The United States Board of Mediation and Conciliation held the first meeting with four railway brotherhoods and managers of over 100 railways. Unofficially, a general strike seems likely to be averted. Striking demand is eight hour day and time and a half for overtime. managers refuse under any circumstances.
In New London on August 16 workers begin erecting warehouses for cargoes said to be from the Bremen and other German merchant submarines. Reports vary on the Bremen’s fate including sunk captured delayed or nonexistence.
Indianapolis Aug 10 All national guard officers in Indiana who have served as recruiting officers are mustered out following a war department order. Detachments now on the Mexican border will be sent into the state to run the recruiting stations.
In Washington the foreign relations chair Sen Stone sought a confidential copy of the US Danish West Indies treaty. The accord would have the United States pay 25 million dollars to acquire the Danish West Indies. Also noted is John W. Cornell celebrating his 7th birthday in Goshen born August 10 1839 in 1839. The family later moved to Middlebury township and Cornell remains in excellent health.

President Wilson named W. P. G. Harding as governor and Paul Warburg as vice governor of the Federal Reserve Board. Both men are appointed to serve one year each, succeeding Charles Hamlin and Frederick Delano respectively.

C E Johnson and 18 others petition Kosciusko county commissioners to vacate a highway and establish a new one through lands owned by the State of Indiana the Northern Indiana Improvement Co and Elizabeth Shock. The state land hosts the fisheries and game department. Three viewers for the proposed road are requested and the matter will be considered at the September meeting of the commissioners.
Susan Paulus aged 86 of Elkhart County died at home after paralysis. She leaves five children, two sisters, and a Brethren church member. funeral Friday at Elk hart Valley church with burial at South Prairie street cemetery. Gertrude App, 54, widow of Samuel F. App, died in Elkhart after ten weeks illness. she is survived by a daughter, a son, and her mother.
Geo Mason a Millersburg lineman for the American Telephone and Telegraph Company is retiring after 28 years with the firm. He will be eligible for a pension of 87 dollars per month after 30 years of service under current terms.
The death at Omaha of John M. Thurston former U S senator from Nebraska prompts recall that he did not fill a speaking engagement in Goshen during the 1900 campaign when he was billed as the chief orator for a Republican rally.

Special report says 55 year old Ross McCoy shot his wife at their farm near Noblesville. Mrs McCoy was chased across a field before a posse captured McCoy within 30 minutes. He is jailed.
The coroner ruled that Charles E. Iben of California Pennsylvania died after falling from a New York Central freight car in South Bend while he stood on the bumpers selling a cigarette.
A Kuhner Packing Co plant in Muncie burned at 11 30 last night causing an estimated loss of 50000 dollars. Fire crews battled the blaze but the building suffered extensive damage and the cause was not immediately known.
Lester Martin and Raymond Young of Mishawaka sue Floyd Hooten in South Bend Superior Court for 5000 in damages claiming shotgun fire on July 21 wounded them requiring surgeries. Hooten bound over for assault and battery with intent to commit a felony and released on bond after the incident.
E A Gast democratic chairman of the 18th district was summoned before a court of inquiry with Justice T R North and asked about a Warsaw Union article. Glenn Cole accompanying him wrote the piece accusing county officials of lax enforcement and alleging Charles Murray of Lake Wawasee’s Murray hotel served beer to guests. Cole filed an affidavit against Murray for liquor law violations. Murray remains on suspended sentence for operating a blind tiger.
Franklin Garber, a Goshen area farmer, offers a substantial reward for the return of 520 dollars in 20 bills lost after he obtained the money from a Goshen bank to pay a contractor building a Garber residence. The funds vanished after his Saturday trip. he recalls having the money Monday morning.

The south end of the Prairie street brick highway near Elkhart needs repairs as the county commissioners plan inspection. The nine foot wide five mile route, first brick highway in the country, shows depressions at fills due to clay soil. Other area roads, including gravels near Nappanee and East Market street, require labor and material to maintain wear. Concrete roads around Elkhart county are praised as satisfactory.
Zebb Overholt, 38, was found at his brother Henry Overholt's home at 614 South Seventh under a gas attack yesterday afternoon. He was in critical condition but hospital reports say recovery is likely unless complications arise. Overholt has been in poor health and well known locally.
The county board named 12 inspectors for Elkhart township Goshen city for the Monday registration day. The county had 63 precincts at the first election.
Funeral services for 16 year old Nathan Fris toe of Nappanee were held yesterday at the Nappanee M E Church with Rev. Sherman Powell officiating. The body was interred at Bremen, home of the deceased’s mother Mrs J Biggs.
A young farmer from Waka- Tusa was arrested and jailed briefly after passing a worthless check on a local merchant. He claimed ignorance of banking laws and was released on promise not to repeat the offense.
Sol Henoch of Ligonier sells all buggy stock and materials to Montgomery Ward & Co of Chicago. Seven cars were needed to remove the goods, and the Ligonier Refrigerator Co will gain additional space.
