Newport News dispatch reports the British steamship Argalia sunk by a German submarine. Captain Morris and 10 crewmen are dead. the rest reached Glasgow. It is unclear if any of the lost crew were American. Details are still pending.
Congress may turn itself into a chautauqua to enlighten the country on prosecuting the war vigorously for world democracy and American rights. President Wilson may make some speeches.
After negotiations with Moose lodge officials and Charles Warner over an alleged embezzlement of funds and a $685.75 repayment plan, the talks ended this morning in Justice Fryberger's court when Mrs. Warner did not assist her husband. Warner remains jailed for bond default.

Washington reports the Aug 1 crop forecast showing corn at 2.191 billion bushels, up 67 million from July and 68 million above 1912. Improved yields in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Missouri drive the record, with Elkhart County corn in excellent condition and wheat prospects reduced by spring crop damage.

The weekly official report from Paris notes four vessels of 1600 tons or more and two smaller boats were sunk by submarines during Aug 5 week. Six merchantmen were unsuccessfully attacked. In the period 948 vessels entered French ports and 934 sailed.
Army officials opened an investigation into the deaths of four civilians who were killed during field artillery practice at Little Kennesaw Mountain, about 30 miles from Atlanta, Georgia.

A Goshen youth, 18, enlisted in the U S Army at South Bend recruiting office in May. He serves with Company E R 30th Infantry stationed near Syracuse New York during the state fair period. Other Goshen residents listed include Roy Ate Tin, John and Mary Steele.
A mortuary record reports the death of a person with a July birth date and names surviving relatives including parents and siblings. Leatrice Viones is identified as another child, daughter of AL and Syson, with mention of limited survival after birth and immediate family survivors.

Charles Mutschler, a prominent Mishawaka businessman, died at St Elizabeth's Hospital in Lafayette after an auto crash near La Fayette, Ind. He had been unconscious since Tuesday morning and was 42 years old, born in Mishawaka.
