Rain caused the Farm Betterment Club picnic to be postponed and a meeting held at Middlebury High School. Congressmen Ralph W. Moss and C. F. Marsh spoke on Farm Finance and Rural Betterment, outlining banking reform, warehouse supervision, and vocational agriculture benefits for Indiana farmers.
The C. G. Conn Co. Inc with a capital of 1 million dollars filed articles of incorporation with County Recorder Winterhoff. The papers are voluminous and will incur a large recording fee.
Ernest P. Bicknell, national director of the American Red Cross, told Fort Wayne he expects Europe’s war to drag on until exhaustion of all warring elements and a general compromise with neutral powers aiding peace efforts. He spoke as a guest of his brother C. and Bicknell of the Fort Wayne News.
Monticello August 12 Special Robert Ward 40 is jailed here charged with murdering his wife who died in a February fire. He was arrested on Frank Scott’s farm near Oxford where he had been working since the disappearance. Ward says the wife set the blaze but witnesses plan to testify he beat her before she died.
Solomon Ramsey, 62, a local businessman, is dead after eating toadstools he mistook for mushrooms in Valparaiso. Gus Bornhold, Porter County clerk, and Thomas Heard, the prosecuting attorney, are dying after also ingesting the poisonous fungi.
Two believed cremated in a Valparaiso fire that destroyed Dr. J. A. Ryans racing stable covering about an acre. Authorities report less than 46,000 loss and say Ed Wing and Frank Stade, stable occupants, are believed to have perished. Blaze deemed incendiary in origin.
The Milwaukee Merchants and Manufacturers Association decided to endeavor to obtain the Democratic internal convention for Milwaukee.
In Indianapolis on August 12, Studee Giehhorny upheld 430 of the 48 indictments and scheduled September Tihax as the trial date for Mayor Bell. Additional trials will follow.
A large meeting in Anderson approved routing the Hoosier Dixie Highway from Greenfield in Hancock County to Goshen via county seats including Anderson Marion Wabash and Goshen. Charles J. Allardt of South Bend acquires the Jefferson Theatre and may use Orpheum as the stock title for his vaudeville interests. The Jefferson, built in 1905 and named for Joseph Jefferson, has no intimate link to Goshen despite the actors who performed there. Allardt plans to announce theatre policy and appoint a resident manager.
Robert Lowenstein aged four died after playing with matches in Valparaiso. The incident occurred on August 12, with a special report noting the fatal burn injuries.
A gas oven exploded at the Sidway Mercantile Co plant in Elkhart causing 600 in damage. Thirty window lights broke and a wall bulged. the oven was ruined. Cause unknown. the oven had not been used for 1444 hours. Gas company investigators review the incident.
George M. Witwer of South Bend has succeeded Frederick S. Fish as a director of the Winona Interurban Co. Mr. Fish is a Studebaker son in law.
A special meeting of Goshen lodge No. 798 B P O E will be held tonight to consider a matter of utmost importance to all members.
The C. G. Conn Limited is incorporated with the secretary of state to manufacture musical instruments at Mikhart. Capitalized at $1,000,000 the new company will take over the old business of C. G. Conn. Incorporators are William W. White John M. Fage and George W. Stranh.
The Heber Brothers wagon circus will perform in Leesburg on Wednesday afternoon and night August 18. The event promises a full day of acts under the wagon show format with both matinee and evening performances.
Ellen J. Mc Farren files suit in circuit court against Ira Butt on a promissory note seeking a $500 judgment. The action names Butt as the defendant in the case filed to recover the debt.
Smoke issued from the Pikhart city court room causing excitement as officials investigated a cupboard fire started by a discarded cigar stub igniting umbrella covering.
Rumor of a misreported confession by a farmer near Wakarusa to the Hazel Macklin killing near South Bend in 1914 circulated from Mishawaka but authorities found no substance. Sheriff Thomas was informed by the South Bend Tribune and contacted the Wakarusa sheriff. Associates of the suspect doubt the tale, noting his silence and possible mental distress.
Mrs Stell Campbell is charged with murder after shooting her husband William Campbell at their residence in self defense. He allegedly rushed her room with a baseball bat and an ax threatening to kill her. Preliminary hearing date set by Judge Wirner with burial services noted for Campbell.
The sandal camp meeting of the Mennonite Brethren in Christchurch opened today at Ni nen Fetters grove seven miles southwest of Goshen and seven miles south of Elkhart. Daily services are planned and Sunday programs conclude on August 22. Rev. S. Lambert of Greenville Ohio will headline. Attendance is expected between 5000 and 10000.

George Huffman age 379 suffered severe bruises and head cuts while Carson Kauffman age 19 escaped with minor injuries after a buggy was struck by an unidentified auto in St. Joseph County.

A two year old boy of Mr and Mrs Roy Caldwell 208 West Pike Street pulled a bowl of hot gravy from the stove and was severely scalded on the face neck chest and arms. Medical aid was summoned and the child is believed to recover.
Elkhart county fair management plans the third annual exhibition from August 1 to September 3. Contracts will be made with Goshen City band, Rogers Goshen band, Elkhart Municipal band, and either Nappanee or Wakarusa band, likely Nappanee as they played last year.
