Fred Hess, about 21, unmarried son of Whitley County residents, fired twice at his head during questioning over a $3,000 blackmail demand linked to the Walker-Lewis buggy firm. He survived and was taken to Becknell hospital, with doctors saying recovery is likely. Hess had earlier posed as a detective and registered under an assumed name in Goshen.
