 since June 5 to appear before local boards to register for military service under Act 24. Exemption claims will be handled later during questionnaire steps and those away on registration day must ensure their card reaches their home board by August 24 or seek local board guidance.
Paris reports from morning papers that total German losses from the start of the war through July 1918 are about 6,000,000. This includes 1,400,000 killed by early March and an additional 120,000 killed from March 27 to June 17.
The Brazilian motorship Madrugada of 1 613 tons was sunk by a German submarine off the American coast. The crew were rescued by another vessel and landed at an Atlantic port, a loss reported to insurance circles.

Also noted, Calvin Rogers Willis Eby Earling Evenson and Jason Rensberger left Goshen for Indianapolis to train as automobile mechanics at the Chamber of Commerce school, sent by the local draft board.

Light rainfall early this morning breaks about a three week drought relief, easing heat and dry spell. Much fall corn has suffered. local rains helped some corn to be saved, while potatoes are expected to be very scarce in this section.
The Northern Indiana Railway announces wage increases effective today. Interurban pay rises from 26-35 to 30-40 cents per hour while city scale moves from 25-30 to 28-33 cents. The interurban rise follows a conference with employee representatives and manager R. R. Smith, and the city raise reflects fairness after the interurban boost.
Madrid Aug 16 Spain cites Germany's response to its note on the torpedoing of a Spanish vessel. Foreign Minister Gato announced dispatch of the note dated Aug 7 and the government says Germany has not fully honored Spain's neutrality. About 25 dollars was netted for the local Red Cross chapter yesterday afternoon from a baseball game at Rogers band park. A slab duel between Belmont Method and Earl Leonard ended 5 to 5 in the fifth inning before Cal Blue relieved Leonard, showing early promise. The Fat outfield of Drake Neidig and Seaman impressed with long-drive fielding.

Mrs Martha Buss Worthly aged 73 died this morning at 9 at her home in Orlando Florida. A former Goshen resident she is survived by husband two brothers George Roscoe of this city James Roscoe of DuBois City PA and one sister Mrs Jack Wemsiley who was in Orlando at the time of death. Funeral services will be held in Orlando Sunday morning.
Miss Stella Keck, a maid at Marvin Coppes residence in Nappanee, suffered a broken arm after falling down the cellar steps at the Coppes home.
The Kelly Motor Co has sold a new Ford touring car to Jesse Greenawalt.
The Democratic state committee held an enthusiastic session in South Bend with active discussion and multiple speakers. Attendees praised party unity and outlined goals for upcoming events and campaigns.

Dr W E Stone president of Purdue University announced all students enrolled or registering this fall may enlist upon arriving at the university be furloughed immediately and continue studies until they reach military age or complete courses. A ten year old boy and a seven year old girl from an orphanage in Mishawaka were brought to the Metz home. The girl was diagnosed with diphtheria by Dr. Hoy Yee and placed under care. She is reported to be improving.
The condition of John J. Sheridan infant son of Mr and Mrs John W Sheridan is very critical at their home 420 East Lincoln Avenue. An electric materials company displays interesting devices in their window.
Frost and droughts in June July and August caused major losses to Goshen planters. Estimated totals run to several thousand dollars with one renter reporting losses of at least 200 dollars as crops froze and drought burned remaining plants. Prices for seeds and plants were unusually high this year.
The Inter-State Fair, the fourth annual Exposition of St Joseph Valley farms, will run September 10 to 14 at Springbrook park South Bend. FE Mathews, president, leads a capable team to surpass prior fairs with a $15 000 racing purse and near $25 000 in total premiums and prizes drawing top racing talent and farm shop civic exhibits.
President R. G. McLaurin heads the Students Army Training Corps with a civilian staff as the War Department pushes for college based military instruction. On July 15 three camps at Plattsburg San Francisco and Fort Sheridan opened a sixty day course for 7000 faculty and student participants to train for army and navy roles.
Mrs Inez Mary Bardo 32 wife of John M Bardo died at home in Bristol during an epileptic seizure causing her head to hang over a wood box leading to strangling. Her husband found three children aged up to three in the house. Coroner Holde man held an inquest. Survived by husband three children Alice William Samuel and two sisters Mrs Vercedius and Mrs Replogie.
Deputy Game Wardens Emanuel Click and James Matthews escaped serious injury when their car left the road and went into a ditch near Wolfe lake. They were en route from Fort Wayne to the city. Matthews resides at 623 South Eighth Street in Goshen.
Dr. C. R. Bassler and Miss Inez Cu dahy of Elkhart were married in Warsaw. Bassler, formerly part owner of the Bassler and Grossnickle hospital in Elkhart, recently closed. Cu dahy served as head nurse at the institution.
Very few apples will be harvested in this section as cold weather and limited fruit set reduce yields. Growers monitor trees and anticipate alternate crops or delayed picking depending on forecasts.
Twenty four year old Sergt D B Studebaker son of Lucy A Studebaker of Jacksonville Florida and formerly of Goshen is in aviation camp training at Fort Bliss Texas in the signal corps He enlisted over a year ago and has been transferred from Fort Sill to Fort Bliss writing home he says he is pleased with military life and has been rapidly advanced and expects to be overseas soon.
William Jennings Bryan will attend the Winona Bible Conference for the full ten days from August 16 to 25. He will deliver addresses on specified dates and the program features prominent speakers such as Bishop Nicholson Griffith Thomas I W Kemp W E Biederwolf Bob Jones Helen Barnes and Mel Trottter. The event promises about 150 notable addresses and sermons led by religious leaders daily.
George McBeth a 19 year old from Sturgis Michigan is in county jail awaiting Sheriff Sanford’s return from Imperial Nebraska. He attracted attention in Bristol for eccentric行为 and was found resting along railroad tracks near the New York Central station. Initial reports of draft evasion were false. McBeth is described as somewhat demented and likely to be released after the sheriff’s return.
Harris and Son of Chicago who bought the Valley Traction Co line between Elkhart and Goshen at receiver sale moved a large force to Bristol to wreck the property being junked. The Bristol town board and the company dispute the right of way condition, objecting to the corduroy road. N Harris of Chicago and A D Ogborn of Lagrange were summoned to Bristol for a conference.
J. F. Bobilya of Vicksburg Michigan purchased the Lincoln Highway Cafe on North Main Street from Cripe and Seamans. He will assume charge of the business Monday morning. W. W. Poyser acted as broker in the transaction.
Beaton township farmer Thomas Brock presented a tomato weighing one pound three ounces. The unusual produce attracted local attention at the county fair scales and prompted spectators to speculate on heirloom varieties and growing conditions.

Anderson Ind August 16 wages rise for Union Traction Co employees. Trainmen get four cents more per hour with about 300 men affected. Company street car operators see two cents. Interurban lines gain 30 to 40 cents per hour by service length and city workers 24 to 30 cents per hour.
John Billman reports from Wakarusa a yield of 99 bushels per acre on a nine acre oat field threshed for Bert Morris and an average of 89 bushels per acre from a 4 1/4 acre field.
A poker game was discovered in a flourishing condition inside a vacant house in Indianapolis. Authorities noted the scene as found and did not report any injuries or arrests. Local officials caution about hazards in unoccupied properties.
