On the French front near Brasse the Franco American force crossed the Vesle River and defeated German troops. The enemy counterattacked but was repulsed by a violent barrage, with over 100 German prisoners taken.
Allied forces report regaining territory southwest of Morlancourt after a morning assault along the Bray Corbie road north of the Somme. Paris dispatches note ongoing French repulsions of German attacks along the Vesle river between Raismes and Soissons with 100 prisoners taken east of Raisne.
General March told the Senate military committee that the War Department aims to raise about 5,000,000 men under the administration manpower bill expanding draft ages to 45. He said there is no need to recall Congress before the recess ends August 24 if the bill is reported by then.
The Diamond Shoals lightship off Cape Hatteras was shelled and sunk by an enemy submarine late yesterday. The crew escaped in boats and reached shore safely. The submarine approached within about half a mile of the coast, the report said.

In Lagrange Indiana Henry S K Bartholomew will acquire the weekly Democrat Call from Henry O Eldridge who will hand over around September 1 The change ends Eldridges long career as postmaster and newspaper owner dating back to 1896 when he bought the Middlebury Independent Bartholomew formerly worked at Goshen Democrat and South Bend Times and will move from Edgewood farm near Goshen to assume control of the papers duties

In a July 20 letter from base hospital No. 3, Pvt. Dean F. Smiley U.S. Marine describes a slight shrapnel wound to his left cheek after combat near Bellows woods. He recounts waves of troops, captures of generals, and promises to return to his company within a week. His mother, Mrs. F. M. Smiley of 406 South 5th Street, had learned of the wound via telegram the day prior.
Pvt. Bert C. Snyder, U S artilleryman, writes from France to his mother in Goshen that he has killed at least two Germans. The letter dated June WW and postmarked June 20 reached Goshen yesterday. Snyder asks to be remembered to the Democrat force.

Merrill Billet and Miss Treva L. Delcamp, both of the city, were married Sunday in St. Joe. They were accompanied by the bride’s sister Miss Mildred Delcamp and Cecil A. Jones. The couple will reside on a farm southwest of Goshen.
