Willialma Leman president of the Wyatt Farmers bank and local churchman says a Mishawaka policeman mistook him for a bootlegger. He was recovering from a nervous shock and a leg ailment while shopping. the encounter left him shaken and under care.
Five hundred farmers from St Joseph county gathered in South Bend to fix milk prices. The dispute centers on what farmers view as unfair imposition on consumers and producers alike.
Celestia Biddle-Pence, 67, widow of William F. Pence, died at her home ten miles east of Goshen after months of cancer. She was born in Shaneville Ohio in October 1891 and married in Lagreese. Surviving are son Arthur, daughters Mrs Ed Risser and Mrs Newton Nusbaum, a brother E A Biddle and sister Mrs Myra Holsinger. Funeral at Grace Lutheran Church south of Middlebury with burial in Forest Grove Cemetery.
Washington reports that the drive against high living costs will extend beyond packers jobbers wholesalers and profiteers to include retailers amid claims of unreasonably high profits.
Clarence Rubies and his seven year old son Charles were fatally struck when a gun exploded during an attempt to use it. The accident occurred at the family farm on the TeKash unity line in Fairfield township. Ty Williams of Kendallville arrived but the boy died before aid could come. Coroner of Dekalb county summoned. Family had moved from Jefferson Gavi to Noble county recently.
Elkhart carpenters on strike seeking a wage increase hold talks with contractors this afternoon to settle the dispute. Six Gosher carpenters belong to the union and twelve will join tomorrow. The railroad switchmen are casting an official strike vote this week.
Associated Press reports Carnegie died today at his summer home near Lenox Massachusetts. Statistics show by June 1 1918 he had given away 550 605 653 in sums from his wealth.
Irene Byron hospital near Fort Wayne dedicated with Gov. Goodrich as chief speaker. A large crowd attended the ceremony. Miss Margaret Wilson of Elkhart and Middlebury appeared as secretary of the Elkhart County Tuberculosis association.
W. J. Goble of 506 South Third Street bought the residence at 510 South Seventh Street from Mrs. Frank Preugh for 2200 dollars and will take possession early in September.

The steel magnate and philanthropist Andrew Carne Gie dies at age 81 after a three day illness at his summer residence. He led major steel ventures and supported numerous charitable causes alongside his family. Born in an industrial era, his career spanned decades of steel innovation.
Lenox Mass August 11 Associated Press Andrew Carnegie steel magnate and philanthropist died at his summer home Shadow Brook after an illness of less than three days of bronchial pneumonia. His daughter Mrs Roswell Miller was unable to reach his bedside in time. His wife and private secretary were at his death. Carnegie born November 25 1837 in Dunfermline Scotland immigrated to the United States in 1848. He rose from a textile mill helper to steel magnate and founded Carnegie Steel Company later merged into U S Steel. In 1901 at age 65 he began giving away most of his fortune. He believed it disgraceful to hold idle wealth.
Robbers drilled open the Crystal theatre office safe in Indianapolis and stole $1000. Authorities say the expert job mirrors recent Indianapolis incidents over the last six months.
Esther Fritzen an 18 year old of Laporte was instantly killed when she stepped in front of a Michigan Central flyer at Grand Beach. Her two companions Lottie Wing and Vera Mays narrowly escaped injury by crossing the track ahead of the train.
Attendance at the Fetters Grove camp meeting near Goshen was very large yesterday. The event began last Thursday and continues through next Sunday with evangelist Jacob Hyzema of Milford as the chief speaker.

The Better Farming Association met at the courthouse Saturday to raise funds to cover a deficit in County Agricultural Agent Metzger’s salary. Attendance was insufficient for pledged support. A follow up meeting is planned in Stonex Hall next Friday at 8 o'clock with hopes of stronger turnout. T. A. Coleman of Purdue University spoke to the gathering.
A Packard touring car from Warsaw driven by J. J. C. Slade with two companions Buddy W L Groth and John Motto struck a Maxwell driven by Mrs Ray Johns at about 11 this morning on Main street. Both cars were northbound. Mrs Johns turned at Lincoln avenue and the Packard sideswiped again. Mrs Johns arranged for repairs funding through Stout of the Trust Co.
Wawas ee residents have enjoyed rides on a Curtis airplane for several days. Pilot David Lindsay flies passengers around the lake for 15 dollars. The Marion trip was brief and Carl Jay accompanied Lindsay.
The Rev. Dr. Mathew Schumacher of Notre Dame was elected president of St Edward's College at a meeting in Austin. A son was born to Mr and Mrs Ed Apt of 419 South Seventh Street, their seventh child.

Elkhart county farmers plan a City park picnic on August 19 with program details to be announced soon. Secretary Taylor of the Indiana Farmers Federation is slated as the principal speaker, per S. O A L Hoover.
Ane L The Specials Hiulda McClella 25 wife of James McClellan of near Brimfield died about 9 30 a m Sunday when the car she rode in went down an embankment and rolled over crushing her chest. Also in the car were Mr and Mrs Glen Smith and their three children plus Mr Smith’s cart. The driver James McClellan steered off course and attempted U turn leading to the crash. Mrs McClellan died at Lake Side hospital. Smith sustained a broken collarbone and scalp wound. one Smith boy broke an arm. another was injured internally. The other child riders had minor injuries. Mrs McClellan’s parents live at Lexington Missouri.
The Garrett railroad shopmen strike ends for now as all crafts vote to resume duties under President Wilson's order. Maintenance of way workers returned Saturday morning and other strikers resumed today, about 500 employees total.
While enroute from a Mishawaka Chinese laundry to his home Emeil Brackevelt lost a pocket book containing 300 dollars. Brackevelt unmarried had drawn the money to send to his aged parents in Belgium.
Train No 23 operated in three sections with the regular passenger section arriving forty five minutes late.

At Buttermilk Point Lake Wawasee Ed Kurta accidentally discharged a target pistol injuring his right ankle. He was driven to Goshen where surgeons located the bullet by X ray and removed it from the opposite side. He rests at his apartments over the Rizzle garage for several days.
In Fort Wayne on August 11 a self styled Comrade Baker spoke at a bolshevik gathering at Weisser Park attended by about 1000 people. He had served eighteen months in the Ohio pen for anti war writings and urged revolution while opposing liberty bonds claiming war profiteering by capitalists.
The Union meeting in Court Park last evening drew a large audience. Dr. Lake of Ekhart delivered the sermon with a fine male quartet. Next Sunday the services move to the chautauqua tent at Madison street school house where Dr. Lyons of Winona Lake will give the address.
