Militiamen to Leave for Indiana State Encampment
First Regiment Indiana National Guard units depart on the 5 48 Big Four train next Monday for Indianapolis to attend the annual encampment. Captain Pease leads about 40 men who will camp ten days, returning August 22 on the 12 17 Big Four train. Elkhart Warsaw and Columbia City companies ride the Big Four, South Bend uses the Vandalia line.

Stutsman Sells 40 Acre Farm Near Middlebury for 3000
Samuel J. Stutsman sold his 40 acre farm three miles southwest of Middlebury and adjoining Rev J C Mehr’s lot to John Beachey near the Forks church for 3000 dollars. He bought with Jacob Pfeiffer Sr adjoining land. Pfeiffer and sons Fred and Henry cleared most of it. Pfeiffer moved there in the 1850s. grandfather of H S K Bartholomew, born on the same farm 43 years ago. Stutsman has lived there since he bought it about forty years ago and will move south due to harsh northern winters.

Lightning destroys barn on M A Olds farm
A barn eight miles south of Elkhart was struck by lightning at 8:40 PM and burned with its contents. The 2,000 dollar loss included 300 bushels of wheat, oats, 30 tons of hay, and farming implements. Neighbors aided in fighting the fire until 1 AM, saving other buildings and crops.
