Allied forces press toward Rheims and Vesle with Americans in control of Fismes after storming the town. French gains north of the Aisne and near Soissons, while German resistance strengthens from Fismes to Rheims. Pershing cites 8400 American prisoners and 133 guns captured.
A one mile stretch of new concrete road west of Elkhart in Bango township is complete and open to traffic. The project cost 15000 dollars with Northern Construction Co of Elkhart and George C. Berkey as manager winning the contract. Next year the pavement will extend four miles across Bause township to connect Osceola and South Bend, forming part of the Lincoln highway.
Fort Wayne reports that Louis G. Laur, 28, of the city, was killed in action while serving with American forces in France, according to a War Department message. Also noted are a Chicago style show featuring Ethel Sherwin Burt and Lake Wawasee’s very low level.
A Canadian port report says the Nelson A of Yarmouth Nova Scotia was sunk by a German submarine off the Atlantic coast. The crew landed here and reported the vessel was destroyed last Saturday.
Paris dispatch reports a lull in action along the Soissons Reims front as German forces capitalize on favorable weather. The Vesse river bank has become swampy, hindering Allied movement and aiding the German defensive stance.
Paris August 5 official war office statement says French detachments crossing the Vesle are meeting German resistance with nothing of importance reported from the battle front.
Paris reports the long range bombardment of the city was resumed this morning as artillery renewed fire. The Associated Press notes continued shells and ongoing pressure on Paris.
George P. Rowell, stationed in Rome and head of Red Cross insurance in Italy, writes to his wife with a detailed account of Rome’s July Fourth celebration. He includes a Red Cross program as part of his letter.
Allen county sheriff and deputies set a Sunday night checkpoint on the state line from Payne Ohio into Indiana. They confiscated whiskey beer and other liquors from vehicles entering Indiana and kept watch until daybreak. Payne PA is 28 miles from Fort Wayne along a heavily traveled road with two large saloons and high drink prices.
Elkhart iron molders began a strike this morning after their union petition cited employers failure to raise salaries. Three firms with government contracts are affected: Elkhart Bridge & Iron Co. Concord Foundry and Elkhart Foundry & Machine Co.
Arthur F. P. Biggs, formerly of War saw, opens a law practice in Ligonier. For eleven years he served as chief counsel for Strauss Brothers of Ligonier, bankers and real estate dealers.
A heavy rain fell Sunday afternoon north of here, reaching Goshen and nearby Bristol area. The shower did not extend south of Iidian Creek, leaving southern regions unaffected.
Prof. M. O. Titus has resigned as superintendent of the Middlebury schools. The position had been tendered him for 1918-1919.
Chris Unzicker remains in serious condition at the Mayo Brothers Hospital in Rochester Minnesota.
Dr. Frank W. Gunsaulus of Chicago appears tomorrow afternoon on the platform after the parade of the Allies. Tonight Capt George F Campbell of the Royal Flying Corps lectures A Soldier of the Sky. Admission 50c plus war tax. children 29c. Tomorrow afternoon Dunbar’s Orchestra and a World War lecture by Gunsaulus. Evening Dunbar’s Revue with Grand Parade of the Allies. Admission 50c, 39c children, plus war tax.
The seventh annual Redpath ch autqua at Goshen finishes tomorrow night with Dunbar's revue and a grand parade of the allies. Tomorrow afternoon Dunbar's orchestra will give a concert and Dr Frank W Gunsaulus of Chicago will lecture on The World War and America. This morning marked the sixth day of the chautauqua.
Postmaster Beane states that only magazines published within two months before mailing and weeklies not older than three weeks should reach soldiers at cantonments. Instances have occurred of old magazines and papers being deposited in mail boxes by individuals.
Fred Manson, a Rochester printer, telegraphed friends from Bryan Ohio that his 19 year old son who was severely burned while attending radio school in New York has died. No further particulars are available. Mr Manson was until recently employed by The Democrat.
In the presence of parents relatives and friends fifteen young women received the habit and white veil of the Holy Cross congregation during a solemn high mass in the chapel of St Marys College. Nineteen other young women made their first vows.
Moses Cotherman of Goshen has purchased a one half interest in The Ligonier Banner from W C B Harrison. He plans to move his family to Ligonier as he takes on his new role with the publication.
The common council will meet in regular session tonight marking the first gathering in three weeks. City officials expected to discuss ongoing ordinances and community issues during the meeting.
The body of an unidentified man washed ashore near Michigan City and was buried in the potter’s field. Authorities believe he remained in the water for many months.
