The war tax bill, revised to late estimates, was favorably reported today to the Senate Finance Committee. It proposes raising $2,006,970,000 by taxation, while the House bill provides $1,867,000,000 in new taxes. The Senate bill has no provision for additional bonds to be considered later by the House.
An undated report notes German attacks in Flanders were unsuccessful while Russia forms a new cabinet with agreed personnel. Censorship remains a key pretrial challenge for the government under Kerensky. Some activity is also reported on the Austro Italian front.
The Indiana public service commission authorized Hawks Electric Co. of Goshen to acquire Syracuse Light and Power Co. in a deal valued at $70,000, paying with $50,000 in bonds and $20,000 in stock. The action was announced from Indianapolis on August 6.
A crowd of bathers ignored a drowning incident at Shiner lake near Staples hotel as divers, drag hooks, and searchers sought the body of 14 year old Homer Mills son of Frank Mills of Fort Wayne. The father and two brothers witnessed the scene while scores swam and teased each other.
Henry Cripe purchased 140 acres near the Berkey church of the Sanders Egbert Co for 20000 dollars. Lawrence W Seamans bought 140 acres west of Goshen from Harvey Alery.
The A. W. Cunningham variety store stock has been sold and will be shipped out of the city. The North Main street room occupied by the store and the fixtures are for rent. Mr. Cunningham established the enterprise here about a year ago.
Nine members of the Snyder family and Homer Krick were injured in a Sunday Fort Wayne auto accident. The injured are Mr and Mrs Fred Snyder and their children Edward Joseph Caroline Margaret Adolph and Martha Snyder and Homer Krick. All are expected to recover.
Former U S Senator and Mrs J J Kern have gone to Asheville North Carolina for the benefit of Mr Kern’s health. His condition has been serious for several months.
In Berain on August six five state ministers announce resignations including Foreign Secretary Zimmerman and four state secretaries such as Finance Minister Lehtze and Imperial Minister von Loebell. Dr Richard von Kuehlmann named secretary for foreign affairs to replace Zimmerman. The Hague newspaper notes Kuehlmann opposed ruthless submarine warfare.
Reports from Amsterdam via Exchange Telegraph Co. say a munitions factory blast at Henningsdorf, Germany, killed or injured about 300. The town was isolated by troops and police as the catastrophe ranked among the worst since the war began.
Muskogee Oklahoma August 6 United States District Attorney W P McGinnis announced that men arrested for resisting the army draft in the Oklahoma uprising will be tried on charges of free a erd the death penalty will be asked.
Preliminary reports from a ship's master who thinks he saw a submarine periscope off New York yesterday were received at the navy department. Investigation is being conducted.
Stockholm reports the International Socialist Conference will be held on Sunday September 9 in the city. Organizers announce the date as definite and invite delegates and members to attend the gathering.
Dr C A Dresch of Mishawaka formerly of this city buys the double store room building on South Main street in Elkhart from Harry A Sanders of South Bend formerly of Goshen. The first and second floors housed the Smith Herr Furniture Co and the third floor the K of P lodge. Dresch trades several Elkhart building lots as part of the consideration. Harry C Dangler acted as broker.
Wilbur L. Stonex, longtime Goshen resident and early movement advocate, says prospects favor installing a central heating station this season that will belong to the city. He expresses optimism about the project moving forward.
Henry Strasser, a Pennsylvania railroad engineer, was severely injured when a car driven by Mrs. Fred Cherry struck him while he rode a motorcycle near his Fort Wayne home.
Two major storms moved through Kosciusko Noble and Allen counties yesterday afternoon causing crop and property damage but no injuries. Torrential rain and 48 mph winds felled trees flooded Lake Wawasee area hotels and cottages, damaged a Kendallville home, disrupted telephones and power, and left over 200 homes without lights.
Nearly all registrants tested by the Elkhart exemption board under the army draft law claimed exemption. Fifty men were notified to report for examination Saturday. four failed to appear. Of 46 examined, only five were granted exemptions. Examinations continued today. board provides little information.
Funeral services for Calvin Forney Jr were held yesterday at 2 30 PM from the family home south of Goshen. Rev Melvin Stutsman assisted by Rev Kitson officiated. Burial followed at Bainertown cemetery.
Charles Wertzberger, 38, a laborer, was instantly killed at a grade crossing of the Erie railroad in Decatur when the buggy he rode in was struck by a train. His wife and Mrs. Alice Harmon, 60, who were with him, were badly hurt and Mrs. Harmon may die.
Herman M. Schroeder, a Grand Rapids and Indiana railroad brakeman, died in a Fort Wayne hospital from injuries suffered when he fell beneath a train at Avilla.
The 7 Company F Winchester 2nd Regiment Indiana Infantry along with two detachments were on bridge guard duty at East Chicago and will remain in Chicago indefinitely.
The 12th annual Elkhart chautauqua closed yesterday as Senator W. T. Kenyon of Iowa spoke at the platform. Attendance was excellent.
A brief notice states Company E of the Third Regiment, 1. A. G. is in camp at Elkhart. The item records a military unit stationed location and camp status.
About ten Goshen residents belong to Company E of the Third regiment. They camp at Island Park in Elkhart awaiting muster into federal service. Plans for relocation are unclear with reports of Fort Benjamin Harrison or Camp Shelby as possibilities. The unit shows 96 enlisted men, three officers, eight recruits. tents are in short supply and borrowed from Elkhart ta llk troupe. Goshen men joined the Elkhart contingent yesterday.
Surgeon General Gorgas forms a 150 member nerve specialists corps to examine all men in training at national army cantonments and weed out recruits with any nervous affliction. The program aims to ensure a steadier fighting force by early removal of fragile candidates.
The county commissioners met in regular session with all members present. Bridge contracts were awarded to Vistula Highway for Charles E. Rock at 266 dollars, Bridge No 210 to Frank Brumbaugh at 842.95, Bridge No 212 to Edward Rimpler at 8738.90, Bridge No 207 to Edward Rimpler at 621, and Bridge No 209 to Edward Rimpler at 221.09. A Jefferson township highway improvement petition by Benj F. Gardner was dismissed. Northern Construction Co. was notified to complete Sterling road improvements. Sept Gillette was ordered to investigate the tile on the Howard ditch. Seller road in Qosolo township and the Bango Creek bridge were accepted. Elkhart avenue bridge contract award deferred to Monday August 13.
Dr Sol C Dickey resigns as general secretary of Winona Assembly and Bible Conference after 23 years of leadership. He cites plans to devote time to rais ing money to repay creditors and mentions the action was discussed with the board. No successor named yet.
Mortuary record notes 16 day old Cleo Irene Cassell, daughter of Mr and Mrs Howard Cassell, died at 6 AM at the parental Waterford home. Funeral services were held this afternoon at four o'clock from the late residence with Rev Peterson officiating.
This Goshen boy, soon to be 19, serves with Troop B, 2d Cavalry, U S A in the signal service. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Bailey of 410 Wilkinson Street. Bailey enlisted at the Fort Wayne recruiting station on May 7 after preliminaries in South Bend, trained at Fort Thomas, Ky, then Fort Russell, Cheyenne, Wyo.
Rogers' Grays defeated Ligeier All Stars 5 to 3 at Band Park in the first game of a five game series. Slalahaugh matched Swede Lodgren in a tight pitching duel until Stacey Bowman warmed up and steadied the pitcher. About 35 spectators witnessed sensational plays and a key hogan throw. Next game set for Band Park with Molly Meise slated to start for Ligeier.
Toledo police detained Charles Warner a Goshen tailor and Moose lodge trustee after a disappearance with lodge funds. Night Patrolman Knapp captured him yesterday and he appeared before Justice S P Fryberger, with the case continued to Wednesday.

