John Gardner, a farmer near Bristol, reported a masked horse thief in a buggy with a white sheet covering the horse. Neighbors suspect burnt cork to disguise the thief’s features. investigation underway in the Elkhart area.
A Pennsylvania railroad gang moved into Winona Lake and closed a crossing, tearing up the electric line track on the right of way. They constructed a fence at the golf links and removed the section leading to the gravel pit. Winona officials could not stop the work and the outcome remains unclear. The action is said to stem from rivalry with the Big Four.
A church notices page lists services at Fifth Street School building with Rev N H Sheppard at 10:30 am and various sermons, Sunday school, and youth groups. Fifth Avenue M E Church has no sermon due to pastor absence. Lutheran, Christian Science, Baptist, and First Christian Gick Hammond entries outline sermon topics, times, and Sunday School hours with invitations and final notices for August 9 services and no evening service.

Miss Flo Bachelor was feted at a miscellaneous shower hosted by Miss Eloise Ruson, Miss Elsie Wood, and Miss Mary Zook at 115 South Seventh Street. Guests included Mrs. George Fletcher of Toledo and Miss Rose Knefler of Indianapolis. Aug. 10 marriage to Mr. Frank Knight of Urbana, Ohio, announced. Card games and a luncheon for twenty five accompanied the garden flower decor.
An elderly man about 65, claiming Civil War veteran status, narrowly escaped serious injury when he grabbed a grab iron from a moving eastbound freight at the Lake Shore station. He was dragged along the depot pavement before freeing his grip and was later sent to Kendallville for treatment. He suffered facial and arm bruises and profuse bleeding from cuts on both hands.
Alfred Jundt writes Clyde Castetter proposing a Goshen street fair appearance this fall. Jundt, formerly on the Goshen Daily Times staff, was prominent in the Up-to-date Minstrel company organized here years ago.
Prof. Byron J. Bogue resigns after sixteen years as Mishawaka public schools superintendent amid sustained opposition. Critics cite lack of recess for children in both morning and afternoon sessions as a cause, blaming him for introducing the non recreation system.
East bound Lake Shore No. 2 struck Mrs. Edna DeGrover as she picked coal along the tracks in South Bend yesterday. The engine could not stop. engineer Rep Schaffer and fireman Charles Myers were in the cab. Schlatter the alleged divine healer is advertised in South Bend with free exhibitions at the Columbia hotel Sunday at 3 and 7:30 PM.
The Eel River Christian Conference meets in Huntington next Wednesday for its sixtieth annual session. Forty churches, thirty three ministers, four thousand forty nine members, forty Sunday schools serving two thousand five hundred fifty pupils, and twelve Christian Endeavor Societies with about five hundred members comprise the gathering.
Patrons on rural mail route No 4 out of Goshen welcome Frank Hoye as the new carrier replacing a disliked predecessor. President Parfit of the Fall Carnival committee seeks original ideas for the event while Mr Parfitt expresses optimism about a bright carnival prospect. The Metropolitan Insurance Company of New York has purchased American Central's industrial business in a deal completed in Indianapolis.
W J Quinn and L E Perry who bought the Troy Laundry in Newark Ohio have disposed of the plant. The deal occurred last Monday with Marion buyers taking the business and equipment. Perry and Quinn have not decided their next venture possibly returning to Goshen. County Institute instructors meet in Indianapolis to discuss methods for improving county institutes. The late John Gilbert Shanklin’s ashes were sent to Chicago for cremation and will be returned to Evansville to scatter over his parents graves per his wishes.
North Side Mishawaka business men plan an opposition carnival to counter the South Side merchants offer of the Robinson Carnival company. They argue two carnivals at the same time will make Mishawaka lively and draw crowds.
The matter of giving one half of Benton Lockard's pension to his wife by the commissioner of pensions will be taken to the Supreme Court of the United States to prevent such division.
The King Medicine Company purchased a new wagon from a South Bend firm and a new horse and harness. They dispatched the outfit in charge for L. F. Patt. It is described as a handsome outfit.
Morrison's Island at Lake Wawaseee will be surveyed and laid out into lots for sale by the new owners. A race meet is planned to be held at Lagrange.
Drakes a LaGrange County man dies aged 65. Wade Sefton named marshal at LaGrange after Riley Fish resigns. Mathias Langenbacher, Adams County pioneer, dies in Decatur at 80. Theodore Smith of Decatur dies at 57. Walter Penfield appointed secretary to his father Judge Penfield and to depart for The Hague on U. S. government business. Hinco couple in Kokomo court publicly declare love with a kiss. Huntington County budget asks 260000 for a new courthouse, set for September approval. G Washington Randolph, claiming wealth, causes scene in Pierceton planning farms and race tracks, then vanishes.
The Imperial Bump skeens of Puzzazza instituted a new group with 25 charter members. Kalamazoo officers helped form the Island Group that became the Indiana grand lodge. Joel P. Hawks named Grand Um-Puz zazza and Ben C. Benger Per-Puzzazza. An initiation banquet followed.
Prof. Hering of Notre Dame is likely to be chosen to nominate Grand President Edwards for reelection. The grand lodge meets in New York the first week in September.
Syracuse plans a third game with Milford on the 13th at Milford. A Goshen party chaperoned by Guy Lichtenwalter stays a week at Whitaker’s cottage. Miss Mabel Sargent and Mr Ed Scott wed in Syracuse. Electricians work toward city lighting. a Tuesday storm toppled a Syracuse home stove, injuring Mrs. Myers and sister but not seriously. A South Side ball game between Columbia City Reds and Syracuse Grays drew a huge crowd with no scores. Smith pitched well. The Big Four announce a Winona Lake excursion with a special train and round trip fare of 21.00. Charles Rohs of the Waldorf Astoria reportedly committed suicide in Riverside Park. James Green of La Grange was knocked down and trampled by a horse, suffering multiple injuries.
