President Harding may seek government protection for railroads after abandoning mediation in the nationwide strike. Big Four labor leaders meet in Washington while train service men strike, leaving west coast lines stranded amid scattered violence reports.
President Harding will present the rail strike situation to Congress and the nation within 48 hours after cabinet talks and consultations with congressional leaders. Rail unions rejected the last settlement proposal and non striking unions aim to continue mediation efforts.
Tanders of railroad labor groups announce rejection of the president’s final settlement proposal. They say mediation talks between railroad executives and the four brotherhoods continue. A Washington meeting keeps leaders in place to pursue contact with executives as talks progress.
Idaho Senator Borah declares the upcoming winter will strain national patience as rail and coal strikes worsen. He, as senate labor chair, argues against advancing the soldier bonus bill citing severe transport and coal problems, warning of damage to farmers and croppers in the West.
Goshen undertakings and planned summer expansions total about $400 000 according to contractor figures. Few new homes rise. many improvements proceed. Minnie Culp of near Foraker filed for divorce from Noble Culp in circuit court. She seeks custody of their three year old son Willard and alimony of 85 per week. They married June 16 1907 and separated August 8 last. She alleges repeated abuse and that he mortgaged their home to buy liquor.
Goshen Republicans opened their 31922 campaign with a first meeting in Stonex hall last night. United by speakers Congress man Andrely J. Hickey of Laporte and E. M. Morris of South Bend district chairman, with Mrs. Perry Beck of Elkheart district vice chairman and B. M. Hoover of Elkhart county chairman present.
White Transit of Elkhart announces a new bus route through Goshen effective tomorrow to avoid conflicts with preferential streets rules. Busses depart Fifth and Jefferson and Alderman hotel at set times, routing via Pike Third Clinton Fifth Jefferson to link to the Likhart Goshen One.
Edward Myers, 51, a Wabash County farmer, committed suicide by hanging at his home near North Manchester. His body was found this morning. Surviving are his wife, a son, a daughter, his father Henry Myers, 80, and three grandchildren. Henry Myers formerly lived in Jackson township, Elkhart county. The death notice was received in Goshen by Mrs. A. J. Pickering.
The Willian Tuffts memorial will be dedicated at Bonneyville cemetery three miles east of Bristol under the Elkhart I. Q. M. lodge. Sedwick of Martinsville Ind will deliver the address. The date was moved from August 20 to September 17 due to his scheduling conflict.
Levi Kime of Goshen was arrested and jailed on a warrant sworn by A. B. Martin for an alleged assault on Martin's seven year old daughter. The alleged act is said to have occurred yesterday and Kime was to be arraigned in city court this afternoon before Mayor Rimpler.
Classified line notes a job solicitation from the Democrat party's employment office with a contact phone number 57 for interested applicants.
County commissioners plan a 1925 budget of 255 008 dollars for county expenses, 63 000 dollars more than this year. Major increases come from about 86 0000 in road costs and the fund for orphans and the poor, offset by a 20 000 dollar cut in election expenses due to no county election next fall. The 1925 estimates exceed 1921-25 levels in several areas, with emphasis on major funds and appropriations.
Yaletta Hart, three-year-old daughter of Mr and Mrs Ray Hart, living near Hudson and formerly of Kendallville, died from burns after her clothing caught fire from a lighted match. The mother left the room briefly and returned to find the child engulfed in flames with clothing almost burnt away.
The forecast calls for fair skies tonight with continued warmth into Wednesday. Temperatures remain elevated across Indiana, with mild evenings and no significant precipitation expected.
The 49th fair begins Wednesday with a four day program at the grounds. The schedule lists pace and trot races each day featuring drivers and horses such as Jack Dorr, Donnie D, and Diamond D. Purse amounts range up to $400 with multiple entries including Sweet Susan and Beautiful Baby.
Opening tomorrow morning the 49th Elkhart county fair continues over Saturday night with large attendance expected. Exhibits fill grounds including poultry cattle and horses. seventy five race horses and all classes are present. Balloon ascensions planned with fireworks, plus Auto Polo and races on Saturday. Thursday Elkhart day features Penn's Saxophone Light. Races feature 2 30 pace and 2 24 trot with 400 dollar purses. Officials listed for speed events and department heads announced for livestock, arts and agriculture.
Ralph Rimmerman of Kendallville was arrested in South Bend after police discovered the automobile he was driving lacked a tail light. The incident is described as a traffic stop leading to the arrest.
Indiana Governor McCray said mining at Staunton will continue under guard protection until Indiana operators are ready to reopen. He added that Cleveland strike talks will not affect Indiana production given the small share of state tonnage in the meeting.
The Rhoades Poelodor Realty company of South Bend has no definite plans for improving the old Exchange building site at Michigan street and Colfax avenue. The structure was destroyed by fire early Sunday morning.
Albert Williams a 68 year old carpenter from Albany was killed when he fell from the reef of a barn on a Dunkirk area farm yesterday. The accident occurred in Hartford County and authorities reported no immediate survivors beyond his uneventful passing.
The Senate backed 90 percent ad valorem duties on laces and 72 percent on fabrics after failed attempts to restore Underwood rates. Four Republicans backed lower duties while one Democrat opposed. Committee rates on motion picture films were approved, and cameras face a 20 percent duty.
Kenneth Holdread ten year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Holdread of Middlebury street suffered facial bruises when the Ford dairy truck driven by Robert Steckley collided with a car driven by A. A. Bailey at Madison boulevard and Seventh street. Holdread was thrown from the truck but others escaped injury. Police cite confusion over preferential streets rules and state right of way law as cause.
South Bend reports condemnation proceedings against L. A. Buseh, manager of the Springbrook park roller coaster, after an inspection deemed the ride unsafe. A timber fell, killing Mrs. Clara T. D. Crouse on Saturday night while she rode the coaster.
In Calenico on August 15, federal officers seized about 100 gallons of liquor. They ordered it dumped into the gutter, where the sun's 120 degree heat caused it to foam and ignite on contact with the pavement.
A wage scale accord between miners and operators is expected to be signed today after a conference in Cleveland. A formal call for a meeting in Philadelphia tomorrow will be issued to discuss terms with anthracite operators.
In Cleveland on August 15 the operators and miners formally approved an agreement to end the soft coal strike that had persisted since April 1. Provisions take effect immediately with a joint conference expected to formalize signing this afternoon.

Indiana mines near Indianapolis will start after ratification, adding 2.5 million tons annual capacity.
