Drake Elkhart treasurer dies by self inflicted gunshot
Edward E. Drake 48, Elkhart county treasurer, shot himself with a 32 calibre revolver in his home at 401 South Main after months of ill health and mental strain. He had struggled with a stomach condition and financial worries from a bank loss. Coroner ruled death by shooting after inquest. Funeral planned for Thursday.

Ladies Have a Runaway in Jefferson Township
Mrs. John Rigney was thrown from a buggy but uninjured when a frightened horse jumped sideways near Bemenderfer schoolhouse while Miss Anna Shellenberger joined her in Jefferson Township. About 40 members of Company G First Regiment I N G left for Indianapolis on the Big Four train for a week in camp. At the last rifle practice before departure three members set high scores to qualify as expert riflemen. Sergt Charles Noel led with 237 points, Lieut Shirley Larimer 235, and Private Everett Herrold 236. Herrold needs one more 1 000 yard record to qualify as an expert. At 800 yards Noel and Larimer scored 88 percent, Herrold 100 percent. At 1 000 yards Noel 88 percent, Larimer 92 percent.

Miss Mary Skinner, famed in Mishawaka society, drowned while rowing with J. C. Miller of South Bend above the Hen Island dam. Both lost control as the skiff went over the 50 foot dam. Miller escaped, Skinner perished in the St. Joseph river.

Chas Maines a 49 year old stationary engineer from Elkhart riding to his niece Mrs Julia Bartletts home north of Elkhart was struck and killed by a Big Four train returning from St Joseph Mich. Witness Samuel Thornton said the engineer blew his whistle but Maines appeared unable to stop. Maines a bachelor with rooms in the Bucklen block carried $11000 life insurance. Remains at Walleys undertaking room. Inquest held by Coroner Dewey.

John Confer aged 68 a farmer of Osolo township died after heat prostration while visiting his niece Mrs Maude Byer. He had long suffered a weak heart and died quickly in the heat. Survived by three brothers and three sisters.

A Wawasee dispatch to the Chicago Tribune reports the property of John McMahon of Goshen known as Ebert's Landing will pass to the Eel River branch of the Christian church. The sale would add a large church presence at Lake Wawasee and eliminate the Lake Side Fishing club. McMahon, who refused comment, is said to have sold for 10000 after spending on improvements and seeking reimbursement. He paid 5000 for the island less than a year ago.
