In Rome on August 15, Pope Benedicts peace proposal was written entirely in his own handwriting. He consulted Cardinal Gasparri and other papal officials in drafting the document. Italian papers praise the appeal as impressive and concrete, while noting Entente powers need not feel compelled to accept it.
Washington Aug 15 The Pope Benedict peace proposal had not been received by the government yet but Secretary Lansing said the AP published summary largely matches the unofficial outline before him. Allies likely to reject it in current form and may refuse to consider it, though they will restate war aims. The proposal is given attention because of its high source.
In Petrograd on August 15, the former emperor Nicholas of Russia and his family are moved by ordinary train rather than the imperial train. He appears low in spirits while Empress Alexandra seems pleased by the prospect of a change. Announcement will follow once destination reached.
American troops marched through London on August 15 with reviews by Ambassador Page and King George at Buckingham Palace. Crowds lined streets decorated with American and British flags as civilians, British troops, and wounded servicemen cheered the soldiers on their way to the front.

Yesterday marked packing up day at Ft Benjamin Harrison for newly commissioned officers. Today they depart for brief leave before reporting to their assigned commands. Most take leave through Aug 28, with an extension sought to Aug 29. Names listed include Jack P Frankenstein and Dan M Spohn among the second lieutenants.
Washington Aug 15 suffrage banner protests persist with pickets at the White House grounds and at La Fayette Park headquarters. Crowds tear banners down as fast as they are raised.
Despite no registrants examined today, an additional list of exemptions was released noting holders with dependents. The district must provide 134 men, one more than previously ordered, with government officials to review numerous exemption claims soon. Names include Ernest Cline, Elmer Wise, Alphonse Emmons, Fred Davidhizer, and many others.
The national guard division, representing Indiana and 25 states plus the District of Columbia, will be mobilized at Mineola, Long Island, at a camp named Albert L. Mills in honor of the late Brigadier General Mills. Samuel A. Peck of Goshen and Baery D. of Fort Wayne are slated to ship to France with the unit.

Warden aged 71 a longtime Elkhart County resident died this noon at his home 109 South Eighth Street after a period of illness He had served as county farm superintendent and recently retired He is survived by his wife a daughter Mrs Joseph Keeley of Chicago and a son Olney Warden of Duluth Minn Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
Eleven car loads of strikebreakers traveling from Chicago to an eastern point passed through Elkhart and seized the Union News Co stand at the N Y C station. Candy and cigarettes valued at 5 were stolen during large bill transactions. Some robbers took advantage of the money exchange. Toledo police were advised and a settlement is expected.
Miss Helen Jeaneret, daughter of City Clerk Jeaneret of Ligonier, named kindergarten instructor at Three Rivers Michigan. She recently graduated from Moment Hall in Chicago and is noted as a known figure in this city.
Within a short time 12000 soldiers of the new national army will be quartered at the Battle Creek cantonment detailing a large mobilization and relocation of troops to the Michigan site for training and reception.
About 25 residents in Elkhart have formed the Addubon cub club to pursue birding and nature interests. Members meet to observe local species, share tips, and promote wildlife appreciation in the community.

Mrs. Frank Pineski, wife of a farmer, claimed her husband swore at her during milking. Pineski testified he directed remarks at the cow, not his wife. The judge ruled the cow a lady and fined Pineski $21.90 including costs.
Mr and Mrs Fred Mehnert celebrate their golden wedding anniversary at home No 418 8 Main Street after living in the city for over 41 years. They are well known in the locality.
Samuel Peoples resigned from his post as foreman at the NC freight depot after more than two decades of service. He had spent over 21 years with the company, stepping down from his long tenure.
Goshen's second lieutenant of Battery D, Fort Wayne, First Indiana Field Artillery, is to depart for France with the first militia troops sent from the United States. Washington officials announce the Indiana unit is part of the National Guard division to enter active service, commanded by Brigadier General W A Mann. Departure date unknown. Two Goshen men have already served in France as US enters WWI: Wal ler K R Brothers as naval gunner and Floyd Eaton in the aviation corps.
The Goshen Moose Lodge will take a Sunday excursion via the Nor ind Interurban to Michigan City for the annual Moose Day homecoming. Cars are chartered to transport Go shenites. city officials back the event as one of the largest celebrations locally with free attractions. Mooseheart Bays' band will perform and Wi T Giles, the supreme secretary, is among the speakers. Special cars leave Goshen at 7:00 a.m. Tickets are available from lodge members or club rooms.
W. S. Stacy Bowman ex South Bend Central pitcher and Rogers Greys player signs for 1918 with the Toledo club in the American association. His brother Abe Bowman has been a Toledo pitcher for two years.
Frank F. Yoder, president of the Elkhart County Fair association, announces the booking of Big Ben's Wild West show as a special attraction for the fair in the third week of September. The management vows to surpass all previous exhibitions with thorough preparations.
Mrs Emma Lehman who has run a Yooming house in the former Mrs F P Abbott residence on East Lincoln Avenue for about two years will vacate the premises on October 1. Mr and Mrs A C Loomis will move into the location after that date.
The food administration forms a $50,000,000 corporation to buy enough of the 1917 wheat crop to stabilize U S prices and to supply allied purchases of wheat and flour. The organization will operate at principal wheat terminals with usual dealers and fix prices by a committee to guard against losses. Flour mills will gain assured supplies at government prices.

Missiongly Society of First Brethren church meets Mrs Arnold 6208 Eighth street Thursday afternoon with picnic lunch after lesson and guest invitations. Mrs P M Binkley hosts Ladies Aid of First English Lutheran Thursday afternoon.
Police raided a Three Rivers blind pig house where Bran son Dean fled via a side door. Found were whiskey and beer and a claim that intoxicants were bought at Elkhart saloons. Traffic between small Michigan towns and Elkhart is noted as unusually heavy.
Michigan City grocer Charles Yattim is missing. He was last seen with between $500 and $600 and planned a trip to collect a debt. Local authorities seek information about his whereabouts and the circumstances of his disappearance.