Mast William Mast, defendant in surety of peace proceedings brought by Ira Kaufman, is to be tried today before Justice of the Peace Freyberger. Numerous witnesses have been summoned on both sides and the case is expected to be heated throughout. James S Dodge of Elkhart represents Mast, with A. J. Simpson and Tom W. Vail for the plaintiff. Mast is well known in the area and is alleged to have threatened Kaufman on several occasions.
Rev. Alfred M. Eells of Westminster Presbyterian Church in South Bend advocates a union of denominations as a war measure and a way to more effectively spread the gospel. He says a great blessing is possible as a result of the war.
Nellie Cole, a three year old girl, was abducted from the Lutheran Reformed Orphan's home in Fort Wayne by two men and a woman who took her to a waiting automobile. The sheriff set guards at railroad stations but the suspects were not located by nightfall. Authorities suspect the kidnapping may be linked to the mother, Mrs Jane Cole, who had sought the child's removal from the asylum.
Elkhart county Republican central committee members and party workers are called to meet in Stonex hall in Goshen tomorrow night. The gathering is led by county chairman Guy W. Daus man and district chair Vernon W. Vanfleet with A. J. Rickey of Laporte, GOP nominee for congress, also expected. Campaign plans will be discussed.
Melvin B. Whitehead sues A. E. Nowells for 75 dollars over bread purchases totaling 66.20 dollars. Charles Searfoss fined 1 dollar plus costs for intoxication after arriving from Toledo. sentence to penal farm suspended. Warrants for intoxication issued for Geo Schaefer and Martin Trainor. rehearing set in municipal court. both may be eligible for the penal farm.
Practically no business of consequence occurred at the commissioners meeting held today outside of approving a large number of bills. All board members attended except Edward Iffert, commissioner from the southern district.
Frank Brumbaugh of Elkhart Bridge & Iron Works says the new bridge over the St Joseph river at Elk Hart will be completed on November 1. The contractor holds the contract for the project.
G. J. Bader of Whiting formerly of Laporte sold his stake in East Chicago banks to Walter Riley and C. A. Westburgh of East Chicago.
Washington Aug 5 Casualties in the fighting since July 15 are listed by Gen Pershing with 407 names the largest single day total. Of these 203 killed in action 37 died of wounds and 148 wounded. Indiana men include Lieut James M Duncanu Terre Haute and Pvt John W Wolfe South Bend both killed in action. Cook William A Gordon Fort Wayne and Pvt Isaac W Laurence Eckerty wounded severely. Crawford county.
The Marine Corps casualty list reports ten names: nine killed in action and one died of wounds. Wounded, degree undetermined, includes Pvt. Orville Hostettler of Bedford Pvt. Robert Kendall of Cannelton Pvt. Frank H. Marlow of New Albany and Pvt. Alvin H. Robison of Stillwell. Additionally a South Bend gasoline shortage affects garages and a milk delivery route.
The Luther league of Trinity Lutheran church will meet at George Krutz's South Tenth street home Wednesday night instead of Tuesday evening as planned.
Hog cholera is raging in several Indiana areas with the situation described as very serious in some locations. Local authorities and farmers monitor outbreaks as the disease spreads across farms.
Miss Eva Cripe and Clarence Bowman, both residents of this city, were united in marriage in a ceremony held locally. The event marks a new home and prospects for the couple.
William Saevetz, 24, of South Bend, drowned while bathing in Chain Lakes Sunday after 6 pm. Police officers James Cutting Bert Olmstead and George Pinter recovered the body about two hours later. Saevetz, a recent resident and unmarried Russian, appeared to be seized by cramps. The body was held at Swantz morgue pending burial plans.
Indiana calls 1500 student nurses for the U S Nurse Reserve of 25000. Mrs A S Mitchell leads Elkhart County recruitment with a quota of 20 or more. Goshen Greys beat White Pigeon Stars 4 to 2 near Wlinger Jake as John Gruber sparked the offense with a three bagger in the fourth and a two bagger in the sixth. Lefty Willis and sturdy defense earned praise. next Sunday the Greys face Valparaiso, Toledo Rail Lights, Benton Harbor Speed Boys, and Marion.
The Women’s Foreign Missionary Society of the First MLE church will entertain Home, Theburn, St. Mark’s, and Basher Chapel missionary groups at Mrs. Isaace Simmons’ home, 115 N Fitra St, on Wednesday Aug 7 at 2:00 p.m. The program features hymns, devotionals, readings, music, and talks including Miss Alice McGuire on Burmah experiences and Prof. Kellar address. A bill to change the selective service ages from 21 to 18 through 45 was introduced in both houses and sent to military committees. It plans to take effect after summer recess, with Sept. 5 proposed for registration of new eligible men. Weekly registrations could reach 80,000, aiding a September call of 200,000.
