Mrs. F M Smiley of Goshen Indiana receives a War Department telegram stating Private Dean Franklin Smiley United States Marine Corps was wounded in action July 19 with degree undetermined. The message from Major General George Barnett confirms the combat wound and notes no further details available.

Mrs. Frank M. Smiley of Goshen reports son Dean Franklin Smiley a U S marine wounded in action in France with undetermined degree on July 19. He enlisted May 7, 1917 at Fort Wayne, trained at Parris Island and Quantico, sailed for France September 15 and arrived October 5. He previously worked as a refreshment salesman and was a Democrat carrier boy long ago.

David Yoder living near Middlebury on a ten acre truck farm faces four charges in Justice of the Peace Victor Smith court at Middlebury and later in Justice Fryberger’s city court. The offenses intoxication profanity carrying concealed weapons and disturbing the peace. Bonds set at 100 dollars each. Witnesses include Bruce Balyeat and the town marshal. The incident occurred Saturday night in Middlebury’s business district after Yoder arrived intoxicated from his farm.

A three year old boy, son of Mr and Mrs John Pyslisk of South Bend, was killed apparently by a loaded shotgun left in his upstairs room. The child, playing with the weapon, was shot through the head as it fired just before six o clock. The head was torn and the boy died instantly. The father, a meat market operator, found him after hearing the gun report.
Harry Coryn of South Bend owns the pigeon that won first prize in a 7000 mile flight from New Orleans. Three pigeons from Mishawaka and nine from South Bend were released at 6 am Wednesday and Coryn’s bird reached South Bend Monday at 1 30 pm, completing the trip in 10914 hours. This is the Coryn bird’s third straight year as winner.
Two deaths at Epworth hospital in South Bend within five hours of each other were caused by blood poisoning. Peter Pawlikowski, injured by a fall from a tree ten days earlier, suffered a compound ankle fracture and needed surgery with 18 stitches. Ray Schoonover, aged 16, had been in a motorcycle accident two weeks prior.
War Department released total American casualties in the Aisne Marne sector at 16 409 with 1213 killed or wounded since arrival in France. Army lists show 358 casualties with 31 killed and 313 severely wounded. Marines add 140 with 7 killed and 3 died of wounds. Names include Kopinski, Buckalski, Carter, Woodward, Nance, Presinger.

Nora Lusher barely escaped serious burns in Elkhart when a broken match head ignited her apron while lighting a water heater. The flames singed her hair and glasses may have saved her eyes as she tore off the blazing apron and cried for help to neighbor Mrs. John Plass, who did not hear.
Representative Henry A. Barnhart of Rochester will be the principal speaker at a Democratic meeting in South Bend on Thursday August 15. Chairman Fred Van Nuys of the state committee announced the event and the slate of state ticket dominees will attend.

Harve Wohlford resigns as assistant fire chief at the central station to accept employment with the New York Central shops in Elkhart.
Charles "King" Wurz, a South Bend gambler, is held on a $200 bond. Fifteen men found gambling at his place each posted $100 bonds. A quantity of liquor and gambling paraphernalia were destroyed.