Dr G K Runyon of Elkhart found the body of Mme Evangeline Barron a Chicago soprano and Harold McCormick protege in Star Lake near Baldwin Michigan. Her boat and belongings were located ashore the previous day near a dangerous ledge.
The funeral for Daniel S. Billman was held at 10 30 this morning at the Yellow Creek Mennonite church with Rev. David Yoder officiating. Interment followed in the Yellow Creek cemetery.

Dr. kh A Shoemaker of Huntington Ind arrives in Goshen to assume Ellen B Willard’s practice. He is a 1915Ross College graduate and Willard’s classmate, with his family moving into 314 South Main Street rooms formerly used by Willard as she leaves town for a ill mother.
Several Goshen young men are expecting calls for the second officers training school which will convene at Fort Benjamin Harrison within a few days.

Oscar Cool of Livingston Montana aged 52 formerly of Fort Wayne is described as wealthy yet continues to work as a locomotive engineer on the North Pacific railroad and declines a pension.
A nine pound son was born Saturday to Mr and Mrs Arthur E Osborn at their Marion home. He is named Joseph Arthur Osborn. Mrs Osborn is formerly Miss Isabelle Beane of Goshen. A son was also born yesterday to Mr and Mrs Edgar N Stahley of southwest of Goshen.
George Simmons, former Goshen youth and head of the Gary Printers' Association, also manages the Davis & Mack ball team of Gary, reputed as one of the fastest traveling semi pro outfits in the northern part of the state. He is the son of Mrs. Ralph Lane of South Seventh Street.
A hand car owned by the N. Y. CG. was demolished this morning when struck by N. Y. C. train No. 685 due in Goshen at 11 06 near the water tank at Millersburg. The occupants escaped injury.
